Morgan is sick

I had to take Morgan to the vet today (I knew he was sick when He didn't eat last night). Of course our lone vet called in with a personal emergency so I had to take him to a different practice. He has a fever of 104.5, is still vomiting and beginning to dehydrate. he is at the vet's on an IV, and they are xraying for an obstruction, testing for lyme etc etc.

I called our herding instructor to see if anyone from the clinic reported anything - of course there were only four dogs on thursday and friday and two were Morgan and Marley. Although no one had contacted her about a sick dog - one of her sheep died unexpectedly today. Dan thinks I need to tell the vet about that. I am not sure how that helps.

Whether you think that info on the sheep helps or not, tell the vet. Let them make the decision of what info is helpful. Often times we are too close to the situation to see this stuff. Here is hoping he is doing better.
I am so sorry about Morgan....Please keep us posted..Thinking of both of you and saying a prayer.
oh gosh; we'll be sending positive thoughts and prayers your way.

I'd tell the vet about the unexpected death of the sheep at herding. You never know what may or may not be important.
positive thoughts are with you! hope he feels better soon!
Tell the vet about the sheep dying wether that has something or not to do with Morgan.

Seems unusual that the sheep died and Morgan is unwell now so mention it, that he has been around sheep.

Campylobacter and other things can be transmitted from unwell sheep to dogs through shared water or even sheep poo. So I would definately tell the vet even if it has not got any relevance in Morgans situation just in case. The more the vet knows the better chance of him finding out what has made Morgan unwell.

Thinking of your baby and hoping he will be well soon.
I am so sorry to hear about Morgan. We are sending healing vibes his way.

Sorry to hear about Morgan. Hope all goes well at the vet and that Morgan will be on the mend
I hope Morgan starts feeling better fast. :( I would yell the vet about the sheep, also any other exposures he has had lately.

Just checking to see how Morgan is this morning. Please keep us posted. Sendings good vibes your way.
Morgan spent the night at the vet's. this morning he still has a very high fever, his heart rate is down a bit (it was very high yesterday - but he stresses easily), he is rehydrated a bit and they gave him medication to control the vomiting. The x ray doesn't show an obvious obstruction. He has tested positive for lyme and his blood work is coming back consistent with either a gastro intestinal infection or pancreatitis. he will be going to his regular vets clinic in the morning and probably staying for a few more days.

On a lighter note - my husband has this thing about not waking me up in the morning. his theory is I am a big girl, I can get up and go to work on my own. Most mornings the dogs get me up before 7. this morning I woke up at 8 (I leave for work at 8:15) Apparently Morgan is the morning dog - Marley was all tucked up in bed with me and in no hurry to go out in the rain
Hi Kerry,
Has your vet also checked for toxins? This sounds suspiciously like there is a poisoning here, especially since the sheep died. Have they used any pesticides in the area they were in or have they done any aerial spraying for West Nile. All things to consider.

My best wishes for a quick recovery.

It was one sheep from a large herd - most likely another issue I would think. During the clinic Morgan was in his crate while not actually on the sheep so I doubt he picke dup anything there honestly. It just seemed odd to me. I did tell the vet and he doesn't see a connection, but I will also bring it up when I transfer him to my own vet tomorrow.

thanks
Poor Morgan! I hope he starts feeling better soon and that whatever they find, it's nothing serious. Belly rubs and gentle ear rubs to that special boy, please! :ghug:
Thanks for the update.

Seems like we've had quite a few dogs on here with Lyme's this year.

Hugs to Morgan.
A friend of mine's Norfolk recently became very ill and they thought it was pancreatis. It turned out to be Lyme's Disease. I hope Morgan is on the mend.

was he vomiting as well? that seems to be the reason they think the lyme is incidental to his condition.
Hope you have a speedy recovery. Miley sends well wishes.

Yes, vomiting and the fever. At first they were treating for Pancreatitus and then realized it was lyme. They treated him with Doxy and now he's fine. Few hairy days though worrying. They live in Northern NJ.
hope he is getting on OK... :(
get better soon Morgan.
Hoping he's feeling better. Any word today?

thanks everybody fro your good thoughts. I just brought Morgan home. I moved him to our regular vet today and he tweaked his Iv a bit. he has kept a little food down for about three hours now (and is looking for more  ).

the pancreatitis can be caused by many factors, including the fact that he had anesthetia last week. right now the plan is to ease him back into food (using prescrition for a few days) and keep him metronizole.

We will be reintroducing his thyroid meds on Monday and in about ten days he is going to have a CB6 (I think - lots of names and numbers being floated around) to test for the extent of the Lyme and determine treatment. He doesn't want to put him on the Doxy with an already inflamed pancrease because it can cause inflammation as well.

He came home and drank a large amount of water- went out for a pee and is now sleeping in th breakfast room alone. I honestly used the hose on his poopy but in the driveway befor ehe came in the house and can't wait until he is feeling up to a bath - my new blde should be here on Tuesday and there is a bath and a haircut in his future.

When I take Morgan in for the Lyme test we will test Marley as well even though she is a aymptomatic - now I just have to figure out how to pay the thousand dollars worth of vet bills I ran up in the last ten days - thank goodness for VISA
Glad Morgan is home! :D
We will keep our paws crossed for
continual progress!
Good Luck Morgan!!!
Feel better baby!
I'm so glad Morgan's home and feeling better.
Please keep us posted on how he's doing.
I'm glad to hear that Morgan is feeling well enough to come home.

Been there done that before. Somehow we always find a way.

Seriously, I am glad to hear Morgan is doing so much better. I've been wondering how he was doing. Keep us posted.
Soo glad Morgan is doing better!!!! :D :D
Glad Morgan is home and feeling better.
I'm also glad to hear Morgan is getting on the mend. It is the worst thing when your pup feels bad and can't tell you exactly what is going on!! Keep us updated for sure.
So glad to hear that Morgan is home and feeling better. :phew:

Hugs from us.

How is Morgan doing now? We have been thinking about you.....

He's doing well - demanding more food all the time. He gets retested for Lyme next week so they can determine his treatment, but he is getting back to his bouncy old self. I think he may even make his herding class Sunday

thank you for your concern.
