Our 4yr old sheepie bit a neighbor's dog tonight

Tonight we were out walking our 4 yr old female sheepie when we came upon our neighbor (pretty good friend) who was walking his older pekinese. Our sheepie likes passive dogs and puppies but does not like dogs that send off a mean message or dogs that want to be dominent. She needs to be alpha. I suggested tonight when we met in the street to walk them together in the same direction. I had seen Cesar (The Dog Whisperer) suggest this on tv as it makes them feel like they are in the same pack. About every 10 feet our sheepie would try and lunge at the pekinese. We were almost done and our sheepie got too close to the pekinese and they had a scuffle. The pekinese came out with a bloody ear. I feel so bad. We apologized profusely and offered to pay any vet bills. We got home and called them and they said that a small chunk was taken out and they were trying to get it to stop bleeding. I guess I feel frustrated because she absolutely loves people...will lick them to death. These people think we have the meanest dog on the planet. I guess my question is this....is 4 1/2 years old too late for dog training? Has anyone heard of walking dogs in the same direction to get along? Well it certainly did not work for us tonight.

In the right circumstances it can indeed work - we used the parrallel walk to introduce Marley and the Newfie puppy and it went well. however now you know why cesar has so many warnings about professionals only on his show. your dog isn't too old to be trained - you just need a good trainer to help. in the meantime the lunging should have told you the dogs weren't ready for this yet.

hope the smaller dog is all right.
I will follow up tomorrow on the neighbor's dog. In the mean time I am still a little mad at my own sheepie. She is such a sweet dog to her family...but a terror of the neighborhood. I might look into "older" dog training.
Wow, how could you stay mad at that darling face!

I think it is important to own and use a muzzle when you have a dog that you know may bite - even in the very best situations.

The fact of the matter is that had your girl truly been ferocious about the Peke, the Peke would have ended up with punctured lungs and broken ribs - in the very best situation.

Pay the vet bills, console your friend and her Peke and chalk it up to a lesson well learned, by you.

Good luck with Peke and your darling girl, too.
Yes, pay the vet bill and any further walking will be done with a muzzle! Consult a dog trainer and prepare for some intensive training for you and the dog.

Could be your sheepie will have to spend her life away from other dogs which will limit your interaction with other dog owners for awhile. Don't limit your friend by stopping walks, she still needs her exercise.
