What the-- HUMPING?!?

Okay; I'm totally stumped.

For those of you that don't know; I have Tonks and Luna, sibling sheepdog females. They are half sisters; same sire, but different dams. They are almost 11 months old. And tonight Tonks did the darnedest thing. She mounted Luna and began humping her!!! 8O

I made her get off, and I left the room. I walked back in a few minutes later and she was doing it again! WHAT THE HECK is that about?!? I thought humping was a hormone driven instinct in MALE dogs. A testosterone fueled action. What gives? Should I call my vet? Could Tonks have learned it from male dogs at day care? I'm SO baffled right now!!! I almost looked under Tonks to see if she'd grown boys-bits!

I have had two female sheepies do the same so your not alone.I pretty much tried to turn around and ignore them when they did it,and tell them no.
My mum's great dane does the same thing.. but only to other female dogs, never the boys :?: :?: :?: It's a weird one, but I did hear that it's just another way of showing dominance

This happens a lot when you have two dogs of the same sex it is purely a question of dominance, I have never seen it happen between a dog and a bitch except when she is ready for mating, I would not worry too much about it.
Well....China humps Asia....China is Asia's Auntie. We've only had Asia a few months but not to long ago China started to hump Asia, but I did notice that it is usually when she wants to get "playing" started, or they are already playing. The Aussies do play alot together. I did watch Asia, one time, start to mount Violet OES, but thought better of it. To be honest with you, it just reminds me of wrestling.

I don't make a big deal out of it...just stop them if there are people around. My brother had lab females that did the same thing.
Bwahaha. OK, so now I have to confess to my little perverts.

I've only seen it in dogs of a similar age, regardless of intact status, regardless of gender, it does seem to be dominance related but also triggered by excitement (playing beforehand). My two girl siblings hump each other periodically. It's happening less as they mature. Their neutered brother humps both of them, doesn't matter if they're in season or not, though that does get him going more, I've had them checked for UTIs (haven't run a brain scan on him to look for brain damage, but that would be my next move if I really cared  ) One sister isn't thrilled about it so I notice he leaves her alone mostly now, but Sybil just stands there with a big grin on her face.

One day all three were on the sofa with Sybil humping Macy and Che humping Sybil. They're little pervs is my conclusion. A visiting rescue dog - young, spayed bitch - some times tries to hump my girls, but she usually gets told off. Looks like they prefer to keep it all in the family.

As long as they stop when I tell them to, don't bother the mature dogs and wouldn't think of trying it with a person, it really doesn't bother me. They only do it around the house which is good because I worry about them offending people with delicate sensibilities or me having to explain my dogs' odd behavior to their young children.

Your girls are still at a testing age so the behavior doesn't surprise me and I bet they'll grow out of it, but just keep telling them off or knock it off or whatever you tell them to get them to quit and it will probably fade sooner. Nothing to worry about.

Hi!
I saw this too some years ago.Alika was the first time "läufig"dont know the english word but it means that she was bleeding(you know)
We have been sitting in the garden. She went to my old Lady and showed her her back. The older one sniffeld and looked at me with question in her eyes.A whole hour Alika always went to her and showed her the back to a
tell her she would like that Affair shoul jump on her. Then Fairly checked it and humped on her.It was so funny. The both Ladies hanging on each other and dont know what to do now. After a while they decided that this behaviour doesnt fit.
But we laughed the whole evening!

Our GSD that passed two years ago did this right AFTER we had her spayed. She would even hump our legs. I thought she was really confused with her girl parts missing   It lasted about a week or two then she stopped.
That ole dominance thing....
Quin humps the air and usually
when we are driving down the road
and people are looking!
we have been having a bit of that - with neutered Morgan doing it to the intact male puppy (8 months old) It really seems to be dominance related and does often occur when their play gets out of line.

I always pu t a stop to it. Its funny he never did/does it to our intact female - but then when they were little she used to hump him so I guess he knew who wore the pants in that relationship.
Our female BC humps our male retriever but not the sheepdog because he's too big for her. The sheepie and the BC are BFF's and play constantly. He'll try to hump her but hasn't quite got it figured out -- he tries to hump her head! Too funny! They're all neutered, BTW.
