UK Memebers - did anyone watch the BBC documentry??

BBC 1, Tuesday 19th Aug evening,
Anyone watch the documentry about pedigree dogs, inbreeding, kennel club, eugenics etc....

How amazing were those pictures of the original breeds?!?

Would like to hear everyone's veiws on this, it did make me stop and think...and make me pleased / proud of my 'Mutt' OES cross!

Amazing, I never knew the kennel club came from the eugenics!!

I'm not in the UK but have heard some reviews about this show from the ethical OES breeders in the UK. I understand that they really put a spin on the show against pedigree dogs. The boxer used in the show was purposefully not given its medications so that it would go into a seizure.

There is an OES breeder that was invited to speak out about the documentary tonight on the Richard Bacon Show and explain that there are reputable breeders out there.
What was the show about?I would love to hear more about this subject :!: :!:
I watched it and never realised before how mutated the pedigree dogs were. When they showed photos of some of the breeds from the 1800s there was no similarity. Particularly the dachshunds and the basset hounds. Also the pugs, the way they couldn't breath, it was not nice to watch and really made me think. They showed one or 2 oes but only in relation to their coats, no comment on the breed. Also the GSD the way their hind legs slope, which causes knee problems.
This has just been shown in scotland tonight. I watched this with great interest. How different these dogs are today compared to yesteryear. (imho i think most of these dogs looked better then than they do now.) Yet the kennel club has put up a statement on there website about the program.
I think what shocked me was the ridgeback breeders. The lady who said that killing puppies who didn't have the ridge was acceptable is shocking. Especially as the ridge is a defect which is being bred in.

However I suppose every breed has something which isn't acceptable to all!
Those ridge backs were not nice to look at, form of spina bifida they said! I think they should be thinking about what they are doing!
I'm pleased it was shown even though it was a bit bias, at least some people might research breeders a bit more, I work at a vets and the amount of people that come in with dogs and for some reason presume if a puppy has KC papers it is going to be in the best of health, being KC registered doesn't mean much really, the breeders aren't inspected or anything like that, which seems to be the impression some of the general public have.

It was amazing seeing how the dogs used to look! The same must go for cats too though, look at how some persians have beathing and eye problems.

I hae since had a lengthy letter from the KC describing how they feel the show was unfair, how 90% of pedigree dogs are healthy etc... it obviously ticked them off!! I got the letteras my dog is registered, I guess all registered has had a letter.

I was very proud of my cross breed rescue while I was watching the show, the health side was part of the appeal for me in getting a cross.

I agree the the ridgebacks breeder didn't mdo herself any favours with her statment and wasn't she some sort of club leader? Why couldn't they just neuter and sell as crosses instead of PTS! :(
