Morgan Update

We were at the vet this morning - again. while the one lump on Morgan's back had gone down over the weekend (due to antibiotics) the other, larger one had not. aspirating it confirmed it was an abcess and Morgan is at the vet's now having it drained.

edited to add: actually just talked to the vet and they found another area of swellling (okay he is fluffy :) ) and ended up inserting two drains.

I asked vet for something I could add to morgan's diet to improve his immune system and we are bother researching the issue - anyone here have any suggestions?

I am sorry to hear that Morgan is still struggling with this. Poor pup. :( As you might know, Oscar has immune issues as well, mostly digestive. However, he also has skin allergy issues and is susceptible to skin infections if his system gets out of control. We sought the help of a holistic vet, who put Oscar on probiotics (Perma-Clear) to boost his immune system, and colostrum to help him digest proteins. Both have helped.

Right now, though, Oscar is having alot of trouble healing from a growth removal 4 weeks ago, which has been very frustrating. The initial surgery went well, and his incision looked like it healed beautifully, until the stitches were removed and it opened up completely later that evening. Off to the emergency vet, who put in 5 staples. The staples were awful, and bothered him terribly. The incision did close up, and the staples were removed, but now a part of it looks like an infection is trying to settle in. My vet has me using a topical antibiotic ointment to see if we can get it taken care of without adding another oral antibiotic to Oscar's overloaded digestive system. (sigh). We are wondering if Oscar's difficulty in healing has to do with his recent prednisone use for IBD. At any rate, it's all a balancing act, trying to keep everything under control.

Can you get a referral to a holistic vet in your area? Preferably someone with a DVM who went on to study alternative medicine? They might be able to help. Also, did your vet give Morgan all of his vaccines at one visit? In the future, after checking titres, your vet might want to stagger the required vaccines over multiple visits. (You're probably already doing this, but I thought it couldn't hurt to mention it.)

Give Morgan a :ghug:

thanks we are using a probiotic and someone else thoughfully suggested the Colostrum. the vet put two drains in these absesses (although one looked like it had drained on its own it hadn't) and he is now leaking all over the breakfast room  I am very happy with this treatment compared to the last vet who aspirated the abcess and then was like - whatever. we ended up having it removed 6 months later.

we skipped this years vaccinations and will do titres in January when he would be due.

ahh - and just so people know this is not a rescue dog, or a byb dog. all the more reason for people to participate in all the health registry stuff Kristine is always going on about   and yes once I am sure he can go a week without an vet visit, we will send in blood as well. okay maybe four days without a visit.
Are the abscesses Lyme related or something different? Either way, it sucks but I was just wondering.
Most likely not related to the lyme and an indication that he has a compromised immune system
I have no experience with this Kerry or any advise to offer. But, I do follow these threads to learn and try to educate myself. I wanted to let you know that I am thinking of you & Morgan and hoping you find something to help him.
thanks Tammy - he is doing well - very happy to be feeling better. let's hope it continues
