Allergie

Hi!
Today I might ask those of you who also have an allergic dog, what do you do to help your sheepie?
Alika is now 5 years old and since two years she is getting Cortison. We tryed every other possibilyties.Either natural health nor school medicine did help her.But I know that Cortison is very dangerous because of sideeffects.
Are there some new possibilities to heal allergics in Amerika ?
Susanne
P.S.excuse my bad english,please

I'm sorry your dog has this problem. We have two dogs that have allergies and we are also trying to avoid steroids because of the side effects :( We have not found any safe and easy cures for the this problem.

Bathing the dog every 3-5 days seems to help some. Using two different antihistamines might offer some relief... we're currently doing a 7 day trial of hydroxozine and clemastine fumarate. If this doesn't work, we're going to do a 7 day trial of Elavil (a human antidepressant) to see if it helps. You might also check into Doxipen (also a human antidepressant). My dog can't take it because she is on medication for low thryoid but her half-sister in Georgia has had great results with it.

To temporarily sooth the itch, we bathe her every 3-5 days just to rinse off the pollens or allergens that she might come in contact with. If we see her itching, we are also spraying her with Listerine which quickly soothes the itch but first check with your vet to see if this is acceptable. This is what she did to her head the other night- http://oesusa.com/DarbysItch91011.jpg

I think the most important thing is to try to figure out the cause so you might be able to avoid whatever is causing the itch. Skin (dermal) testing or RAST blood testing may help. Allergy shots seem to have helped one of our dogs but the other with the worst seasonal allergies has seen no benefit from 3+ years of shots.

I hope others will post with non-steroidal allergy treatments that might help...
Hi!
We knew the causes of allergie. But we cant evoid grass and other things in nature.Without Cortison she was so ill that I have already been at the vet to beg him to make an end. That was the sadest day in my life.
In the moment she is fine,so she plays with her son and runs around with much fun and joy.
I pray that she will be with me for some more years.

Hi susanne welcome, sorry to hear about your girl. What country do you live in? Your english is fine too :D

Is there a "Holisitic Vet" in your country that maybe can help with more of a natural therapy to help with the air borne Allergies your sweetie suffers from rather then a long term approach of Cortisone? Cortisone is a short term solution and being on it for years can lead to other problems.

What sort of food is she on?

Some foods can aggreviate the allergy problem as well.
Hi!
Alika has an allergy against:grass-Mix,Roggen,Beifuß,Birke,Weide,Brennessel,Alternaria,Cladosporium herbarum,Dermatofagoides farinae,Tyrophagus putrescentie,Acarus,Rind(Cow),Mais,Fisch,Weizen,Hafer,
Thats the things found in the blood-test.
She gets Zink,Colloidal-silver and other homöopathic things. But without Cortison...no way.
I will be thankful for any kind of help and advice.
Susanne
P.S.We live in Austria
Have you tried a dermatology/allergy vet specialist? They can detemine the allergens & make up a solution for you to desensitive your dog to these allergens. It requires an injection, at first is small does weekly, graduating up to a higher dose & then eventually being able to slack off to maybe every other week or even once a month. My first show dog had allergy problems. We handled it this way & she lived to be almost 12 years old, grew back a nice coat, finished her AKC CH with me handling (a novice handler), passed her CGC & had a CD in obedience & was working on her CDX. She lived a much healthier, comfortable life after we were able to control the allergy this way. I spayed her at 3 years of age, well after she finished her AKC CH. No intention of breeding her as this type of allergy is genetically transmitted.
Hi!
Yes we tried this injektions. But Alikas reaction was so strong that we had to give it up.Although she only got half of the dosis the vet said.

We've done the shots for years and haven't seen good results in the dog with severe seasonal allergies. Our vet is checking into doing dermal or skin testing for us.

This is the medication schedule we are currently trying. We saw our vet yesterday and the clemastine is to fill in when the hydroxyzine begins to wear off. You might ask your vet if it's safe for your dog to try. Darby now has her cone off and the itching has been under control for the past 18 hours... too early to say it's working but it looks promising.

5am- 50mg of hydroxyzine
10am to 11am- 2.68mg of clemastine fumarate
1pm- 50mg of hydroxyzine
8pm- 50mg of hydroxyzine
9pm to 11pm- 2.68mg of clemastine fumarate

Our next step will be to add Elavil (amitriptyline) if this isn't enough. We continue to search for the true cause of her seasonal itching. Just trying to avoid steroids or cyclosporin unless there's no other hope for a near normal life.
