Top 2-3 grooming tools for a NON-show pooch

Jackson is 13 months and is finally starting to let me brush her for longer than 5 minutes at a time. I can still only keep her still for 10-15 minute stretches, but it is a definite improvement. My question is this; what would everyone recommend I purchase to make our grooming sessions easier and more efficient? I will never show Jackson and would like to keep her coat longer but have had to shave her several times because I cannot keep the mats out. So, I am looking for SPECIFIC brush and other grooming tool suggestions that will help me keep her mat free and looking pretty without breaking my pocket book. (To give you an idea of a price range, I cannot spend more than $100.00 for all my grooming tools total). Thank you for any ideas, I have checked previous threads but some folks use so many grooming items I get confused just reading the posts and cannot imagine that I really need 8-10 different tools to spiff up my dog (at least I hope not)!!!

A good pin brush (try pet edge) a soft slicker, a resco 80 comb and a dematting tool I have the grey one from pet edge I have a lot more and others can chime in. I don't have show dogs Oh and a decent pair of sissors
You don't need a million tools but it does help to have lots for fine tuning. If I could only have three things, I'd pick the 27 mm oval Chris Christensen straight pin brush, Chris Christensen extra small slicker (I like small because it's easier to use everywhere instead of a giant one that's uncomfortable to use on small parts) and a matt breaker like this one because in a pinch you can use it for dematting and for stripping. Outside of the tools, I really like having a good spray coat conditioner like The Stuff to use while I line groom. All of those things are well under $100.
I use the Christensen brushes but they can be pricey. I picked up a couple of Plush Puppy 27mm, they run about $18 each. If you order from PetEdge give GloCoat a try, I use that and The Stuff.
The Stuff is good, and I like Chris Christiansen's Ice on Ice equally. I have a bottle of each and they are pretty interchangeable.

That CC brush that I recommended is only $26 so it's not too much different. Holly, that one Plush Puppy we were using had an unusually long handle. Did you get a more normal size one?

If you really want to spend some money, take a mortgage out and buy a Mason Pearson brush. Wow.
I got the regular CC brush and the smaller one, it was over $100 :( . The Plush Puppy b rushes are the only ones I've ever seen, I'm (more accurately
Zach/Gabe/Jonah  ) are pretty hard on brushes so I like the $18 price. My small CC slicker has lots of teeth marks on the handle, I think Jonah and Gabriel were taking turns slickering each others legs

Where did you buy the CC brushes? It sounds like you got hosed. Even right off the website, they'd only be $56 + S&H.

Wanna buy a bridge?
They're the ones with brass tips or something. And if you're selling bridges I'll take the Ambassador and reopen 75 . Oh, ring time is 11am Saturday :( so you may want to take Friday off and sleep all day, I know how you hate getting up early and we need to get there before 10.....sweet dreams

Oh, you got the fancy ones.
Here are my top grooming tools

1) Resco #80 comb $15 on Cherrybrook

2) All Systems Pin brush about $16 on Cherrybrook or the CC Pin brush it is about $26 - I have used both and like both - I also have the CC T shaped Pin brush and I like it but I tend to swith between it and my other pin brush. If I had to choose between the T shape or oval I would take the oval.

3) All System Slicker brush - small is about $9 and the medium is about $10 - I like the small size for hard to reach places like under the arms.

4) Grooming Spray - I like my Isle of the Dogs grooming spray but I have used the Stuff as well. Isle of the Dogs is not on the Cherrbrook.

I looked up prices at the Cherrybrook website becuase for some reason PetEdge did not have the Resco combs for a while - I am not sure they do now. But sometimes if you order from 1 website it can keep the processing charged down.

I was blessed with by first OES a little over 2 years ago and this was my beginning shopping list. After the initial investment I have been trying to add 1 grooming tool every so often. Shears are my next big purchase but my dogs have survived with regular sissors.
Gee some great ideas!! I'de like a hint on a grooming table too
I have a 3' Precision Made for travel, a couple 4' but am too lazy to see what kind, and a 4' Edemco electric I bought about nine years ago. My favorite is the Edemco since I don't have to lift on/off and it saves my back :)
I plan on doing a search on this forum, but I also would like to be reminded how wide/long of a grooming table I needed. Also what things I need to look for when purchasing one. I think it's going on my christmas list this year. 8)

I have one - I ver seldom use it as I prefer to sit on the floor and groom - yes lazy. I would say to get one larger than you think you need - mine id fine for Marley, Morgan hangs off and I don't think its strong enough for Beowulf.
Thank you everyone for the great advice. I will be doing my (online) shopping this week and cannot wait to get some new grooming tools!!! If only Jackson would be as excited as I am.........................
A couple people mentioned the Resco #80 comb. This comb comes in multiple styles (course, fine, medium, medium-course, etc.). What style is best for the sheepie?
I have that comb too - I LOVE it!
I have the wide tooth (coarse), but if I wanted to replace my other narrower comb, I would get this one in the narrow too. It is so nice to use, and has held up for grooming a full coat dog for over a year - and still looks brand new.
Good Pin Brush, good comb, and sharp scissors.

If we are allowed to pick 4 included should be decent nail clippers too.
OK, I am a bad sheepie mama! I dont line groom, but I do brush Allie at least once a day, trim matts off her as they come along. So I am wondering, is the Resco comb used for line grooming only? Or are you guys using it for something else also? And is the small slicker good for keeping the swirly/curly hairs straight behind the pitts? I currently just use the CC pin brush, scissors and the AWESOME rake Jill told me about a year ago.....
I have a 30 years old metal comb that is just starting to lose a couple of pins, so I will be replacing it soon. It has a wide area for gripping. And both narrow and medium tines on the 8 in length.

*a metal rake, wide-tooth only. This is what I use for touch ups or quick comb out. I do go to the skin with it and it does remove some of the undercoat, but it has been known to leave a few mats.

*stainless steel bandaige scissors for cutting into the mats as needed. And the occassional trim.

* a straight hemostat for removing hair from the ears. Get the scissors and hemostat from a uniform shop for the best prices.

*an old quilt to lay on the floor for the dogs to lay on while I comb them out. My back gets a bit sore, but the grooming table are too short for me - and I end up with a backacke and sore feet. I'm the strange one on this.

*a cheapo battery operated 1 1/4" wide trimmer for getting the hair between the pads. Someday I'll get a better one, but the Crazy Dog one has lasted 5 years.

Both of my Sheepies are in long coat, minus the undercoat. Yesterday, I combed both of them out during the football game - including ears and hair between the pads. I even managed to do the Golden Retriever during halftime. Since we won, I now have to do this during each of the remaining games. 8O
Use a pin brush and line brush, if done properly you won't lose much undercoat.

LOL, now that is really good information!

Note to self: just hang out, drink and eat during the game. Just do it for the team! :cheer:
