Bean recipe needed

I lost my favorite cowboy bean (aka calico bean) recipe

It used several varieties of dried beans and legumes, as well as hamburger. Had a sweet spicy sauce and was delicious. I want to make it for a potluck next weekend.....help!

Did your's have bacon too?

1 pound lean ground beef
6 slices bacon, diced
1/4 cup chopped onion
2 cans (approx 16 ounces each) baked beans, drain but reserve liquid*
1 can (15 ounces) red kidney beans, drained
1 can (15 ounces) lima beans, drained
1/4 cup molasses
1/2 to 3/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup ketchup
2 tsp mustard
Yes, I believe it did. Gives more zip!
What do you do with the reserved bean juice from the baked beans?

I had a couple recipes - one like this with canned beans, one totally from scratch with the dried beans. Both had the molasses and stuff like that - just what I need.

For a take dish (going from MN to ND with it), this way will be so much easier to prepare. :D Thanks
I'm with you, I'd rather do beans from scratch as they taste better, have a better texture and less sodium overall, but when time is at a premium....the cans are sure handy. You could also bake this in the oven, but let the crock do it unless you want that carmelized edges on a baking dish.

8 ounces bacon, about 10 to 12 slices
1 pound lean ground beef
1 cup chopped onion
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 tbsp. dry mustard
2 cans pork and beans
1 can lima beans or butter beans, drained
1 can kidney beans, drained
1/2 cup ketchup
1 tsp. salt
1 tbsp. vinegar
Preparation:
Brown bacon, ground beef, and chopped onions. Combine drained ground beef mixture in slow cooker with remaining ingredients; cover and cook on LOW for 3 to 5 hours.

This is like the recipe I use-- with one exception. Mine calls for 2 TBSP of chili powder. Yummy.
Ok - that sounds good too!

I am using my crockpot. We are staying in a small town while going to a dryland carting fun weekend with a bunch of Samoyed people. It is me and Chewie, with my friends Linda and Donaven and their 2 samoyeds.
We feel honored to be invited. Our host is the one who lived in No MN last year on the famous Gunflint Trail and did dogsled tours all winter with her dogs. We are going to her and her husband's home to their annual fun weekend. We are going to demo weight pull too. Guests are coming from the US and Canada! 8O

The motels were all full, as it is pheasant hunting season in North Dakota and it it is a huge tourism time! One of the motels told me about a lady who rents out 2nd floor apts in town for people. Because they are used to catering to the hunters, having big dogs was no issue!!!
So, we have a furnished apt to stay in, and it only costs us $25/person/night - and the 3 dogs stay free!

The fun part is we have a kitchen, so we can make our potluck food while there. :D
Cool, and better than a motel! You'll have a good time and Chewie will be a hit, of course.
And we need pictures of course! Of Chewie, not the beans :D

LOL -
OK, I will try real hard. I hope we get some video too.

I will take pictures of the apt. too. My guess is 1970's look, with brown, orange, green and panelling....... 8)
And harvest gold or avocado appliances :)
Naw, I was a coppertone person, didn't care for the gold or green.
Do you drain the pork and beans before adding?

In addition to Chewie pictures, I would like to see pictures of the potluck supper!

When/where/how much molasses is added to the recipe? Or is that a different recipe all together? These sound good and I've never made them. I'd like to give them a try. It's cooling off here, so I'm in the mood to cook. :D

Your weekend adventure sounds like a lot of FUN!! :P
Here are the apartment pictures.....
We were all wrong!!

1st you entered the living room - where my bed was (in the right foreground)

Chewie was looking for leftovers in the couch......

and the dining area -

And the bedroom with 4 beds!!! (They cater to hunting parties in the fall)

The bathroom was nice too.
Not bad for $25/person/night!!

sorry, I missed the food pictures, it was heavenly!!!
Not bad at all!! Although, I'm a little disappointed we didn't get to jet back to the 70s with some advocado green applicances.

I know - we were kind of bummed too.
The nicest family owns the building. They have done a LOT of remodeling - they had to put in all new wiring and plumbing too. It had more outlets than my old house does!
They live there too, so that was nice. They have a big apartment on most of the 2nd floor. Their business is on the ground floor.

I forgot the bedroom picture - we had the dogs model the beds.
