What about Bob

Well, I am happy to announce that Bob is doing well, his tail seems to have healed. He has taken control of the yard and house and seems very happy. We take him for long walks, the grandkids love him and he also has taken well to them.
Sorry for hitting such a nerve and I hope it has not created too many ill feelings.
Now I need to post a message I guess on another topic and that is doghouse. What size would you recommend? We were looking at the igloo houses last night but could not decide what size to get.
Hopefully you can pass along your expertise on this and again I thank you for all your messages and caring.

I'm so glad Bob is doing well! I've never had a dog house for our Sheepies past or present; so I won't be any help here....
Good news about Bob's tail. Bobtail. ahhhhhhahaha. ok I'm done.

Dog house....very large. ;) However, keep in mind in El Paso, he's not going to be able to be an outside dog (at least during the day) from about oh....April through November! Unless you're hooking up an A/C to that dog house.

Your climate is even hotter than mine (Oklahoma City) - I spent a lot of time in El Paso and Las Cruces this summer. No way they could be outside during the day other than for potty breaks - they can't here, either!
yey for bobs tail.....i didnt start this..... 8)

panda has a medium size doghouse...enough for her to turn around in..she doesnt use it at all during the summer but loves it in the winter...i outfit it with a down mattress and microfiber blankies...i opted not to put the flap on because A. if its that cold, she is inside B. she likes to sleep half in/out of her house....

she spent the first night outside last night since last winter...i have to say that it was lonely but this morning the brat was soo happy, she didnt want to come in for breakfast....and i refused to serve her al fresco....sheesh..nothing like having to bribe your dog to come in....
Yes, it does get very hot here in the summer. Fortunately it cools off a bit at night and not very much humidity. He will be indoors during the summer most of or all of the daylight. Winters are mild, especially during the day time hours. The house is to provide shelter during the day in case of bad weather and neither of us is home. At night, we are training him to sleep in his bed, has done well but it has been very warm at night and he has preferred to sleep outside.
At the moment he weighs 23 pounds and I have read that they grow to weigh a minimum of 70 pounds. Is that pretty accurate? Still trying to decide on the size of the house, right now from what I have read it is medium or extra large. I know it should not be so big that they have a lot of space, should be just enough to be able to turn around. Looking forward to more comments and thank you so much for your responses. Our first large dog, we are new to this. He is already enjoying his walks as we have worked hard to train him to walk with a leash. Tried the doggie park today, not too successful, will try again tomorrow.
Thanks again and hope to hear from you.
What a great site!!! :D
well I think a good indicator of Bob's size can be his parents (though this isnt' always true). Do you know how big his Dam and Sire were? 70 pounds for a male is on the small side; they say the breed varies from 75 - 100 pounds, but I've seen people on this board write about 45 pound sheepdogs (!!!) and 130 pound ones. My girls had a 65 pound Dam and a 75 pound Sire (both considered to be small) and at 1 year old my girls are already weighing in around 65 pounds. I'm hoping we can hit 75 pounds by the time they are 2 years old, but I don't expect to have giant dogs.

They have a wide range of weight - I don't happen to know any as small as 70, but they're out there! My three are 94 (female) 95 (male) and 100 (male).

Well....my female is actually part sow. She's doing better though!

They don't seem giant to me...just normal, but I guess I'm used to them. I've been around a couple who are truly giants...110...118! Which member here is it that has one who is close to 130? I can't remember, but darn...that's a big ol' boy!
Great News about Bob so glad all is healing. He is such a cutie :D
Simon is my 2yo and weighs in at 67lbs and Gar is 3yo and a lanky 68lbs. Simon is at a perfect weight but Gar needs to put on a little but since he is constant motion...putting weight on is a losing battle.
When we can get him to stand still long enough to be weighed, our Gus comes in between 90 - 95 lbs. At his monthly trip to the groomer's last week, he came in at exactly 90 lbs.

Gus's dogloo is the "giant" (extra large?) sized one. If the criterion is "just large enough to turn around in," it's probably a size too large, but Gus likes to really sprawl out when he sleeps (or if it's really cold, he tucks himself into a great big ball at the back of the dogloo). We bought the flap, but it scares Gus, so for the most part it's just tucked up out of the way.

BTW -- Gus is an inside dog, so he only uses his dogloo when he doesn't want to come in and it's cold outside. Usually, we have to wake him up (not an easy thing to do with this sheepie) and coax him inside when it's "lights out" time!
