Do they know?

Obe loves when we see other dogs and he usually wants to play, but when we see another OES as we did yesterday he goes crazy wanting to play. This has happened a couple of times now and I was wondering if they recognize that it's another OES or do they just see it as another dog. One day he was watching animal planet and they had dogs on, then they did a special on OES and he went crazy and would not move from the tv until the show was over. He will look at you as if he is saying look it's a another OES. I think he knows personally.

I really do believe that the dogs do know if another dog is of their breed. I watch China and Asia who are both Aussies and I really think they know. Violet, my OES, is kinda the outsider. China and Asia are like bookends, usually together, many times, side by side. I will also add that China is Asia's Aunt. Asia was just brought into our lives about 6 mts ago and China/Violet have been together about 5 years.

These are just my observations.
we go to a pretty big enclosed dog park to meet with some other OES owners and their dogs. And with all the different breeds running around, the OES always run together. When Sunshine lets them. She can be a bit bossy.

This is Sunshine's idea of keeping Tonks "out of trouble".
I think they know they are the same. I have dogs that are in companion & show homes. I can take them to other places for play or classes & when they see another OES, they generally get more excited than if it were just another breed.
I have rarely run into other OES owners in the past but once was walking my then 2 faithful girls, both OES's on a beach and in the distance saw the unmistakable shape of sheepdogs way along the beach so rushed the dogs up and sure enough, there were 3 OES playing. My two went crazy with joy and it was hard to drag them away after an hours play, what a sight, and I didnt have a camera on me!
My daughter has a labradoodle and she loves seeing any other dog but if she sees a poodle, she goes crazy. She was bred from a male minature poodle and a female labrador (the mind boggles),so far we havent seen any labs so dont know if she will relate to them but she goes so insane with poodles, she must know.
I also babysat a Cavalier King Charles spaniel fpr a while and she saw another Cav on a walk and went crazy yet ignored every other dog,They MUST know.
I don't know that they know that they're the same breed but I think it's more like when you met someone for the first time and you immediately click with them and it's like you've known them you're whole life. Clyde and Owen jumped right in playing the same way since almost the first day Owen got here. They do the same moves, react the same-- it's very cute and extremely interesting to watch.

I've never had two of the same breed at once and their likenesses are so apparent now. They're four years apart and no direct relation but they have similar mannerisms and even look at you with the same looks!
