Do steroids make them hungry?

I don't know if it's just been since we've been giving Barney steroids, but Barney seems hungrier than usual. He's turning into a scavenger and patrols the floors (which I don't mind, lol), but he never used to do that. Like if a chip drops, he's there in 2.5 seconds, whereas before he's never even come over to investigate.

Do you think it's the steroids? Or he's just figured out that it's a good thing to find dropped food? Or something else?

Definitely steroids! It also makes them pee more frequently.

:)
When one of my sheepies would not eat my vet gave her some steriods to get her eating again so I would think that it would make them hungerier.
Drink more.
Wee more.
Will want to eat more but control the food... maybe use veggies as treats/fillers.
May become easier to excite.

Our schip or cattledog mix was on prednisone for a short time because
she was allergic to paint fumes... she had all of these.
yup! i know i wasnt on the same type of steroids during chemo....but mine made me gain 19 lbs!!! the nurses had told me that they would but i didnt believe them until i stepped on the scale every 3 weeks...lol....

barns will be fine...just more to love...and if it helps his problem, a puuffy barney is a happy barney....

panda says that they are quite the pair 8)
Thanks everyone!

I hadn't even thought of that, Jaci, but Barns has been crazy lately too---lots of running around the house and just plain excited all the time. Didn't even think about it.

We're not giving him any more food than usual (except for what he finds on the floor--which I swear isn't a lot!)...but should we? He's down to 83 pounds (at last vet check), whereas 2 months before he was 91 pounds...
83 pounds? Clyde said Barney sounds like a skinny little girly man now.

He is a skinny little girly man! A shadow of his former self.

He looks the same to me, but I can't imagine him being 15+ pounds heavier, which he used to be. This weight is better for his hips, though, although I don't know how he lost so much weight. It could be because we switched him to a more quality, fewer ingredient food...
It does increase the hunger enormously, there piglets while on it and same with the water.

I had to regulate how much water my peppa was given when she was on it as the pee flow was rivers in the house. 8O She also counter surfed (never ever did that before), vacuumed the floor for the most meager crumb and just about swallowed my arm whole when hand feeding a treat. :?

It settled down after she stopped the drug and make sure with Barney (Slim Taut Boy) not to increase the amount he is getting and when ready to take him off it, wean off slowly over time don't just stop the dose cold turkey.
It can increase their sugar too. It's a good idea to watch what they eat.

Just additional info about steroids-
The reason for weaning the dog off them slowly is so the adrenal glands will again begin working. Steroids suppress the adrenal glands so they have to be coaxed into again taking over. It can be dangerous to stop the drug abruptly.

Quote:
Addison's disease may also be caused by the abrupt discontinuation of steroid medication. Dogs that have been on long-term steroids should be slowly weaned off such drugs. Abruptly stopping the medication can result in an Addisonian crisis.
