question about bringing dog to show

So if I want to go see a show and bring my dog to get him used to the atmosphere, where do I find out if I am allowed to bring unenetered dogs. I was just on the club that is hosting the show's website but cant find any info on it, only a map as to how to get there. I dont just take my dog in case they let us in right?? help anyone

all the males at the show will be intact so I don't see an issue - you just need to control him as you would at any time and stay out of the way of people showing.

I had a young intact male at a show and found if a bitch was in heat - the handler would make that clear when I got near - just so I could be prepared.

I am sure others with more show experience willl have something to add.
Is it un entered or un neutered ?? I believe un entered 8O
you know cindy I think you are right

In that case - they always say you can't in the paperwork - and I always see unentered (or nonparticipating) dogs at shows
Any dog that is not entered is not supposed to be on the show grounds. (AKC rule) but, people bring their dogs at times. No other rules, other than make sure you keep him under control.
A lot of outside agility trials will not state no unentered dogs. Meaning we all bring some at one time or another. The way to know this for sure is to read the premium, which can often be found online. First you have to know about the show, though.

If it's AKC, you can look up events by venue, timeframe and state(s).

Go to http://www.akc.org/events/search/

They don't typically list premiums, but I think some listings may link to a club's website and you can typically find it there. Or cross-reference if it's agility and look it up on Clean Run's event pages:

The other thing you also going to want to do as you get closer to getting the dog(s) ready for trialing is find run thrus (some times called show-and-go's") and fun matches. I just sent info on a couple to Judi today (St Louis.) Typically, to find out about these, you need to talk to the people you train with. And your instructor(s), of course. I don't think they are listed anywhere central, but the more involved you get, the more "in the loop" you are.

The greater Milwaukee area is wonderfulf for obedience run-thrus. I can find one pretty much any Friday of the month. Fun matches are harder to find, especially agility ones. And the same with agility run-thrus, though we do have them if you're willing to drive a bit more. It really varies from area to area what you have available.

I just took Sybil to her first ever run-thru tonight. Her agility instructor has been pushing me to do so for some time, but I just didn't think she was ready. I was wrong. She was awesome. These are the things you need to know before you enter a trial. In the event you discover that your dog is not so awesome in some area  This gives you the time and opportunity to work on things. In her case she's not awesome enough to be entered in a trial yet. But she's quickly getting there and I'll take her to more run-thrus further afield as we progress. That way when I step up to the line with her for the first time for real, we can both be pretty confident that we know what we're doing. Or at least know that neither of us will leave the ring or jump on the judge

Off to write her instructor another "yes, I know you told me so" e-mail. Maybe I should just get it tattoed on my forehead.

(mark it in your calendar, Kerry: the day Ms Sybil's brain arrived. I hope it's not just a loaner 8O   )

does that also mean we need to offer you happy birthday wishes?

You know I knew sybil wuld be great whenever you got over your own issues and took her out to play.

It could have been in the air - because Miss Marley did quite well at her lesson with Ann Witte yesterday. our instructor kept saying "that's a different dog!".

No birthday wishes. Her trial debut date remains top secret

This was just a run-thru which instructor has been telling me to do all summer, but I've been dragging my feet all summer because I just didn't feel like we were connecting.

It's encouraging in a sort of "well, maybe I'll actually be celebrating my birthday as opposed to drowning my embarrassment in cake" kind of way

Nice work with Marley and the sheep!! Isn't it interesting what a difference various instructors can make? I wish we had an upright person closer to us. Oh, I know long time herding people who insist it makes no difference, but maybe it makes more of a difference to the rank novice? I loved working with Belle but I felt we made no progress whatsoever since I had no idea what was good and bad about what she was doing or how to influence it. Maybe I just need a herding instructor on par with my favorite obedience and agility instructors? Skilled in communicating "Herding for Dummies".

Hm. Need to contemplate that one. Wisconsin is not a good are for herding. Minnesota is much better in that regard.

having been to more "traditional" instructors than uprights (and me regular instructor is a protege of Ann's so uses her methods), I can say there is no way it doesn't make a difference. Ann has broken it down to where it makes sense to our dogs (and there perhaps dimwitted handlers  )

unfortunately we can't get the morgan video to work on either of our laptops - I'll try the desktop later. but it is amazing to me to watch lazy (monkey butted) morgan moving sheep around the pen. he should even be graduating to the big pen soon!! he is so funny to watch because there is no wasted energy. he even at one point (not on the video) figures out "If I just turn toward that crazy running sheep he'll join hi sfriends and I can just stand here" No wasted energy on Morgan. it is so different than learning stay out stay out stay out that so many traditional instructors focus on.

I talked to Ann again yesterday and she would love to be on our performance website - with her connections she will really be able to help people all over find good instructors (she goes back 40 years in dogs and is a herding judge etc etc etc.)

She loved Miss Marley - of course she and Jere go way back as well - and said she should be trialing quickley. Hope she learns to drive and fill out entry forms
