Grooming Table advice

My back is killing me. So...

It's time for a grooming table! And who better to ask for advice than you guys!

What size should I get? 42"? Or is that too big?

I would like one with an arm- any advice on that?

Is there anything to help me keep his head down when he is lying on his side? Can I adjust the arm to do that? He keeps putting his head up to "help" me groom  and he tries to hold my arm in his mouth or grab the brush.

UK people- where is the best place to get one? I've seen some new ones on ebay for £80-£120. How much was yours?

I would recommend a table from Petit Amelie as they are very good, my table is 40" x 30" and that is an ideal size for a dog. As far as the arm goes I do not have one or need one as we train ours to lie on the table or stand to be brushed, just a matter of training.

Lots of luck with your search, by the way Kim (oldenglish) has just bought a new one why not contact her, I am sure she will help you.
I'm going to need one as well. I just can't imagine my guys jumping up onto it, but everyone assures me that they will.

Can anyone suggest which one I should get? I'm in the United States.
Usually it's more like they'll put their front paws on and then you hoist them up. I trained Clyde to use the couch as his step so I don't have to lift him.
I guess you can get some steps if you need them too. I am also looking at tables. I think Pet Edge.com has some pretty good prices.
If you want to invest in a really good grooming table, poured laminate non-skid top, handle cut into the table, adjustable legs, then I suggest calling the Wyncrest co. out in the state of Washington.

I ordered one from them & when they came to the shows at the I-X Center in Cleveland, OH they brought it for me so I could save on shipping. I have 2 other grooming tables at home & decided last year that this was my birthday/Christmas present to myself. I am short & trying to trim José on a standard height table was near impossible for me (he's on the bigger side). I use my other ones at home or when I need a 2nd table at the shows for a 2nd dog but this new one goes to all the shows with me & for trimming at home. I got the 44" table. I already had a 48" table at home (my first grooming table) & the 44" table should be plenty big for the largest of OES. José has plenty of room on it & he's a big boy. Just ask Jill!
My old one is big - I think it is 48 inches long. It is old and we have had it for 10 years. Still in great shape too. LeAnne bought half with her babysitting money when we 1st got it!

I got one for LeAnne to have, as we each needed her own. I kept the big one, and got her a real fun pink one from Petedge.com. We ended up swapping this summer, as the pink one is smaller (24" x 36") and lighter weight for me to be hauling to shows this summer. It was super cheap - about $80 (including the arm) and we love it. It is sturdy and has been hauled around and had hard use all summer. The pink one is taller, which LeAnne likes as she is 6 onches taller than me! Floor to tabletop is 32".

I would never be without a grooming table. It makes everything so much easier. I use the arm some when standing, but he lays down well for grooming too. Like dairymaid said, it is all part of the training.

BTW, Chewie doesn't jump up. Actually he did one time this summer and I about died from shock! Our Ollie always leaped up - in fact I couldn't leave the table set up as he used it for a perch anywhere it was.....

I think it depends on the individual dog. I don't allow any of mine to jump up or off. I have these steps http://www.petedge.com/Master-Equipment ... P38403.pro and got as far as teaching them all to use them. But like Jill, I have them use the couch (or the bed) to get on and off because it's safe and convenient. I just don't want to risk injury if they miscalculate or have an off day. In Panda's early days with us, she once tried to jump off... she was fortunate she didn't break by falling on her head but she is NOT the most graceful dog

IF it's for home use and not going to be transported to shows, this one has worked well for me. It's from PetEdge and I've had it about 1 1/2 years now. Textured top and adjustable legs.

Bumble's just not gonna fit on the small size table when he's grown... his dad is 115 pounds 8O. Will an OES that big fit on a 42" table or would 48" be better? I'm thrilled that at 13 weeks this little stinker accepts grooming, nail clipping/filing, pad shaving with a palm clipper extremely well! So far he's been a very easy puppy. :phew:
Thanks for the link, Jaci - this is the one we have - in the pink:

Chewie is still adjusting to the smaller size - he grew up using the bigger one!
the second one doesn't list maximum weights that it is good for. I don't think my girls will get over 75 pounds. thinks these will still be ok?

the other says its good for up to 200 pounds; but doesn't seem to come with that art\m thingie. Anyone think I'll really need that?
We have the 36"x24" one too. I was surprised when it arrived... it was sturdier than I thought it would be. I have to confess that I sometimes use it with my laptop if I want to work in the living room  I really like these tables for the money.

How big is Chewie, Dawn? I'm only used to 65 pound sheepies so am clueless about the next table size to get. I've never even met a male OES until Bumble... and he's a squirt. Is the 42" big enough or should I go with the 48"?

I don't use an arm but of course I'm not a professional either. And the table with adjustable legs doesn't come with one. My OESs will lie on their sides or stand as needed. Though Kaytee and Panda like to hug the front edge when standing and I have to back them up. :?
Most important thing in a grooming table is HEAVY DUTY for a OES fully mature for the table to take the weight. Length also as they are fully grown, fold up ones are great, they can be packed away when you don't need them and when you travel you can take them with you. We have even used it on holidays for a Picnic table :P

A non slip surface on the top is important too and the grooming arm is just a clip on, but make sure the grooming arm has a Quick release clip attached to that as well, really important just in case.

I don't use a grooming arm, mine are trained to lay down or stand when I need to trim feet etc without that.

Here is brie on one of ours.

I also have a trolly on wheels with a crate area underneath with a grooming area at the top that collaspses also for travelling to shows and getting the dogs in and gear when it is wet wet wet :D

Chewie is just under 70 pounds and is 24" at the withers.

If you are debating between the 2 sizes and you are planning on just using it at home and not toting it around, get the 48".

The 48" is so much harder to pack in the car and in crowded grooming areas at shows it is so big!
But for home, I love the extra space. And like others have mentioned, it has gotten used for other purposes too. :D
Cassie,
Asking about how to do high butts, and now grooming tables....is there something you want to tell us? Are you thinking about showing maybe??????

Haha no! But we are planning another sheepie maybe in a year or 18 months and I want to make life as easy as possible :D

I have another question.
Chairs! Do you guys sit at the grooming table? And what do you sit on? I'm guessing the tables are a standard height? I've tried with the dining table but the chairs are so low it's worse for my back and I can't see over my dog
What great timing this post is.

I am getting fed up of chasing Archie around the floor

I did do him on top of his crate (42") at first but I only have access to two sides that made my back ache big time more than the floor as it wasn't high enough. otherwise I may have considered a cage top platform.

I did wonder whether it was worth building my own?

A lot of UK websites and stores just appear to stock the same tables, apart from crofts that is.

:D I like that idea.

Thanks for the information, Dawn. I think we'll go with the 48" this time. Maybe the small plastic cup of treats can actually stay ON the table with the extra space.

hehehe She looks so content :D
I think I have pictures of Chewie on both of mine - for comparison purposes!

The smaller pink one 1st- 24" x 36"

and lastly for handlers-in-training!

The big black one - 48" size -

Not a good picture, but you can see all the extra space behind him anyway.

And one of the pink one being used for"alternate purposes" - grandson Will at his 1st show (outside the womb) at 4 weeks old.

Those pictures are great :D Thanks for posting them.
I know the arm isn't included with the table I'm looking at but how 'bout the adorable baby?

Ahhhhhhh...
So you must first have a grooming table in order to get a baby. :P
IM ALSO IN THE NEED OF A GROOMING TABLE BUT GET SO CONFUSED I KEEP PUTTING IT OFF AND MY BACK CONTINUES TO ACHE. I LIKE THE IDEA OF ADJUSTABLE LEGS AS IM 6'0 TALL AND NOT SURE WHAT THE BEST HEIGHT WOULD BE. I DO WANT A GROOMING ARM AS WHEN I TRY TO BRUSH MY SHEEPIE ON THE PATIO TABLE OUTSIDE SHE WANTS TO LAY DOWN AND LAY ON HER PAWS TO AVOID ME BRUSHING THEM. THEN WHAT SIZE IS CONFUSING TOO. SHE IS 4 AND WEIGHS 70 SO I DONT THINK SHE WILL REALLY GET MUCH BIGGER. I DONT NEED THE TOP OF THE LINE ALTHOUGH I DONT WANT A CHEAP ONE EITHER. IM NOT A PROFESSINAL GROOMER I JUST WANT TO KEEP MY LUCY THAT IS IN FULL COAT DETANGLED AND MAT FREE. I BRUSH HER ABOUT 3 TIMES A WEEK ON THE FLOOR SINCE IT'S GETTING COLDER OUTSIDE. I WISH THERE WAS A STORE THAT CARRIED THE DIFFERENT STYLES TO SEE THEM AND TO COMPARE IN PERSON. IM IN OHIO AND THERE ISNT. I LOOKED ON PETSEDGE AND THE PRICES ARE OK, IM JUST NOT SURE OF WHAT SIZE. I THINK THE 48 IS WAY TOO BIG BUT AFRAID THE 36 MAY BE TOO SMALL. IM THINKING A 40 BUT GETTING A HEADACHE DOING SO.
I have two dogs and a bitch and my table is 40" x 30" which is large enough in my opinion, I am thinking of buying a new table later this year as mine is showing the signs of wear and tear from showing. :D
bgn - did you ever decide on a table?
Hopefully she did. This is the thread I read when searching for grooming tables as well, and didn't find one that fit what I was looking for.
I decided to stick with using the dining table for now  I think what I really need is an arm, my problem is Ru just won't keep his head down when he's on his side, despite all our efforts to train him to stay still. Which means I need Greg to hold his neck. Which means Greg gets bored and I have a grumpy boyfriend twice a week until I feed him tea and cookies :(
have you tried just gently putting your hand on his head? he may be fighting the extra pressure on his neck. there is also a pressure point on the shoulder that keeps them down easily.

I sit on the floor with mine and have beee known to put my foot on a wayward head and use the stay command - it must be working cause I was doing Marley's feet the other night and had to leave the room to get the clippers. I said stay twice and came back to her still on her side with her head down - I was so happy (she HATES her feet being touched and I expected to find her hiding in the next room)
I don't think he's fighting it because he will stay there a few seconds, but then wants to watch what I'm doing, then decides he can do it better and tries to 'help' me. It's not like he's hating it, he just won't stay still. Typical Leo
