Looking into getting an OES puppy

Hi I'm new here and I am looking into getting an OES puppy. I was wondering if you thought I would be a compatible with the breed.

Here is some info on myself. I am almost 19 I will be moving next year to go to college but I will be living in an appartment or townhouse. I have had a dog before he was a labxgolden retriver and he passed on in Jan of this year we had him for almost fifteen years. My parents have a lab that they inherited from a friend. I love to groom dogs so I dont mind brushing them an hour a day if they need it. I also would not have any problems getting up extra early in the morning to take the dog for a walk and then another walk in the evening to make sure he got his excersise. I would also be getting the puppy months before I moved out and would probably have a few months at my new place before starting school. I know its a huge responsibility to own a puppy but I have grown up with animals my whole life and I think I am ready to have a dog of my own again.

I was also wondering about buying a puppy without meeting it. I really want a puppy from a reputable breeder but I have not been able to find any near me. I live in SW Washington state. What are things I should look for and questions I should ask if I cannot find any good breeders near me and have to buy without meeting the puppy first?

Yes, I think you would be a great sheepdog owner. Sounds
like you have experience with caring for dogs and have
researched about the extra care in grooming that an Old English
requires.

My concern is timing for you. A college schedule is very busy,
and often requires being at school for long days. You also will
have a busy social life as well. An OES puppy grows up to be
a large dog, males can be in the high 90's to 100 lbs. Ideally
need a large yard to play and run off energy, in addition to walks.

He/she would require being put outside during the day as well.

Not trying to discourage you, but suggesting you might want
to wait until you get settled after you finish school. You would
then be able to fully enjoy caring and playing with your pup.

The reason why I suggest this is that I had an OES while in college.
My situation was a little different, I lived at home and commuted
to school. It took the 3 of us (myself and parents) to care for him
during the day. All of us had jobs and I had school and a part time job,
but our work committments were close to home.

Everyones situation is different, only you can decide if this is the
right time for you. My vote is to wait until after finishing college.
As you search the site, you will see that OES need lots of attention.
They bond with there owner and "velcro" on to you. You will want
to fully enjoy the experience. :D

Good luck with school !

They have a breeder referral program as well.
Hi!
Only one time I selled a puppy without knowing and meeting the new owner. But that was a lady who had Bobtails since more than 25 years and all the time two of them. Now one dog died and the other one was 3 years old.We phoned a lot of times and after some time I decided to give her one of my babys.I drived to Vienna to bring it to his new home. And to have a look at the new owner.
If the situation is diffrent I dont know if I would do it.
How is the practice in USA?

Zahra- I have thought about that as well but I will only be a part time student and will hopefully have a job on campus so that I can have a flexible schedual and be able to go home to the dog during the day. I will also be taking some online classes so that I will have more time at home. I really think I want a townhouse since in that area they are only a little more expensive than a decent appartment so the dog would have a yard just not a huge one but I would definately make sure the puppy gets all the excersise and playing that it needs. Thanks for the link and your input.
FarmGirl, I sent you a PM. When you get a chance, check your messages. :)

Sounds like a plan!

Good luck with finding your puppy :D

And please keep us posted!
Hi there :D

In terms of how much time you would have to spend with your pup, it really depends on your individual workload, etc. I'm only 19 myself, but i have been at university for 2 years now so I'm fairly settled in. My uni only requires me to be in for about 5 hours a day and my partner works shifts, so he covers the times when I'm out of the house. If you are like me and have a smallish workload, then i think this can actually be one of the best times to have a pup, as you're not working full time ;)

Anyway, good luck with your studies :D
Perhaps you could volunteer with a local OES rescue group in your area, it might give you a chance to see if you have enough time in your busy uni schedule to commit to a puppy? best of luck either way :D
