Boxing/batting at each other

Phoebe and our new dog, Winston, box/bat each other with their paws.
Phoebe, the older dog, seems to start things by sitting directly in front of Winston and tapping him on the shoulder with her paw. She sits up very, very tall. He'll sniff her head and bat her back. At one point, she had one paw on his shoulder, the other paw on his head and was standing up over him. This will go on for a while until one has enough and growls at the other one.
Is this playing, sorting out who's dominant?

No it is not "domenence" this is just playing. I have three dogs and they play like this all of the time. :D

Thanks, Violet. They seem quite happy while they are doing this but since we've not had 2 OES together, I wondered.
Jackson and my cat do this. I just thought that my cat taught her to play by batting at things.........
Tonks does it ALOT, and her sister Luna never used to... but she's caught on to Tonks' ways.
Charlie and Libby do it all the time! There's also a lot of noise going along with it that sounds like Chewie from Star Wars! Charlie's the worst at it (or best depending on how you look at it). It's really funny to watch.
It's the "Sheepie-slap"!!!!
Normal and just playing, rough housing I call it, having a sheepie good time.
Funny - that's how our cats play with Archies face!
My sheepie stands on the bed and does it to me! I think it is funny my boyfriend does not :(
All three of my dogs do that. Its pretty cute. They also nip each others mouths while they rolling around on the floor. They sound like a herd of elephants!
I look at all your BEAUTIFUL SHEEPIES and none of them have the big stain that mine does on her chin!!!!! Is there anything I can do? I feel she drools more than normal. Her breath is outrageous! She is a puppy and her breath smells wicked anyone know why? She does not eat her own poo or anything just her dog food which is Pro plan. The chin just makes her look soooo dirty........... help please!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd love to know the answer to that, too. I wipe Phoebe's face regularly and wash it, too but the stains are getting worse.
Reading the stories of the cat/sheepies play batting reminded me of when we first brought Violet home at 9 mts from a Rescue. At the time we only had Pearl our cat who was 8 yrs old. Pearl would lay on the couch and Violet would stand in front of her and they would bat at each other for the longest time. Yes, at first I did think that Pearl was trying to teach Violet how to be a "cat". Now that we have added two Aussies to the family, I now know that it is their way of playing...also biting ears and jowels. They are a joy to watch "in play."

One other comment about how animals pick up habits of their other family members....when we brought China, our first Aussie, home at 8 wks, Violet was 14 mts and China imitated the "sheepie"run. China's Breeder could not believe seeing her Aussie running like a sheepie. China now runs like an Aussie, but she was so cute to watch when she was so small.

Check her for Tartar build up. Our OES was a rescue at 15 months and had a serious tartar build up and nasty breath. Got her teeth cleaned and its all good now.

Mustangricky
Both of our sheepies do the batting paw thing. Especially Sophie. She'll even get up on the sofa and bat at Cheyenne and Beauford. She likes being bigger than them. :D::D Although she is about an inch shorter than Beauford already at 6 mo. I cant believe how fast she grew. Kinda miss the baby size. But I dont miss the poo.
