Help me not go insane while I wait...

I dont know if anyone else here has had to be patient and wait until they can get an OES but I am going crazy! Our last OES Tabatha left us 2 years ago and we had to move house to be near my mum who was in a nursing home too far away to visit. Then she died in May this year so we moved back to our cottage, but we havent ever lived here before without an OES and I am going crazy. Its all I think about.I spend half the day online searching for anyone in my state or the adjoining state who needs to rehome their sheepdog,I actually found 2 such dogs but both were already spoken for,I have my name on a puppy list of puppies not even yet conceived,I am buying brushes and bowls etc in my shopping,I am selling my doll collection on ebay in case I find a dog and need cash fast to pay to have it flown up here,I am looking at all the members here's dog photos,I am rereading every OES book I own,I look through my last 35 years of OES photograph albums and think about my 5 OESgirls and one boy who were part of our families,I am even sewing a patchwork quilt with all the bits of fabric featuring OES that I have collected over the years. But this waiting could go on for another year yet.I am joining the OES Club in my state so at least I get the occassional newsletter...amything,I just need a link, need to feel I am part of the people who own OES....send me some PATIENCE please! If you have any to spare!!!!

I feel your frustration. Mine was a very long, if self imposed wait. I spent years trying to get my life to a point where I could have an OES again, knowing how demanding having a dog this active can be. So when the opportunity final came, I went a bit over-board and got two.

Stick with it. I understand there aren't all that many OES in the land down under. My sisters are in NSW, and the younger has begun expressing an interest in getting an OES as well. I'm already warning her about how long her search to find one will be, or how she may have an equally, if not longer wait on a puppy list.

Have you considered importing one? I know AU has some pretty strict quarantine laws, or they did about 15 years ago when I lived there. Is it still as tough to bring a pet in? And if so, is it as hard with NZ; maybe you could extend your search to include there?
Australia still has strict quaranteen laws, they have to go into special Quaranteen Kennels for a month and pre-testing in the country of origin before they arrive for quranteen. It takes a toll on them for that month spent in Quaranteen and is extemely expensive, then if they show any signs of sickness they are not admitted into Australia.

NZ no quaranteen with bringing in a dog from there into Australia, but as far as OES go there is not many available there or breeders breeding them. :(

I know how frustrated you feel, hang in there. :ghug:
please lok at you PM
i JUST SAW WHERE YOU LIVE , MIGHT BE A PROUBLEM FOR TRASPORTING
Yes,thanks for trying to help but I am in Australia,I should have put that in my post!Sorry!
BTW I just uploaded my little photo, thats me with Amber(Big Dog) and Christobelle(Little Pup),a few years ago now! Both crossed the Rainbow Bridge now.The photos about 20 years old actually...but lets just say I still look the same(if you squint your eyes)
Hi Tabatha,

Welcome from Marianne from Canada!

Oh sheesh I wish I were a doctor than I'd have more patients/patience..sigh my lame attempt at humor! :?

I understand completely how you feel as my very first post at OES many years ago was in regards to wanting to adopt a sheepie needing a home. My aged Sheepie girl was fast approaching the end of her life and I couldn't imagine my home without an OES. I waited and waited...nothing. I then contacted a breeder but would have much rather have a rescue but OES are still not frequently seen in my area. I had to wait until puppies were born and then wait to pick my boy up at the age of 8 wks - it meant driving to the US to pick him up.

Then Panda come up unexpectedly - a rescue from Hong Kong just months after I got Merlin the puppy. (It was through this site that many of the regulars were involved in Panda's rescue from a puppy mill in HK)

I also had Blue, my aged BlueHeeler/Lab so suddenly I was up to three dogs. I guess that saying becareful what you wish for turned out to be true in my case (chuckles at this point). I hope the same happens with you.

That was 5 years ago and now I'm back down to 2 but considering adding a third. (Just one that needs a home but doesn't have to be an OES)

Still, I understand how you feel as once you live with a sheepie your home feels empty without one. I am crossing my fingers your wish will come true soon as you sound as if you can provide a wonderful home for one.

Best wishes to you!
Marianne
these things take time.......if you pass on a pup because it's not the sex you want; you will be waiting twice as long! ........
Yes,I know that.
I am after an adult really ,of either sex,for now,the 2 adults I asked about adopting that were taken were males,(One was the boy you sent me the details of,thanks for that,I was second inquiry and he was taken already)then later when I finally get to the top of the puppy list,I want a female pup.Thats likely to be 2 years. It may seem weird but having raised 6 sons and one daughter,I really want a female pup.I have lived so long in a male dominated household ,but that said,I would gladly take an adult male OES.
I dont know if its any different raising a male pup?I have never had one,the only male OES I have had was an adult when I got him,and he was really big and strong so I was glad he had been trained before I got him.
I guess raising a male pup can have it's issues. Everyone will say it depends on the dog- but how do you know until you have him or her?

I think it's down to training, male or female pup. We train our 14 month old boy to take it slow and walk behind us going up and down stairs, through doorways, entering and leaving the house etc so he is easier to handle. We did this from the beginning, now he's getting big and could easily pull me over if he got over excited but I suspect that would be the same with a female.
We have not had our boy castrated, his behaviour has been good so far, we are hoping we won't have to.

We got a boy because they are more cuddly, and follow you everywhere. Although this can be embarrassing as people look at you funny when your dog follows you into the loo

I really hope you find a sheepie, I waited 15 years for mine until circumstances were right. I spent 2 years looking at this site, learning all I could and saving everyone's pictures. Very sad indeed

It's the same with a female. Just this morning, despite training Tonks and Luna to sit while I lock the door, Tonks took off and half dragged me with her! Ouch!

My girls do the same. Tonks is very cuddly; always trying to get herself into my lap, and Luna will seek anyone out for kisses if they are home. And yes, both want to be in the bathroom with me....
