New Orleans vs Las Vegas

Hubby and I are taking our first short trip away from the toddler. The two thoughts are New Orleans or Las Vegas. I haven't been to either, my husband has been to both.
If we go to Vegas I would like to stay somewhere on the strip.
If we go to New Orleans I was thinking a bed and breakfast in the French Quarter.
If you would share any advice/experiences of either of these places I would appreciate it.
We are thinking of going the 3rd weekend in October.
thanks,
Doreen

VEGAS, of course! If you haven't been there, it's definitely worth the experience. There's so much to do, see and eat and you definitely have to see a Cirque show there-- they're amazing! We usually go at least twice a year and never get bored but, then again, we're poker players, too and that takes up a lot of time!

I love New Orleans, too, though, for completely different reasons. We had a very low key touristy trip and did a couple of the late night tours where they encourage you to bring adult beverages during the walking tours. After a couple of drinks, the tour gets a lot better too! We walked around, looking at all the different parts of the architecture and trying local food at stands. We creeped around at night in the cemeteries, which was neat, too. One of the best floor shows that we ever experienced was in a greasy little dinner in the French Quarter where there were two queens running the place and they kept a fun banter going the whole time they were cooking and serving. They really made for a good time!

You'll have a great time in either place no matter what. I think it all depends what you're in the mood to do.

The Clover Grill. Amazing pecan waffles and entertainment, 24 hours a day. I love that place.

New Orleans and Las Vegas are two of the best weekend getaway cities. Key West is also in the top three but a little harder to get to. As Jill mentions, both are excellent in their own way. Vegas is big and splashy and totally high energy - amazing restaurants, shows, shopping. You can spend a day just looking at all of the hotels and people watching. I agree that you should stay on the Strip, that way you'll be able to see everything easily. You definitely don't want a rental car in Vegas, traffic is terrible and you can do a lot of walking. The weather will be great in October. I'll be there the weekend of 10/25 to see Jimmy Buffet at the MGM Grand.

New Orleans is a more laid back weekend - beautiful architecture on the French Quarter, wandering down Bourbon Street checking out the live music acts in all of the little bars, eating wonderful Cajun food, shopping at the French Market, river boat trip on the Mississippi, seeing the Aquarium of the Americas. There are great little art galleries and antique shops (along with the tacky t shirt shops). We've always stayed at a small hotel called Le Richelieu on the south side of the French Quarter near the French Market.

Either way you'll have a great time!
Vegas...baby!!!!!!! I love Vegas!!!! The over- the- top hotels, the great weather, the 'beautiful' people, the shows, the food and of course the gambling!!! Anytime of the day or night..Vegas never closes!!!!

I agree..NO car rentals, just watching people driving AND walking the strip is nerve wracking but so fun! so put your walking shoe on and go with the crowd!!!

We always stay at the top of the strip ----we like the Luxor (very quiet and subdued)...the Exclibur (Knights of the Round Table themed-- very fun)..Mandalay Bay (top notch and kind of elegant---decor' is beautiful). We are going in October for our anniversary and may stay at the Bellagio or Paris. (I can't wait!!!)

But, where ever you go, I'm sure you will have a ball!!!!
VEGAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Vegas. Very over the top......if that bothers you, then go south. You might want to check out the shows in Vegas before you go (and maybe reserve tickets ahead)...http://www.vegas.com is one site. Ditto, no car unless you want to go out hiking in the nearby areas but then you could rent for the day. Gambling is optional in Vegas......there's just too much else to do. Do some research.

October is good time for NO. However, the French Quarter is a bit too "old" for me......yes the architecture was exciting, but the sewage popping up wasn't. When I commented on it to family who lived there, they shrugged and said, "Yeah, it happens." Neat shops.
i say new orleans....i dont think you can break your nose there
Vegas is fun - we have been a couple of times. If you want to see any shows, I would try to book tickets as soon as possible. We have had front row to Cirque's O and 4th row to Phantom of the Opera because I was able to purchase early and they were awesome. Also, if you go to Vegas - go up in the Eifle tower at night and watch the water show at the Belliago - very cool - also go the the patio lounge at the Wynn and watch the water show there - one of the coolest things I have ever seen. The drinks are a little pricy - but they are yummy and worth the show. Have fun!
