Shaving their armpits?!?

I know this is going to sound a bit weird. I dropped the girls off at their regular doggie day care today, and asked them to be bathed. Its the first time we are doing it at this place. They are always so booked, I can never get the girls in! And the only other professional grooming they have had was in early June when they got their summer cuts.

So I drop the girls off and talk with the groomer for a few minutes. I let her know in no uncertain terms to NOT cut any mats out. That if she can't comb them out, to leave them and I can work on them from home. The girls are 11 months old, and are going through their coat changes. They mat up daily, and every night I work out a few more.

The groomer checks them over, and comments that I've been doing a good job; they have very few mats. She checks there armpits, where I know there are some, but I have been working on them. She's surprised that the girls let me, saying its a very sensitive area (don't I know it!) and do I just want her to shave their armpits to make it easier for myself?

I've never heard of that. I told her not to, as I was unfamiliar with the practice. Has anyone else heard of this, and care to comment?

yep - they even do it with show dogs. honestly who notices?
Yup, I've always done it with Clyde. Once the hair is over a few inches long, you can't see what has hair and what doesn't.
*runs to quickly call groomer and ask her to do it to the girls!*
We always shave the armpits, and the stomach here.
thanks for the feedback everyone! I'd never heard of it before; I knew to do the hair between their pads and a "hygiene trip" around the fluffy butt areas. But this one is new to me. I called the groomer and caught her before she'd started; so she's going to do it! So now another question; is it a service that is normally charged extra for? The bathing service at my doggie daycare includes things like anal glands, pad furn and nail trimming and hygienic shave.
I would think not. If they charge you for it, I'd just have them not do it next time and hack it off myself. It's definitely not an area you have to be precise on!
I get Henry's done but only the bit that knots ..... the outer edge of the armpit one very small spot......it's part of the service here.
It should be part of the service. I always have bellies and pits shaved. Makes for a cleaner pup. LOL
Wow I didn't know about this, either! Makes sense . . .
Never ever shaved the armpits, I just use a small comb to get the knottys out of that area and fingers to prise apart the knot before putting the comb through it. 8)
The amount of shaving advice that is on this website would have one thinking people work in a certain sector of the movie industry!

Because when it grows it felts quicker.

Bellies no , I just trim around the equipment for Hygiene, girls a trim on the twat and a trim around the outlet pipe, boys on the tip of the dingle and a little bit in front of that to help the squirt stream and their outlet pipe also

Now we are hoping "Syd" will cock that leg soon and stop squirting on the back of his front legs, Boys are so Grotty compared to neat squatting dainty girls. :?   I bathed the boy yesterday, all white, took him out for a potty one of those forever pees and Crikeys hit the front legs and I thought the pee stream was never going to stop 8O Babette not a drop on her :P

See now I have the opposite problem. Beauie, his aim is good no problem. Sophie on the other hand always has a trickle of pee running down her leg. Her problem seems to be she doesnt wait until she is done, she takes off running while still peeing. Too interested in play and not pee.   I'm hoping she will outgrow this she is 7 mos. I've even tried letting her outside without the big dogs but something always catches her eye and she's off and running.
Obe's belly is shaved year round just less work for me. I 've never had his armpits shaved, l just brush them daily/every other when I brush his head from being in a top knot. He is going on the 17th of Oct maybe I will ask her to shave them with his belly.
