Those with gas ranges-Do you smell gas all the time?

so my oven is hooked up. It's AMAZING! Electrolux is now my favorite brand ever. Every dang feature was thought of, from the brightness of lights, to wave touch controls, double-slide racks, to even the tune for when things are done. LOVE IT!

Anyway, but I've never cooked on a gas range combined with Mr J being the one who hooked it up. Is it supposed to smell like gas when it's on? When it's off, it smells like nothing, but it's constantly on my mind when I use the stovetop. The twice that I have...

It may be a dumb question, but I'm just checking!!!!

there should be a pilot light that stays lit.....Or you have to turn the gas on then light (ignite it, like a grill)...but no, you should not smell gas because the flame should burn off that smell
I have gas and no there should not be a gas smell. Call someone to look at it fast. 8O
Do you mean the distinctive and strong odor of unburned gas or is it the slight smell of burning something in the house?

I would strongly suspect that you shouldn't smell that strong natural gas odor after the over has been on for a bit. You might smell it just a bit at first when lighting as I assume it has an electronic ignition and not a pilot light.

It could be that the electronic ignition (assuming there is one!) is taking too long to light the oven each time it needs to bring the temp back up.

Wait... are we talking burners or oven,,,, or both?
I'm not familiar with the dual fuel thingy.
I see you're concerned when using the cooktop. What is the color of the flame? Is it the same on each?
I wonder if there is a master valve that opens/closes when any gas is being used, and one of the other burners is leaking. Do you get the smell when using each burner, when using them separately?
My new gas cooktop had a slight odor to it the first few times we used it. Not gas, but almost, if that makes sense.
The burners come apart, two removable pieces on each burner. I took them apart and put them back together - no more smell.

Dealing with gas is the one thing we don't do ourselves. Ever.
Call a plumber.
Jo...when my oven was hooked up they didn't connect it right and I smelled gas. I called the Gas company and they fixed it. They have a spray to test it and a meter. I would call them and tell them you think it's leaking right away. You don't want that leaking out while you are asleep. If you suspect a leak they usually come right away.
i think it's from what some of you described (first starting, taking awhile for the flame to actually come on for the first time, and being new). I will definitely keep a nose out, and if I continue to smell it, I will say something.

I wanted a professional to come hook it up too but when we had a flood in the house, the plumber is the one who said it's completely a waste of money to call one of them if you already know how to do it. He reconfirmed what mr. j already knew (instructions on how to seal the wires or whatever), and that was the only thing he had to do. It's only one easy step. Even gave him the sealant stuff to use (instead of the tape stuff many homeowners use).
Just to confirm what others have said, yes, I smell gas when it first starts especially if its' being slow about starting.......read: I need to clean something. It's 33 years old, not one of these magic starts like the bbq. Also if there's a breeze in the kitchen......window open and strong breeze coming in, the flame can blow out. Brother's kitchen has this far more often with the range in the island.

If you were smelling gas as you cooked, it might indicate a leak further back in the pipes and I would investigate! But just initial smell, yeah, it's sometimes there.
yes, if its just on the start up, thats normal.....my range is 1942 and i have to turn the gas on (there is a pilot light) and then light the burners or oven with one of those long lighters....it can get scary, if you turn the gas on then turn around to do something else, then go back to light it....ive had a few singed moments.....lets just say that i dont wear the wigs while i cook any longer
LOL, Darcy

We used to have a gas countertop one in the house we had when we were 1st married. Todd loves to cook breakfast.........lets just say he learned it is safer to get dressed 1st.

Yes, never cook bacon while nekkid.
8O

cooking bacon naked??!! LOL That cracked me up!

Growing up we always had a gas stove. My mom swears by gas stoves... anyway I remember always smeeling the gas smell when first lighting the burners. If you smelled it all day long I would call them QUICK!

but it sounds like it may be the usual lighting situation. Please just be careful!
I think it sounds normal...but if you feel uncertain, call the city. At least in my city if you call and say you think you smell gas they'll be there within half an hour...

Would the gas company even come out? I would think they would since you suspect a leak. We thought we had a leak when we hooked up the gas dryer and they sent out this freaky dude who definitely seemed like he'd been sniffing gas for years.

Why does that sound so ...... familiar? Hopefully there was a halter top but I don't remember.

Darcy, yeah, I've had a few "wooshes" too when the dang thing won't lite and I have to fish for the propane lighter and forget to turn off the gas. One way to keep the eyebrows trimmed and bangs short.
I guess you guys do a lot of jumping back in bed after breakfast at your homes if you're cooking nekkid. Hmm... I have this phobia of getting bit by crawling things, so this kiddo always has clothes on. I'm as boring and plain as they come. Speaking of which, there was another large snake in our yard that Mr. J tried hiding from me.
Snake again? I'd have a real phobia about ever leaving the house!!! As it is I check the garage each time I step out and that snake incident was 27 years ago!!!

LOL thats too funny I bet he has been. Did you say you have natural gas Jo? I have propane and we get that smell when we are running out. UGH just happened over the weekend.
I never smelled gas when using my cooktop and as for the plumber, make sure he has a gas fitters license along with his plumbers license
