Then Reality Hits

We've known Oliver has H/D since he was 8 months old. He never really showed any signs, no limping, no whining, no slowing him down. We did the hydrotherapy thing, special diet thing, and the Consequin and thought everything was going well, until this morning.

Last night Oliver didn't want to go for his walk, weird, but it happens sometimes. Instead we played in the back yard, very typical. This morning he would not get up, we had to help him outside to go potty, and when he did stand, he didn't want to put weight on his left rear foot. We have never experienced this before, and is an eye-opening experience for us. I reluctantly went to work, when all I wanted to do was lay in bed and cuddle him.

Not one day goes by that I don't think about his H/D. I don't know how to deal with this, or what to do to help him. I was honestly hoping he would have 4 great years before we had any problems. I don't know why I picked 4 years, I was just hoping. Reality sucks.

it might not be related - sometimes there are other issues with them. How old is Oliver? My Morgan has CHD - I suspected it when he got out of his crate when I first got him and it was confirmed with his two yr old xrays. I feel we haven't been as proactive as you have been - but I think I remember your case being more advanced than ours.

Hopefully he will feel better soon and its only a strain from playing.
Did he do anything excessive in the wild and hairy department before he refused to walk last night? The thing about dysplastic dogs is that they really need exercise to maintain that critical muscle mass (and lean body mass), yet the exercise level may also need to be carefully monitored and that's very hard in a baby dog as I'm sure you already know.

It doesn't strictly speaking have to be his hips, though that's the most likely culprit given his history. With that degree of pain, I'd take him in to the vet and see if pain meds are in order. Massage and perhaps accupuncture may be helpful for the pain, and then perhaps chiropractic adjustments to put his body back into alignment. Do you those kinds of vets in your area? Dogs, like people, compensate in all kinds of unfortunate ways when they're favoring some body part and that can really get them out of whack.

With some rest, hopefully he'll already be feeling a little bit better by the time you get home. It's really devasting to watch them in pain, I know. :ghug:

I agree Kristine....from personal experience...when Millie started to show signs of HD, we took her for acupuncture and I was amazed, after the first round, she had more movement and was able to get up without struggling. She seemed to be painfree also...

She had to go in 2 times a week at first, then once a week after that..I really feel it helped her... I would suggest maybe looking into this.
I'll have to look around... I think we are going to evaluate him this evening, and see if he is feeling any better. We just thought how odd since he has NEVER shown any signs or symptoms before.

I'm secretely hoping somthing else is wrong, but deep down I already know it's his hips-and it sucks because I'm usually right.
I'm so sorry. I can't imagine the heartache you feel every time your cute doggie is in pain. I really hope he feels better and there are some pain meds that help. Big hugs!!!!!!!!! :(
I'm sorry! The same thing happened to Barney recently too. We actually started him on steroids for his allergies at the same time and they seemed to have helped his hips too. Now he bounces all over the place, whereas before he just walked. He had never really shown signs of his HD either, aside from some very mild limping every once in a while and hip clicking until he collapsed on a walk this summer.

I hope that Oliver just strained something while playing and that it isn't his hips...
We are feeling much better this morning. Still a little sore, but he is putting pressue on it, and begged for a walk this morning. We only went 1 block, but he did great.

Thanks so much for your help and support! There have been so many times this is the first place I turn to for advice!
Good to hear things are looking up today!!!
Glad to hear Oliver is feeling better today. :D

Give him a big hug please!
