Quick question from a newbie...

Charlie is going to the "Big Boy Groomer" for the first time this afternoon. Mostly it's just to have him trimmed to get rid of his puppy hair that's hanging on and looking dead and brown. We need to have him trimmed up as well. He's looking a little ratty right now...

I've heard about "puppy cut" and "full coat." We don't know the difference and would like to know what we're looking for in the future. Can you help?? :?

I expect several people with ALOT more experience than me will chime in with the right answer to this. But I think a puppy cut means leaving and inch or so of fur everywhere, and a full coat is a long haired, show-ready sheepdog.

When I had Tonks and Luna trimmed for the first time, they were 8 months old and the summer heat was bothering them. I went through the board here and collected photos of dogs hair cuts that I liked, and then brought those to my chosen groomer, who did a GREAT job. I also made a point of picking a groomer that had worked on sheepdogs before.
This is Heart before her first big girl cut...I had the groomer do just what you are doing....even out all of that uneven puppy hair...... April 08

yes - you are right - the 1st picture is Heart "before" - with her full coat.

There are many good examples of pictures here, and groomers really do appreciate a picture of the type of cut you want the dog to look like.

Make sure you post before and afters! :D
this thread served as a reminder to me; I just got off the phone with our groomer. The girls are now scheduled to go in next week for their second ever "big girl grooming". They'll be 1 year old and i want them to look their best!

If you brush him regulary every day you will take the dead coat out and at the sametime massage his skin which will help the new coat to come through. During the growing phase they do look scraggy sometimes but they grow out of that very quickly.
I want to learn how to trim the butt in the Crysanthemum (sp) type cut. To trim around in a circle to keep hair leaning forward, and keep it relatively clean. Every time my groomer trims Nigel's rear he looks like a baboon. I need the right scissors and lessons.

Believe it or not you would not have this problem if the sheepie was undocked, we always were led to believe that docked dogs were cleaner but after having them with the tail we know this is not true.
I believe you...but I still love the tailless butt. I love the breed, so I would have them tailess or not, but I do prefer the look in the US. They do have beautiful tails if you HAD TO have them.
OMG!!! Heart is so BEAUTIFUL!! I can only wish my Holly to be that gorgeous  I have been trying to keep her brushed and I've been doing rather well but after she shakes and you pat her and snuggle her for 5 minutes her fur starts to ........ what's the word I'm looking for..... clump back together in sections?? :? I purchased that Ice I hear you all talk about and it helps she is soft but not fluffy for long :?

(we like her alot  !!! and she is such a funny girl!!!!)
Heart is a really pretty sheepie, and lovely name too.

I'm a new sheepie owner and i've been coming in here back and forth for some time, but not actually posting much.. if any.

I have Dave who is just over a year old and i've heard you mentioning about their hair 'clumping' together.. OhHHHH i hated it, I was brushing him every day and spending hours on him! But... these clumps would appear overnight and I was putting it down to the other dog and him playing rough.. as usual! The other dog is a Staffordshire Bull Terrier and they play all day long..

I'm glad these clumps are part of every puppy changing his coat. I did have Dave shaved a few months ago because I was blaming myself for not doing a good enough job when I saw the clumps. :( I felt awful and .... and unfit mother! But, I've been educated since and my groomer is lovely. I want Dave to have a full coat and with tips of my groomer and her help to get him to how I want, i feel he's gonna be stunning.

So, basically... after all this babbling i'd like to say thanks for even the snip bits of useful sentences that really do make a difference to us... New Beginners so to speak.

Thanks again

Tracey
Could someone please post the ages and what type of coat they will have at that age.

I.E.-Puppy coat start at birth until how many months old in general that is? And the textures of the coats.

I think I read on here they have 2 coat changes, resulting in 3 coats. I have a 19 month year old and his hair is kinda of crimpy/afro-ish.

Am I doing something wrong? Is this normal? Is this his adult coat? His color went from dark gray to very light gray now. Any pics or links would be great.

heheheh; I've been following your posts. I totally hear where you are coming from.

I don't think theres a single schedule for OES coat changes. I've heard of their coats changing as many as 5 times, over the course of as much as 3 years. And I've heard of some people having a really easy time with their dogs' coat transition, and I've heard of some people having a really tough time.

I've seen some sheepdogs that stay dark gray, and some that go so light as to almost look completely white. And I've heard that they can change color several times before settling on their "adult coat".

I'd say this; is your sheepdog happy? healthy? Then roll with the coat change. I bought a half dozen different shampoos, conditioners, rinses, detangling sprays and combs. And no matter what I do, there are mats. But my dogs are happy, and I just keep working on those mats.

Let us all know where you are; maybe someone here can recommend a groomer in your area that they have had a good experience with!
^Thank you again lol. I'm in pittsburgh ,pa. So yeah if anyone can recomend a groomer there. I live 40 minutes from there but nobody will have ever heard about my 1 stop light town:)

Yeah his coat is really light compared to his 4month year old coat. I call it his "Afro coat". The changes don't bother me whatsoever. He's fine and probably could care less. I jsut moticed the color from his 4month yr old coat and it was so much easier to care for because I could get by with little grooming.

when I started here, I'd read about people's grooming woes, and brag about how easy to care for my girls coats were. They were only 4 or 5 months old, and I thought that I must have been the most consciencous groomer to have such perfect coated sheepdogs. Little did I know, but the dreaded "coat change" had yet to come. Now I groom and groom and groom, and brush and de-mat, and I know it won't last. But its part of having a sheepdog. And I do love sheepdogs....
sounds like he has a course coat (the preferred coat) and you aren't blowing him dry when you bathe him.

I have the same situation with my girl. the mats are really in the undercoat mostly and will happen quicker in a coat change which is why many dogs get shaved at that time..
I think Lisa has posted a general summary of coat changes with photos somewhere. I'll see if I can find it and link it for you. :?
