BAD & SUPER UGLY Highlights

I have been having major trouble finding someone to color & cut my hair since moving to MN. Anyway, I went and had my hair highlighted the other day and it is beyond bad - it is really blond ( bright white streaks minxed with dark brown.) I don't want to go back and have it fixed- this is the second time going to this person and the first time she lowlighted way too dark and cut a ton of my already thinning hair off. I think she doesn't understand when I say "subtle." I like to look natural - and instead I look like a natural disaster. Is there anything anyone would suggest I do? I was wondering if any of those colored shampoos would help tone the blond down.

I am sure you can color over it...just check on the box and see what the color will be over blond. I would suggest Loreal preference though...they seem to be better than some off the others. I color over all my sheepie colored roots all the time. So sorry you are having a bad hairdresser day.
I hate it when my hair isn't right, so I know how you feel.

Hope you get it sorted soon!
I would go back to the person, even if they've done a bad job before. It's their fault, and they should fix it!
That is true!

I know I should - but I have NO faith in her. None. I just can't go back. There is no one in this area that I trust and I just called a couple of the well known salons in Minneapolis and they don't have anything for a week. Ugh. Oh well -
Don't color over it yourself! If you have white blond highlights, that's going to suck up color like crazy because it's so porous and you might wind up way too bright in those areas. Sometimes it needs to be filled first. But, if it isn't too bad, it may just need some toner. I'd definitely go back and just try to fix one thing that you hate, like tell her the highlights are too white and you'd like them toned down. That part might be an easier fix depending on how light you are.

Then I'd start shopping for someone new. What city in MN are you? My stylist teaches for L'Oreal and travels everywhere and knows a million people. Maybe I can ask her to recommend a salon. It's kind of a stretch since we're pretty far apart but you never know!
I feel bad for you - that has happen to me before. I would do what butterscotch says but if you absolutely do not want to go back to the salon - go to a beauty supply store and buy a rinse for your hair instead of a color to tone down the white color. Ask the person working there to help you. I have thininng hair so I used a rinse first so it didn't damage my hair to much then I got it re-done. good luck in what ever you do

Ok - I just called to reschedule - She will have to call me back - Hopefully it won't get worse.

I am in the St Cloud area - but I am only an hour away from Minneapolis. I have no problem driving a couple of hours if I could find someone who knew what to do. If your stylist could suggest someone, I would be forever grateful.
I'll ask her the next time I'm in-- which will be soon. I'm back to being red again so there's a lot of upkeep!
The easiest way to find a great stylist is to ask the people you see with great hair where they go. A few will lie to you, but most are flattered and will tell you.
If you already don't like what was done, what make you think it wil be better a second time.
hehe - you should really check out a groomers reputation and abilities before using them

  Well now I have an answer when people ask what color I'm covering......sheepdog. Since I have no clue what it is now, other than as a youth I had dark roots and blond hair, now I have light roots with red hair.
As Jill said, you may need a filler, however , a toner could do the trick. Sounds like she may have used a titanium bleach for your highlights. This will pull a realy bright white/ blond. If this is the case, a toner will help incorporate the blond and brown nicely.

Good luck!!!

This could really help. Ask the people you work with...friends and co-workers are usually great at this. Then you weed through and find the best.

This from a person who took years to find someone who knows what I want and can cut it right...the first time.
Oh, that is a crappy deal. :(

I have a good one, but driving to Mankato may be a stretch. She is a gem though!!
Get the clippers out, if they are good enough for the hounds then surely they are good enough for you?

I was actually close to this earlier today. :)

Thanks everyone for your advice - I really do appreciate it. The funny thing is --I found this stylist by asking someone in a dept. store who their stylist was. I really liked the person's cut - - - what I am realizing now - is that it was the hair cut I liked and but I can't even remember now if I liked the color - or if it was even colored. I am going in on Saturday to get the blond toned down. Hopefully it will turn out. Thanks again!

Unless you live in the South. I had a great hair guy in CA that I went to for years and loved, so I was at a loss when I moved here. Everyone I asked was VERY evasive when I asked where they got their hair done. It was weird.
We have TONS of great hair stylists in the Los Angeles area...long way to go for your hair though.

ha ha ha--I still go home to get my hair done...
I am a professional hair dresser. DO NOT color over really blonde highlights, yourself!!! You could end up with super ashy swampy looking streaks, because if it's really too light, the pigments need to be put back in to your hair, before a brown ( or natural level color) is chosen. You could end up crying with a swamp green mess, and finding a colorist to fix it, for a really really high "corrective color" fee. My suggestion would be to check out the yelp comments for the salons and even beauty schools (some can do really good work, but they are super slow. You pay with your TIME.) I wouldn't tell them what your problem is, but go in and tell them you want a consultation before a color service. You can always leave if you don't "feel confident" about their work. I have also asked to see portfolio pics. Most students or new talent level 1 stylists (;icensed pros who may be assisting in a high end salon and learning but are GOOD and cheaper than the level 4 or master stylists). They may charge you for a just a toner (if they are super chill and looking for a new client, OR they may charge for a double process color. (Meaning they put the brown, red and orange tones back in to the blonde streaks and then even out your all over color to "get rid of the bad streaks. ) Unfortunately, if there are really bad lowlights, you will need to let them either FADE (hopefully they didn't use a permanent color) OR lighten it with ligthener (bleach) to remove the ugliness. Sorry this happened. I always recommend a decent, well-respected near to high end salon for that kind of work. I like to put just a few highlights in my clients hair, and let ribbons of light come from the haircut. (A new trend for the OMBRE look and traditional highlighting techniques. Less regrowth & upkeep because the base color falls over and "veils" the regrowth line. It's the "Eva Longoria effect." Nothing worse than getting super dark lowlights (that seem BLACK to the client) or super fat and streaky ZEBRA highlights. EW. SO NOT CUTE. I hope this helps. I think everyone should LOVE their hair. If you were in CA, I'd fix you up just to prove I could do it. HEE Hee. Good luck/
Do you have a picture of yourself with your hair the way you want it colored/highlighted? If you do, keep it in your purse so you can show the hair stylist exactly what you want. Fashion changes so often that if we say "highlight" now they are big bold streaks, where is we really want "streaking". Good luck fixing your hair, but pictures say a thousand words.
