Reformed anti cesar millan

Ok, I used to not be a fan of Cesar's... at all.
It does seem most people either love him or hate him, not many are in between.... I never used to like his "methods" and didn't understand what the big deal was.... until recently.

First of all, I must admit I had never even watched a full episode of his show when I had decided I didn't like him. I also think I picked a bad episode to start with, not fully understanding what he was all about. My bad.

What made me decide to watch it again is Bree. LOL She has decided to try to be the dominant dog in my "pack" and it causes some headaches. I had never had any real problems with my dogs before, my own or any rescues I have fostered. I couldn't for the life of me understand what was happening with her.

I watched a couple episodes of Cesar, and without any intentional changes on my part.... things started changing.
I have watched tons of them now, and though I have still not made any intentional changes to our routines etc... I realize that the energy has changed.
I have always been "pack leader" to my dogs, without planning it or thinking about it, but Bree was born into our family and then there were several months where the whole household was in turmoil, grief, and general confusion so that is what she learned. She grew up being a pack leader because I was failing to fill that role at the time.

Anyway, I have now seen her go from obnoxious, loud and in your face to a normal sheepdog again, without me really doing anything except realizing my own attitude had changed during a critical time of her growth.

I'm definitely reformed.... not anti Cesar anymore, now I'm a Cesar addict.

The next step is to work on re socializing Bree. She was somewhat neglected for several months last year, and then when I started showing her another problem reared it's ugly head... she is shy of strangers. Definitely not a normal sheepdog trait, and not good for a showdog.

The rest of her litter are all happy go lucky, amazing dogs so I know it's just her and unfortunately the turmoil in our lives while she was growing up. I hope I can solve this last issue with her. I was so looking forward to seeing a second generation someday from my pretty girl Bree, but if she still has any psychological issues she won't be bred because she would then teach her pups to be wary of strangers. :(

:D I am going to watch Cesar's program later to day.

Very often the dogstory or the situation is too extreme to recognize.
However, I like the things he says about energi;
When I am out of energi
my dogs seems to believe that they can behave like they want to.
They do not really take notice of what I am saying.

When I take a deep breath, stand right up
and really demand and expect them to obey, they do(or he, Sancho, does so).
And in almost every program I have seen (not so many yet)
there is always one or two things that make me think or understand something new. 8)

(I think it may be easier for us to learn to understand the dogs that to expect them to understand us...)
It is very interesting to learn about dogs, I think.
The more "bodylanguage" the dogs learn me - the better I read people too.....
Funny thing to say, maybe,
but I think the dogs very often read our bodylanguage
a lot faster than we are capable too see. 8)
I'm so glad to hear! :clappurple:

I hope things work out for Bree. We'll keep our fingers crossed that you find a solution!

I think it's kind of ridiculous to see cm's own food line, etc out now. I know people will think his food is the best just because he has good training techniques.
I kind of like him but wonder how much they have to edit? I like Victoria Stillwell also but again, miracles performed or the miracle of editing?

I like Victoria too, but not so much her personality. She lacks it a little imo. (just a harder time keeping interest when i watch)
I think I like her accent better than I do her :D
You have to be used to the English personalities. I actually like her better. I think she explains herself better, and it only works when the people do their homework...in both trainers case.
What is the phrase he uses all the time? Calm, quiet, assertive leadership, or some such?

I like Victoria and I agree with you. It is the english way. I used to watch C. Milan every friday but we had to make some cuts and one was to drop some of our dish programming. So no more NG channel

I think she's all right-- her training is good and I really like a lot of what she says. It has nothing to do with cultural differences that make me feel like she's kind of a weirdo, though. My biggest turnoff with her was on that Greatest American Dog show where she threw an absolute hissy fit because someone dared to suggest there were other methods of effective training outside of what she taught. I think the most effective training comes from learning lots of different methods and opinions and combining and customizing what you learn to work effectively with your dog.

I have to agree with that statement. Every dog is different and responds differently to training methods. I have found what works with the GSD definately has no effect on the sheepies. Totally different personalities. Thank goodness the GSD isnt as stubborn as the OES . LOL we would be crazy.

I have always wondered the same thing. I love to watch both shows but always wonder what happened that they DIDN'T show. I have always been a fan of Cesear but then you read article that just don't "jive" with what you see on the show.
As for editing, yeah some has to be done. Recently they had an episode where everything went to H___. Dogs had to be put into kennels (it was at his new (actually being built) rehab center in the mtns. I appreciated seeing that. Even Cesar isn't all perfect. It took more work but yes, by show's end all was well again. I also appreciate when he makes return visits indicating it takes time to make the changes. They don't automatically happen in one day.

Yes, body language is important. I use his "tssssst" on Jack instead of bellowing, works wonders along with the "magic finger". This a.m. Jack was loudly demanding his breakfast and a "tsssst" with the finger and the guy was flat on his belly. I had to put on my glasses to make sure I was really seeing that

Sorry to hear about the dog food. Well, "strike when the iron is hot"....
I still am afraid he sets too many people up for failure - some of which could be quite dangerous. As another not e- my herding instructor is working on some trainer certifications and her intensive training included postions of his show followed by the question - "what did he do wrong?"

Any trainer that still advocates dominance theory and alpha rolls does not inspire much confidence.
I use his TSSSSSSSSSSSSST all the time with TY, he stops in his tracks at the sound!!

I agree that I do not care for his "alpha role" but he is dead on with his "calm dominance". It's amazing how just the "set of your shoulders" can set a tone.
