Barking

My Old English Sheep dog has a tendcy to bark loadly at anyone passing our house. She only does when she is inside but outside she doesn't bark and is really friendly. Why does she do this and how can I make it stop.

Hi! Kenai does the same thing. More so when my husband is gone. I think he tries to be protective. We've had a really hard time trying to get him to stop. But we've taught him how to use "indoor voices" and that has helped. It's really funny when someone comes in and he's excited; he uses his indoor voice which causes anyone who doesn't know him to look at us like, "is he growling at me?" Then we explain.

Kenai also barks a lot when he plays. I'm told it's part of the herding instinct; if it's not, I hope someone will correct me.

We try to keep treats nearby and when he seems to want to bark, we distract him and reward him for not barking. You could try that. ;)

Sheepdogs have LOUD barker boxes  They were bred that way to be heard by the farmers/shepherds. Mine bark loud both at the gate and indoors. I haven't been able to come up with an inside voice......I let them bark to allert me and then bellow for them to be quiet. They go mute immediately. (she who must be obeyed) I want them barking at the gate, the louder the better.

LOL SheepieBoss! But I agree with you - I thought about trying to train the house guarding behavior out of Bailey, then I decided that scaring strangers away is not a bad thing. The invited guests are warned before their first visit that the barking stops upon entrance, but the enthusiastic licking and drooly stuffed toys never end
Barking begins at the gate, once through, that is once I unlock and allow the stranger in, the guys figure the stranger is suppose to be inside. Then it turns to sniff, sniff, lick, lick. Then it's a mad dash for the front door.......so much for allowing the stranger to enter first, they might take the best seats!! Fortunately those who make it to the front door are dog people and enjoy life within the pack. (I hope.)
