places to visit in Fairfax VA area

I am going down to visit my daiughter tomorrow night at her new place in Fairfax. she only moved in a week ago and started working in DC this week. she really doesn't know the area at all. anyone have any suggestions for 1) shopping; 2) eating; 3) sites? I am taking the gps (I see one in her future  ) ut would like some recommendations as well.

She hasn't been able to get her cable hooked up so once I leave tomorrow my Internet access will be spotty at best.

I have one child in Arlington and the other child in Centreville. I think Centreville is closer to Fairfax. I'm not real familiar with stuff down there myself, but since we were just there last week-end, thought I'd let you know where we went.

We went to the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum that's out next to Dulles Airport in Herndon. My husband is a HUGE plane freak and he thoroughly enjoyed this. But even the kids and I enjoyed it, SO much more than the museum that's on the mall in DC.

We ate at a restaurant called Alto Plaza on Lee Highway in Centreville. VERY good.

Then on Sunday we went into DC proper to the US Botanic Garden, right next to the Capitol at 100 Maryland Avenue SW. This was MY special treat. SO many gorgeous specimens and displays.

Sorry, we didn't do any shopping but from what I've seen, most everything down there is the same as you can find anywhere else. Unless someone knows of a special store that's sorta specific to just that area.

And you're right - you can DEFINITELY see a GPS in your daughter's future. We got our daughter one for graduation, and it's the absolute BEST thing we've ever gotten her. She's got the worst sense of direction but now she actually enjoys driving places she's not familiar with.
Here's my two cents:

Dining:

Sweetwater Tavern in Centreville (no more than 10 minutes from your daughter)
BoneFish (it's a chain, but it's in walking distance)
Eggspectations (great breakfast served all day, amazing salads, fresh food, good service - about 7 minutes away, corner of Westfields/Walney Road and Rt. 28)

Shopping:

Fair Oaks Mall (right down Rt. 50 about 5 minutes from where you'll be)
Leesburg Corner Outlets (Rt. 7, about 15 minutes away)
Reston Towne Center (also about 15 minutes away)

Sites:

Air & Space Museum (Chantilly, VA - about 10 minutes away)
Spy Museum (in DC, easy to find)
Any Smithsonian (all off of the Mall in DC)
Drive out on Rt. 66 to the many apple orchards or vineyards (can offer specifics if you'd like)...

Have a great time. The weather should be crisp and fallish with a chance of rain on Saturday!
thanks all I will have to tell her about the chantilly air and space musem - she actually is in aviation and I think she will enjoy it more with some of her like minded school friends when they visit than with me. we probably will hit one of the mall museums saturday. great dining suggestions!!
