A cure for an itchy dog? Temeril-P

Hi everyone,

Mulligan here.

As you may recall, I developed a case of the itchies right after my dad shaved me down. This started in May if I recall correctly, and it went away after about a month or so. Well about 2 or 3 weeks ago it started again.

I don't really know where to scratch. I am itchy everywhere; left side, right side, sides of face, top of head, shoulders, and I'm biting at my legs and I try to contort myself to bite at the hair along the top of my back.

Mom and dad look at me with such pity in their eyes. They're tried everything they know; they give me baths in oatmeal and that seems to work sometimes but not this time, they give me Benedryl (dyphenhydramine) and that makes me feel lousy, but still itchy. They've been giving me lots of fish oil (which I love!) but I'm still itchy.

Yesterday Mommy took me to see the vet (They love me there, naturally) and the vet put me on a short course of Temeril-P. The itching stopped by morning. Completely. Not a scratch out of me!

Temeril-P is a combination of trimeprazine (an antihistamine) and Prednisolone (a steroid). It is made by Pfizer.

I know soooooo many of us have had itchies issues that I thought I would post this right away and see if anyone else has had expeience with Temeril-P.

I am on day 2 of a 12 day course. I'll keep you posted.

Lots of love,
Scratch-free Mulligan.

Mulligan, I am so happy for you!!
:D :D :D :D

Thankfully I don't need it, but I am glad your vet was smart and thought of this!

Chewie
Is it a lower dose of Prednisone in combination with the antihistamine? I'm assuming this is more favorable because it's less steroids for the dog but the antihistamine kind of fills in for the extra steroid? Or I'm way off completely?

I skipped that day in dog veterinary school.

Your friend,
Clyde
Ron here. :D

I am unfamiliar with the antihistamine, but the prednisolone is 2mg (equivalent to the same 2mg of prednisone) per tablet.

The dosing schedule is as follows:
3 pills 2x a day for 4 days (12mg prednisone/day)
3 pills 1x a day for 4 days (6mg prednisone/day)
1.5 pills 1x a day for 4 days. (3mg prednisone/day)

So in addition to perhaps reducing any inflammation the prednisone might be giving a feeling of well-being and a little metabolic lift to counter the effects of the antihistamine.

I wasn't there at the vets to ask these questions.

I also had the impression that the scratching might have been partly self-perpetuating (once it starts then the skin gets inflamed causing more itching and more scratching) and/or partly habitual. So perhaps this may also help break those cycles if they exist.
Mulligan we hope what daddy and mommy are popping in your mouth helps break the itchies, we know you have been scratching for awhile so we are all keeping fingers and paws crossed this new thingy will help either stop it or break the cycle.

Brie says she wishes she could give you a sheepie hug and to growl at you to stop scratching. :P

No itch No itch No itch, we are cheering for you to stop & hoping this new stuff will help  . :cheer: :cheer:
Thanks for the info Rn. Tasker has started his "fall itchies". We se the vet on Tuesday, I'll ask!!!!!!!!!!!!
hey my duffy has been going through the same thing .. they put him on anti bioic for 21 days and predizone well he is off the pred and still not intching but only has 3 more days of the antiboic still no itching so scared to see what happens once he is off his meds.. good luck
We looked into this one recently too... please let me know if/when the symptoms return after it's stopped. Lord knows I don't want to use steroids but we're almost out of all options. :(

We also discussed cyclosporine and prednisone... I wish we could try Doxipen... a good friend has had great results with this human antidepressant... but Darby receives thyroid meds so that one isn't an option.

She already receives two shots per month... one for molds and one for dust mites. We're attempting to do one more allergy test here... a dermal test for ragweed, nettle and chenopods... to see if these three pollens might be causing Darby's allergy problems from late August through freezing weather. I've tracked Pollen.com and the symptoms appeared within about 2 weeks of these three pollens showing up locally. We'll follow up with the vet this week.

It would be nice if we could reduce her response by adjusting the serums she already gets. But it's got to be a balance between keeping a dog as healthy as possible but also allowing him/her to enjoy life. This time of year we can't let Darby out to run and play much. :(
ooh, I feel your pain (or itchies) Mulligan! My mom gave me prednisone and a round of antibiotics. I just finished the antibiotics on Friday and my skin looks much better. I'm on something they're calling a taper with the steroids. I was on 2 tabs a day for 5 days, then one a day for 5 days, and now I'm on 1 every other day for the foreseeable future. I feel SO much better!

Good luck with the medicine!

Ditto. Good to know. If Yuki starts back up, we'll try it.
Bella is on Atarax twice a day and Chlorpheniramine, two tablets, twice a day. She was so itchy when I got her last November. The food change (lamb and rice diet only) and these pills seem to work. They are both antihistimines (sp) I believe. I think she will be on them forever though.

At least no more itching!!!! :clappurple:
We're using Atarax (hydroxyzine) too and it seems to be helping the most this year but Darby is still so itchy certain times of the day... like 3-4am for one. She had one area on her neck that she made bleed by scratching so hard but with topicals only it's scabbed over and almost healed. This time of year, we can't leave the house without her so she goes everywhere with us. She is an unbelievably good sport about the things we need to do- the shirts, ecollar, socks with tape, boots every time she goes outdoors, baths and drying, pills, sprays, shots, etc. Never is she grumpy about any of it...
The Atarax alone doesn't seem to be enough for Bella. She also needs the Chlorpheniramine. The cocktail of the two seems to do the trick here. If I pull her off the second one she starts to scratch again. She had bumps all over her skin before we started this and put her on the lamb and rice limited ingredient diet from Natural Balance. She seems to have a chicken allergy too.

I hope you find relief for your girl. I know it's maddening to watch them scratch and not know how to fix it.

She also needs the Chlorpheniramine.

I also have that one in the doggie med drawer
It was prescribed for Darby last year but we went to the holistic vet instead... he retired in January :(

Darby got two little bumps on her head late in the season last year... like
hives. Otherwise, her skin gets itchy and hot. We spray her down with a
water and Ox-E drop solution by Nzymes which I think helps to prevent
infections. It seems to sooth the itch but is kind of a drag to do at 3-4am

Panda had been put on a cocktail of 3 antihistamines (the two you
mentioned along with diphenhydramine)... with her, we found out
on our own it was actually yeast causing the problem so didn't use
more than one day's worth of the meds.

Gotta have another consult with the vet... thanks for sharing this with me, Wendy.
Hey, no problem. I can't stand to watch them scratch so much. What works for Bella can't work for them all. I hope you find a working treatment for Darby soon. Both of mine still get a bit of flaky skin on their backs when they are due for a bath. Give her a squeeze for me.
So glad Mulligan and family are finding relief.

Personally, I cannot quite imagine giving a sheepdog an oatmeal bath.....

Just curious: is there more itching after shaving? Is there a connection?

I know!!! The hardest part is getting the ratio of the sugar and the cream just right.

Just kidding! Actually it is an oatmeal based shampoo. 8)

I dunno. Maybe it irritated the skin and started a cycle, but it has happened a few tmes now.
