Could Baloo be pouting?

I have a question everyone..... (Like that's anything new for me?! )

"what's wrong woth Baloo?"

Now that we have moved into the new house Baloo has begun acting rather..... pouty. The first couple of days he was excited, running around, playing all his usual stuff-- nothing different than any other time for him.
Then I began to notice that he was acting a little mopey.

My husbands theory is that he is just pouting about the change. The first few days Baloo got to go back and forth from the old house to this new one as we moved all our stuff.... but now that we are done moving and have been just here at the new house he's acting this way.

I am worried because he is usually just not this "sad". The backyard is lots bigger than our old one and he spent a lot of time investigating and prowling around in the flowers and bushes and stuff the past owner planted... could he have gotten into a plant that he shouldn't have??

Here's why Hubby says we should NOT worry just yet:
~Baloo eats fine, drinks fine (allbeit out of the potty- not his bowl)
~Baloo plays when someone is in the yard with him and his toys. Runs around, chases kids, etc.
~ He has no sign of upset tummy, no bowl issues, no coughing, no hiccups, no breathing probs.

and why I AM worried:
* I have cought him eating grass--- often.
* He sits at the gate and stares out at the nieghborhood. just sits there-- staring. Even with me out there with him. At old house he would follow me around, sit on the patio furniture with me, etc. Not now. (if kids come out he will play with them)
* Like mentioned before-- he was into all the plants/flowers... did he eat something bad?
* He hates these new hardwood floors. (Had carpet before)
* When in the house he just finds a spot and lays down. No following me, no running around like always before.
He had a vet check on Thursday and the only thing the vet said was that one of his ears looks like it's not as clean as before, so I have to pay more attention to it when cleaning. Otherwise says... Baloo seems fine to her.

Could Baloo just have the blues?

Should I stop worrying?

when i moved my 2 girls up to cocoa it had 4 acres i though they would love it .. the first 2 weeks my daytona the brat refused to go and enjoy the land.. she wanted to go back to boca .. the first nite she stood in front of all of use in the living room and pee right there to show us .. it did take a few weeks.. fast forward 3 years later she loved the house and pond and learned how to be a dog and run after anything that came in her yard.. give him time
I don't believe dogs "pout", they are aware of change and can be bothered by it. He will adjust, give him time and extra love pats.
We. also, recently moved. We had 'moving" issues with Violet...she is 5 1/2 yrs old and started going potty in the house. We installed the doggy door as soon as we moved and took all three dogs out regularly to go potty so they would get the hang of it. Violet just stopped going in the house this week. We did what was advised on this Forum to go back to retraining. All three dogs are now kept in our bedroom at night and not allowed the run of the house like they did in the other one.

What Bloo is going through is an adjustment period. He had kids in the neighborhood he was used to playing with and dogs he was used to chatting to. Violet is in the same boat...she had a much larger yard and loved to lay out under the Palm Trees and Banana Trees all day and just peek through the privacy fence and chat with the other dogs on two sides of us. Violet still has Asia/China here with her, but has had a more diffecult time adjusting to the new house. The Aussies on the other hand adjusted a little quicker. One thing I have noticed about Violet is that she is a dog who loves a routine.

Good luck in your new home! Everything usually works out with time.
First ID all the plants in your yard and cross reference with a poisonous plants list easily found on the web. If he's been eating grass, yes maybe he nibbled elsewhere. Hopefully there aren't some residual chemicals on the plants, lawn or around the foundation.

Yes, eating grass is a sign of stress.......or he's been hanging with MO who eats grass several times a day. Often it stays down and shows up at the end....sometimes it returns out the front port. This has been going on for 8 years so I try not to worry about it anymore.

Yes, the floor issue has some bearing, he's uncertain. Keep the nails short and place non slippy rugs at dangerous intersections. In time the "Flying Sheepdog" will learn.

Introduce him to the neighborhood by regular walks, sit with him as he watches the neighborhood. Maybe there isn't as much going on as before and he's bored. Is there a school bus that stops, learn the schedule and allow him to watch.

Maybe come up with some new games for the back yard....make a moutain or platform and teach him about it. Actually just playing with him will help a lot.

Dogs are territorial........and he's been rudely transplanted. In time he'll claim this new spot.
I'd worry about the plants in the yard. Maybe take him in for a vet check but also identify all the flowers/plants in your new yard. Here is a list of some toxic plants- http://www.aspca.org/site/PageServer?pa ... oxicplants

I remember when Emma and Darby were scheduled to arrive... my husband and I chopped down two yews because they're poisonous (it was late January in Michigan.. brrrrr ).

Susan and I are thinking the same thing but she types faster
Also look for mushrooms... they too can be poisonous.

Hoping it's just the doggie blues from being relocated.
Be meticulous about keeping the hair between the pads very short and the nails trimmed. The longer hair is makes it harder to walk on wood and tile floors.
Baloo is probably just adapting to a huge change, unless you have any toxic plants in the new garden , I wouldn't worry, just maybe pay him a little more fuss until he returns back to his old ways.
Thanks for the replies, everyone.

I am hoping it's just getting used to the new place as well. He is getting lots and lots of love and pats, that's for sure!
Maybe with all us home over the holiday weekend he will perk up. We'll go one several walks and see the sights, as well.

I looked at the list of poisonous plants... Wow. I have to spend part of the weekend looking up all the plants in the yard. I only (truely) know what some are... others I have seen at this place or that but don't actually know names.

Thanks again, guys!
Slow fingers Jaci was right on about mushrooms. Doggies are dieing from eating them. Inspect the yard daily.

I still think the Flying Baloo is just being a spoiled baby, "I wanna go home."

But don't listen to me, I thought Glacier was having arthritis flair up or tooth problems....it was a bladder infection. Dang I wish these guys could talk.
Unfortunately, we had firsthand experience with mushrooms about 4 1/2 years ago. Emma had to stay overnight with the vet because she was a very sick pup. (But there was vomiting and diarrhea along with depression.) I searched the yard and found only one mushroom but it had a bite out of it. It was hidden in the bushes and she had grabbed a mouthful of leaves/grass along with a bit of mushroom. :( http://oesusa.com/TheMushroom.jpg

There are certain times of the year that we go outside every morning and "harvest" the mushrooms that have come up overnight... we keep an eye out though from spring to fall.
SUNDAY MORNING Baloo Update ~

8O Well, after getting no sleep last night 'cuz of my concern for Baloo-- we broke down and called the vet super early this morning (sorry Vet, for waking you up!) and took Baloo in to be looked at. As fur-mom's sometimes we just know when things are not right... and I just had this feeling something was just not right. (could have something to do with the snot from his nose  )

When I thought I heard Baloo coughing/breathing funny this morning  I decided ENOUGH... I can't take it any more! I need to know, Baloo needs to feel better, I AM CALLING!! (hubby was hoping it could wait till after the holiday weekend so we wouldn't have to pay the extra fees... but I was not waiting any more!!)

To make a long story short.... Baloo has an upper respiratory infection and a slight fever. His lungs sound perfect- so no x-rays were done, but he has some Metacam and Clindamycin to take for a while, and we need to make sure he drinks plenty. he has not changed his eating at all so they were not worried about that... but I am going to watch him close just to be safe.
I am DEFINATELY going to still search the yard for all plants we may need to get rid of and look for mushrooms as well. I would rather be cautious than sorry later on.

Thanks for all the advice, guys. I know I always look at the site for answers to my sheepie questions-- you guys are a great source of info!!
And I agree-- would be soooooo much easier if they could just tell us what's wrong when we ask them. They need to talk!!
 For Baloo it was a URI, for Glacier a UTI.......we are just terrible Mommies........

Hope Baloo gets rid of his sniffles soon. A summer cold, yeah they are the worst.
