Retirement! Where should we move?

We are looking at other places in which to retire to. We have it narrowed down to Utah, Pennsylvania, Prescott, AZ or Somewhere in upstate NY. Any suggestions?

i happen to LOVE Upstate NY. BUT its going to be a big change from Arizona. If you've never driven in a snow storm or shovelled out a drive way, your retirement years might not be the best time to start.

Of course; you could hire a plow service and just stay in when it snows. :)

Upstate NY may be a bit tough on you. My mom and stepfather have lived near Syracuse ( 1/2 half hour south of ) for many years. It's beautiful country but tough in the winter. Same with taxes. Check those out before you buy anything. Pen. may be a bit cheaper, but in most parts of the state winters are tough.
We live 40 minutes from Asheville and 20 miles from the Tennessee border...we are surrounded by the Smokey Mts and mountains to the south....Waynesville is BEAUTIFUL...we have snow maybe 3 times a winter and it melts the next day. Summer the avg temperature is 55-75 here in the mts....we actually stay around 75 when it's high 90s in Asheville or anywhere else...summer is WONDERFUL!!! Fall is also beautiful and great weather 50-70s until late November...lots of sunshine and the fall leaves are beautiful as well as all the fall festivals everywhere. January and February are coldest...20-50's and a little snow but doesn't last and that's mainly if you live in high elevations. Spring is beautiful...40s-60s. We have lived here for 2 years from Charleston SC...love it...people in the mountains are very warm, simple and loving, you get such beautiful land for the $$$$...lots of land and so much to do within an hour or two...between Tennessee, North Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina. Something going on close every weekend!
How about RI? Lots of things to do Newport Folk festival,
Newport Jazz festival, Fools rules regatta **.

Jamestown is beautiful, it is on Conanicut island across from
Newport. It is connected to the mainland by 2 bridges.

If you want privacy here is an interesting property==bring
your own motor boat.

Good luck with the search and congrats on retirement :D :D
You're thinking of moving from Phoenix, AZ to Pennsylvania? I'm a born and bred Pennsylvanian, but I still have to ask - Why? Do you have family here? Are you originally from here? Most people from PA retire TO Phoenix!

I'll third that! I have year round allergies ( not to puppys thank god ), and Phoenix is great for them. Been to Arizona quite a few times and I love it out there.

Upstate NY and Pa are both beautiful, but WHY would you want to retire there? 8O
I like the sound of waynesville:) I will have to google your town it sounds lovely!!
I can understand getting out of the valley due to the traffic, congestion and all, but I wouldn't be looking at a super cold region to retire unless family was the issue. Winter heating costs are outrageous unless you build and use geothermal. Taxes are much higher as well. Never think you know an area until you've seen it at its worst season.

If you grew up in an area but have been gone for decades, memories play funny tricks. What wasn't so bad in your youth becomes intolerable in our advancing years.

Speaking of worst, how about mid to late winter in the SLC valley?. Talk about fog and air inversions! cough, cough Remember one year the sun was not visible for not a month, but closer to two due to fog and smog, just gruesome.

You are already familiar with Prescott and maybe over the hill into the Verde Valley.

Alas, retirement one has to consider nearby medical facilities as well as major medical facilities plus transportation for the time you won't be able to drive. Know two cases of people with compromised health or mid 70's who retired to "rural" areas and now face huge transportation prices due to gas and the increasing need to go to the doctors. One has gone to rural Wyo where the major medical hospital is nearly 3 hour drive over some nasty mtn roads.

So I wish you happy looking but do be reasonable. Your needs are changing.
We are tired of the heat, and long for the seasons. The cold may be an issue, so maybe upstate NY isn't for us. Any other suggestions? How about Washington State? I understand it rains, but I can live with that?
We are in California and while it is our home state, we are thinking of spending our retirement years in the Portland Oregon area. I would like a cooler climate and spend my retirement years doing what I would enjoy doing... I understand wanting to change climates, but how about a minor change rather than such a major one, the arid desert to snow country is pretty major... I thought that there as an area in Arizona that is cooler, Tempe....?

Kentucky! It is a beautiful commonwealth, weather is a bit hot in the summer, but you would be use to that. The taxes are not bad, housing very affordable, many retirement communities; we have lakes, the Ohio River, beautiful mountains, farmland and hollows, and, of course, the grandaddy of them all, the Kentucky Derby! There is a lot of 18th and 19th century history, too. My Old Kentucky Home where the sun shines bright is calling you -
I know alot of folks are moving to North Carolina right now, especially the Ashville, and Charlotte areas. Mild winters and manageable summers. And an easy drive to mountains, or the ocean; whichever sounds nice to you.

That's where I have in mind after I finish my PhD. No more winters for me, thank you!
I love Prescott. I'd really like to buy a summer house up there but haven't been able to swing it yet. I've also heard a lot of great things about North Carolina.
We are amazed out how many "halfbacks" are here in the mountains...they left the north and went to Florida...too hot and hurricanes and now they are here in the mountains...Out of the 12 neighbors 9 are from Florida and they love it. Very low humidity and yes, Myrtle Beach and Hilton Head are about 5 hours. We still love visiting back in Charleston but most of our friends head here to visit in the summer...we like going to Charleston and Florida in Jan. or February. The best part as a retiree is your money goes further...we got so much more house and property for same $$$ as living in Charleston. We also like being close to so many different places during these years...I have been retired since December and love the freedom to do whatever I want whenever I want...$$$ is important as there won't be anymore increases and we want to travel and enjoy it. We enjoy the people the most...very friendly and down to earth with lots of Christian values..so refreshing after big city. We lived in Anchorage AK for four years in the 80s and find Waynesville has alot of the beauty we enjoyed in Alaska and definitely not as cold in the winter.
My vote is for Waynesville too!!

We have talked of retirement in the TN, NC area.

BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We go every year! :hearts:

Its only about 3 or 4 hours drive from Atlanta; we'd practically be neighbors!

I also recommend Atlanta; so many diverse neighborhoods and mid weather. Great restaurants, parks, museums... I love it here!
Upstate NY? hmmm. really no resposne to that that won't get me introuble. Let's see besides the snow and the cold, we have the highest (or nearly highest) personal tax burden in the country. we do have ongoing entertainment in the form of the most dysfunctional legislature in the country. NY - a nice place to visit but I wouldn't want to live here.
You're right, everyone is retiring to North Carolina these days. As a native, I know there is much to recommend it. I've lived and traveled enough places to know, there's no place like home...and I like calling North Carolina home.

Come visit! We've got the Tarheel OES Rescue picnic coming up in just a few weeks. You'd enjoy that for sure!! 8)

hey you said phoenix...traitor!
Darcy, you must admit that the views in the Phoenix area are not that beautiful. Alot of desert, but we do have the mountains. I just long for seasons changing and trees......I've been here forever. How about Pennsylvania?
i really like arizona...driving on the 51 in the spring and fall or even driving up tatum, looking at camelback mountain, makes me smile....

no, its not green like michigan and there is no great ''watering hole''...and the dust drives me crazy...but you still couldnt pay me to move back to a snow state.....

what about northern az or my personal favorite...southern california???

do you have family back east? is that the main reason for going that way?
For awhile here I knew many folks wanting the "seasons" leaving here and going to NW Arkansas.....Benton County area: Rogers, Eldorado, etc. For some reason they seem to escape the nasty weather in other areas of Arkansas and Oklahoma, are up in the mtns so get color, etc.
I visited AZ and my sinuses acted up... I thought it was supposed to be GOOD for breathing??? ;)
I'm all for San Miguel de Allende Mexico! lol
Darcy, if you are going up 51 to Tatum, you are near Pat Wolter, the OES rescue lady. She's off Union Hills and 51....about 1.5 miles west. You should stop and see her and pet some pups.

And my allergies were WAY worse in So Cal than they are here...I guess it's what people are sensitive to, allergy-wise.

Even though I don't enjoy living here, Virginia is a pretty good place. The summers are hot and humid, but we have seasons and the winters are usually pretty mild, with maybe one or 2 snows a year, so that makes them fun and not annoying. We get a nice fall with all the leaves. As long as you don't move to Northern VA, then the prices are good too.
the 51 is parrallel to tatum.....but both run thru the mountains.....id love to go pet some puppies!!!!!!!!!!!!

its funny because i had really bad allergies in michigan and now theyre not so bad!
what about northern Wisconsin.....nice seasons...we have had mild winters
not like NY....and I have a house on the river I can sell you
Ron wrote:

Not anymore, everyone moved here from the rest of the US and planted all of the same non-native trees that caused the allergies back home  Plus, the humidity and the smog/dust have gone up over the years. So, it's no longer a haven for allergy/asthma sufferers.

But I agree with Darcy - I think the desert is beautiful. Sunsets here are amazing. We have some beautiful reservoir lakes to play on in the summer. I'm very happy here. The only thing that could make it better would be a little cabin in Prescott for the summer weekends. 8)
Been in California all my life...and we are planning a move to Colorado. I am in love with the state, and my husband's mother came from there, so he has a special fondness.
We're in the western MD mountains. Great 4 season weather, snow & ice in winter ( an occasional blizzard every now & then ), beautiful spring, warm but tolerable summer, and spectacular fall, and only 4 hours to the beach.
That said we are shopping, at least we were until the "economic crisis", for a retirement place someplace on the Outer Banks of NC south to Wilmington. We lived in Swansboro for 3 years in the late 70's ( yes I'm getting old ) and loved it.....I can do the beach 24/7.
I can tell you where not to move to - Louisiana. Well that is unless you like alligators, mosquitos that carry west nile virus, hurricanes, and really, really good food. Oh yes and I forgot - really hot humid weather.
Speaking of retirement, these guys have it worked out.

Drill team for retired guys.
