tartar build up

Okay does anyone have this problem, Laika is 3 in February and it is BAD! I am taking her in for a cleaning and polish it is so bad. Is it a sheepdog thing?? Or just her.

It CAN be a genetic thing but since this does not consume the boards here... I would ASSUME it's not an OES problem generally.

Yuki had REALLY bad tartar. It was disgusting, so she also got a cleaning. She chokes on bones (an option), doesn't chew her food, eats solids not wet food, and drinks filtered water. We also put mouthwash in her water (another option). Brushing her teeth nightly just isn't a practical option for me since we have such a busy lifestyle. Okay... I have time. I just don't want to.

There's also this wax you can put on their teeth regularly. To me... it's a pain in the you know what. It slips right off their teeth and vets swear it's effective and I hear a lot of good things about it... but no more effective than just using a GOOD mouthwash (Same company carries it). I think I use CET Oral Hygiene Rinse.

I have to get my maltese's teeth cleaned every 6 months and this is with all the bones in the world. It's SO bad that even waiting 6 months is long enough. Vet will only recommend the things I've already mentioned when I ask.
Every 6 months! WOW!
This is going to cost over $400! You can bet after paying that I am brushing after every meal.
we switched to raw feeeding just at the same time Morgan was begininng to build up tartar on his teeth. He has the brightest, whitest teeth ever now.

Marley never had much build up and only eats the raw mixes (no bones for miss priss) so I don't see much difference in her teeth.
Laika is on raw she gets chicken necks one a day as well as meat. Just will have to brush every day after her cleaning.
wow I have never heard of a dog on a raw diet with build up!! have you tried turkey necks?
$400 sounds like an awful lot just for a cleaning. With extractions maybe but a plain old cleaning should be about half of that I would think. Is she getting something else done, too?

On motivated days, I use one of those finger brushes on the guys. There is no specific schedule and it's one of those things I have to be in the mood to do since they don't exactly love it. They'll tolerate it, but they don't come running. I find it a lot easier than an actual brush but I know the brush is probably better.
If Laika is on a raw diet then give her a Raw Meaty Bone to Chew on every so often. I buy a big beef Marrow Bone, get the butcher to saw it into 4 pieces and give that to her. It does wonders for the teeth, chicken necks not so not enough chewing to keep the teeth clean.

Can Laika also have a good hard dog bikkie too, to help keep the Tartar down?

I don't clean the teeth I give a good hard bikkie everyday and about once a fortnight they have a bone to munch.

The only time I have had teeth done is when at 5-6 the girls were knocked out for spaying and at that time the teeth were still quite white due to bones and hard bikkies.

Kelsey is 13 1/2 and no tartar at all and still gets a hard Bikkie each day and a bone every so often and last time she had her teeth done was when she was spayed at 6.

So maybe look at a Hard Crunch for Laika in her raw diet to help

This is super advice for your Laika, and I will add one other possability it can come from hard water, so either boil the water or give her still water out of a bottle.
I am getting her hips x-rayed just to start doing prevention if I have to. I do give her meaty bones. It is mainly the canine teeth. I do have hard water! everything stains red. Hmm interesting.

They also do a polish as well, I learned that if they don't do that which my last vet did it just makes it worse.

Thanks for the ideas!
I am getting my poodle done in the end of Oct Cost is also $400.00 but I am getting a tooth pulled also(in the price) I did phone around they all said 400 to 700. EVERYTHING in Alberta is high price these days. My oes are doing great but they do chew bones my poodle does not.
That is SO STEEP!!

My bill shows $261. No extractions.
I had Simon's done last year. I know it was under $300 = I think under $250. And that included 6 teeth getting pulled, and F/U ABX.

Simon is youthful at 9, but he has really bad teeth. He has had 14 pulled in the 3 years I have had him.

Just like people I guess - some have good strong teeth, others have rotting nasty teeth. :(
