Andy Has An Enlarged Liver.

Ok....so my old guy, Andy, (cocker) had x-ray's taken today because he has had some health issues lately. He went in for a blood draw on Wednesday and the lab report showed his liver enzymes are elevated so the vet wanted to do an x-ray. Sure enough...his liver is enlarged. He's 14 and we have the option of doing an ultra-sound...which is $400.00. Good news is that his heart looks good and his lungs are clear. She prescribed him some "denosyl". Hopefully this will make his liver function better....won't make it smaller, but maybe it will help him out. He also has been diagnosed with "Doggy Dimentia" or "Doggy Ahlzeimers". He has started to pace alot at night and scratch at the side of the bed like he wants something (not normal for this old guy). He has his days and night mixed up and just can't settle. He has been on Selegiline for 3 days now and seems to be resting a little more and not so nervous. The other morning (2:30 a.m.) I'm laying next to him on the floor giving him a belly rub because he couldn't sleep.

So tonight, hubby and I are going to sit down and talk about where to go from here. "if" we do the ultasound...no matter what we find...at his age, we won't put him through any further tests or treatments (ie surgery or chemo)...his old body just couldn't handle it I'm afraid. We don't want him to suffer....but I don't feel he's ready to make his journey to Rainbow Bridge yet either. He still enjoys his daily walks...and still loves to eat....he's kinda picky, but still enjoys his food. Guess all we can do now is take one day at a time and keep him as comfortable as possible for now. I don't like having that all too familiar feeling of what may lay ahead for us.

Selegiline hydrochloride (Anipryl) usually takes at least a month to show any dramatic improvement in cognitive function. It helped make our Maggie McGee IV's last six months bearable but some here have reported little or no improvement. I hope Andy does well on it.

Most of us here know exactly what you're going through right now. Seeing our older pets health deteriorate and knowing what's ahead is heartwrenching. Gentle hugs to your sweet Andy. :hearts:
So sorry to hear about Andy. We went through something similar with our cocker 2 years ago. Unfortunately, there is little modern veterinary medicine can do to stop the problems our beloved pets experience as they grow older.

I hope these comfort measures make Andy's remaining time better for both him and you .

Yeah, unfortunately, my Lucy was one of those who didn't see much, if any, improvement from the selegline. She was at the point where she didn't recognize us anymore most of the time and she'd get "lost" in the house a lot and wind up getting scared and falling down. It was heartbreaking. I know what you're going through with your boy and I hope he responds well to the selegline and also that his prognosis is positive with his liver problem.
No words of advice but good luck, I hope Andy gets some relief with the meds :ghug:
I don't have advice but I am sending positive thoughts your way. :ghug:
White Sheepie light from Bella and Nigel sent to Andy. We are all praying it gets easier for him.
About the enlarged liver...

There are many things it can be. Our boy, Portage has an enlarged liver and higher numbers on tests. We found out, during an unrelated emergency surgery, that his liver was very large and gnarled looking.

The vet (young and fairly new) didn't know what it was. She thought maybe cancer, but we decided to go through with the emergency surgery anyway, and let the chips fall where they may. Two weeks later the biopsy came back completely benign.

That was nearly two years ago.

"Old dog liver" or nodular hyperplasia isn't uncommon in older dogs. Our Portage is still going strong and is just fine. I've heard that many times dogs have it and you never even hear about it.

His liver enzyme level (I don't remember exactly which one) was not supposed to exceed 200. He was over 1200 during surgery and directly after. After some interim pills (not even long term, just during the crisis) the numbers fell to 360 or so. Now it has crept up to just over four hundred, but the vet says it's still functioning quite well. And he says the liver can still function like this for a long time.

So, while I can't tell you anything comforting exactly, I just wanted to let you know that there are some benign causes of an enlarged liver. Now Portage doesn't take any liver meds, but we know to avoid any other medications that may be hard on his liver. He's doing great.

Portage and I will keep you both in our thoughts. All the best to you both. And, we send some hugs too!
sending good thoughts your way. hope the meds work for your old guy.
Gentle :ghug: to Andy.
No advice just warm thoughts and gentle hugs being sent your way.....
