hair in the sheepie eyes

Good Morning Sheepie Lovers

I was wondering something and thought maybe you all could help. I grew up with OESwhen I was younger and now that I am older I got one of my own.My mother always said NEVER clip the hair away from their eyes the light hurts them........ is this true? I feel my sheepie can't see with the hair over her eyes! She is so clumsy and runs into everything or is it she just can't see????? :?

Nope, that's not true at all.
I believe it was felt (maybe still is ?) that they are more likely to develop cataracts if their eyes aren't shielded. Of course with some of the coats they can't see unless the hair is up - my girl has that issue and hates her hair up so she is usually walking into something.
so it is ok to trim their eyes? I tried the little pony tail on top and she HATES it ! I love the hair in the eyes but I want her to be safe
growing up we often trimmed the hair in our sheepie's face; and she lived to be 12 or so, with no cataracts.
It's absolutely OK to trim the hair around their eyes and vital if they won't tolerate having it tied up.

I don't know where that old wive's tale came from. One of my first agility trials with Belle was held at a public park meaning it attracted <gasp> the public. Shortly before one of our runs one lady came up and started yelling at me for having tied Belle's hair up. I guess I wasn't my most polite self <ahem> because I rather coldly told her she'd been fed a load of male bovine manure and, well, she didn't take that so well

The one thing you maybe do have to worry about is sun exposure if there isn't a lot of pigment around the eyes. ("eyeliner", if you will) Obviously not a good place to put sunscreen so if you have a pinkish dog that you need to trim, then you'd probably want to try to limit their time spent directly in the sun during the height of summer.

now that makes sense :D She does not have the eyeliner on the one eye so I will be careful. Thank you sooo much for the advice I knew I came to the right place for the answer!!!!!!! :D

do you think that may be where it came from? is the "eyeliner" more common now?
Obe always has a top knot in his hair if he is outside. Inside I sometimes take it out or it falls out. I do leave a thin layer of hair of the eyes for 2 reasons. I like him to look like a sheepie and also to protect the pink around his eyes. He does have the black eye liner both eyes but they are not complete circles. If it is down, "NO" he cannot see.
I part Violet's hair down the middle so that she can see. I have been doing this for so long now, that her hair has been trained to stay parted down the middle.
I have three sheepies at home, the older one "Hamish" is just a pet and he never wears a top knot and has a lot of coat, he vary rearly walks into anything, our Super star "Misty" always has a top knot in her hair and as a gorl doesn't mind too much as long as its a pink rubber, she tries to take out other colors such as blue or black, Zorro is our shooting star and he hates a top knot but he has to wear one as we cant trim him round the eyes as he is shown regulary.

If you keep puting a top knot in their hair they will eventually get used to it and I prefer it to clipping the coat.
Summer waits for her hair to be put up! I say to her you cant eat your dinner, or go for a walk like that...do your hair and she lets me!
Just had our girl Macy to the vet recently and had her hair put up with a
barette. Vet commented how happy he was to see her hair out of her eyes
so she could see properly, and he referred to the old wives tale that some'
people still believe!

My vet said the same thing. The sheepie my mom and dad had always had hair over his eyes. I will have to dig out some old photos and post them. The groomer told my folks the wives tale. Poor Tangham would be shaved down but have bangs :twitch: 8O Poor guy. The very first question I asked when joining this forum was about the hair in the eyes because I didnt want Beauie to look like that. UGH>

How'd you get her to do that. LOL Beau does head stands trying to get the top knot out. I have to put 3 bands in to keep it in.

that is adorable!

My girls hair is just growing back now to the point where I ask myself "do i trim it back again, or let it grow out?" I was for trimming, but Adam wants them to, and I quote, "look like sheepdogs". Its not long enough for the top knot, but is blocking their vision. I tried to use little hair clips, but they keep pulling them away. Any suggestions?

It's not true... it's best to either pull it up out of her eyes or trim it. One exception may be a blind dog (at least in my opinion)... I think the hair can protect the eye or eyes from dirt, etc. I leave the hair over Kaytee's right eye longer because the eye is non-functioning but I check it every couple of days. The other eye allows her to see possible shadows so I keep the hair around that eye trimmed short. http://oesusa.com/index.215.jpg

I trimmed the hair in front of our puppy's eyes a few days after he arrived. http://oesusa.com/EyeHairTrim-PadTrim.jpg They need to be able to see their surroundings and also read the body language of other dogs.

Try tying 2 or 3 smaller pony tails on their heads. Side to side or front to back. Whatever works. I have to do this when mine are growing in from a shave down. And once mine are in full coat I usually need to tie 2-3 front to back as their head coats are too thick for just 1. Most people get a kick out of it & think their hair is in "french braids"! I use the little colored rubber bands you can buy at Sally's. They are strong enough that you can wind them around 3 times to get a good hold & cheap enough that you can snip them when you need to redo their heads.
okay; I tried pinning Luna's hair up today after she walked into the back of a parked car. She's leaving the pins in (Tonks took hers out), but Adam is sure she's very embarassed to look this silly. He's back to wanting me to trimher hair

I think it looks fine. It's cute! You can also use those little dental bands to pull the hair between the eyes into a tiny ponytail and then makes a bigger one above it with the head hair and pull the tiny one into it.

Here's the picture I was looking for of Dawn's daughter's dog, Clay. I did it with Clyde, to but I can't find a picture.

Ilove all the sheepie dos, I think I am going to try the one with multiple bands. :)
Nigel has a top knot (I made the groomer leave his head long when he was clipped down), but the hair in front of his eyes is still growing out. We use another small rubber band and put a smaller ponytail on the bridge of his nose. This is until it grows long enough for the top knot...or joins his face hair. I swear as soon as they come out he runs into everything. I don't want him crashing into Bella while they run in the yard...it could be disasterous.
I keep archies eye hair trimmed - it doesn't stop him walking into things, he isn't blind either his eyesight can be as keen as anything when it suits, the walking into things is just because he is distracted and looking elsewhere
well; Adam hated the clips, and it seemed as soon as he said so, the girls were tearing them out. They were FINE with them, until Adam got home. sigh

So I cut their hair. I'm VERY pleased with the job I did. I bought thinning scissors meant for dogs, and thinned out their bangs so that there is still coverage, but they can see through. Then I cut some heavier chunks from right around their eyes. I'll get a photo of it; its much better than the hack job I did earlier this year.
here is Tonks' cut; still shaggy but you can just see her eyes, and she can see much better!
Image
And Luna's; the angle of the photo shows how from the top, you can hardly tell I cut it!
