Summer Knitting! (LOTS of pics)

Since school ended I have been having a BALL, knitting til my fingers are so sore I can hardly stand it. I've discovered that there isn't anywhere I can't pull out a ball of yarn and my needles. LOTS of hours at the Fire House have been used PRODUCTIVELY.

These are some of the things i've done, two sweaters and a scarf for my daughter and LOTS of baby stuff

I'm so jealous of people that can knit as well as you do! Those pieces are so beautiful!!!
Gorgeous!
WOW Ginny just lovely. What a way to go with all these lovely hand knitted things. Your daughter and Grand bub are so lucky mom (Grandma) can create such lovely things. :D

I am hopeless at crafty stuff, Kelsey did try but fell asleep trying to knit her doggie blankie. 8)

You are awesome!!

Ginny!

Wow oh wow! you got some knitting done, I don't knit in the summer and this summer I wanted to, but with remodel of the kitchen, a little tough and dirty....

You stuff looks great!
Thanks!, I really enjoy knitting and usually have several projects going. The blankets all have sweaters to go with them (in various stages of done). But who knows when they will get done  I'm making them a 6 month size, I figure In Washington they won't need a sweater for the first few months!!
Holy cow, you're GOOD. I can't knit, but I can crochet. My right hand is ummmm, slow, lol. It took years to realize that I was crocheting half backwards, after learning from my right handed mother. Things don't turn out right when you do them half backwards. Keep up the good work!
WOW, Ginny! 8O I'm SO impressed with your talent! Everything is just gorgeous! Love the patterns you knit into them. I'm so jealous, too, because although I wish I could do something like that, I just don't have the patience for it.
Woweee!!!

Which one does Doug wear?

HAHAHA!
I have never knit a sweater for Doug, there is something (well known to all knitters) called the "Boyfriend Sweater curse". As soon as you knit the guy a sweater he hits the road!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am a knitter and crocheter....but I don't do much in the summer....you are awesome.....beautiful work :P
My mother was a fair knitter -- but her hats just seemed to grow and grow...
absolutely incredible. you certainly are prolific and talented!!!
Incredible! No other words come to mind. The detail in the scarf is ...incredible.
Oh My Gosh I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, the cream baby sweater and accesories - ahhhhhh I can just visualize my little baby in those!! You have done a great job. I also have been knitting like mad this summer - tons of booties and blankies and hats, but I haven't been ambitious enough to try a sweater. You have done a great job!
WELL!!!!!!!!!!! Let's see the pictures!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WOW WOW WOW - You do an awesome job that is some of the most beautiful work I have ever seen. When I was little my older sister knitted me a scarf and by the time I walked to the bustop it had all unravelled.
Beautiful! Fantastic! Gorgeous!
I knit too, but only simple pattern blankets. I'm so jealous. Way to go
What beautiful work Ginny. Your grandbaby will be the best dressed. Thank you for sharing your talent with us.
Holy crap!!! You should be selling those!!! I am soo impressed!

sorry to hear about the knitting boyfriend curse, but im sure that there is no girlfriend curse...hint hint!!!
Aww, great job!!

I just stole a scarf from my mom that she had knitted for herself. I love hand knit stuff - so warm...
Everything is so beautiful!! I wish I could do that kind of stuff but I am all thumbs and probably a little stupid.........All the old ladies at the assisted living where Guinness and I visit tried to teach me but they went to dang fast!!!

If there is a "knitted girlfriend curse" at least you would walk off with a great sweater Darcy.
Ginny, the sweaters are wonderful! Do I place my order here or in a pm :)
I can't believe how awesome those look, Ginny. I love the striped blanket. Darcy's right, you really could sell your stuff!
Beautiful knitting, everything looks so perfect :clappurple: :clappurple:
Oh!! I LOVE that scarf :hearts: :clappurple: There is a chilly breeze here this morning & it looks so lovely and cozy haha
I love that first scarf!! I started knitting this past winter, still haven't finished anything yet :?

It's ok, it's a "process" not a "product", just enjoy the knitting!
:D Wow! I'm really impressed. When I did knit anything, it was always in a straight line!
Ginny, all I can say is WOW! You are a knitting machine.

Those are fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am with Darcy on the sweater. Now if I ever start collecting Harry's hair I know who would be able to do something with it for me.

I see a side business in your future. Especially with the internet you could have a business without ever leaving your home (or the firehouse - LOL).
Thanks everyone, un fortuantely what people are willing to pay for hand knit items makes it not a "money maker". I also tend to use very high priced yarn (no acrylic in this house) which makes it even more difficult to sell.

I will often be in the store and see a beautiful cable sweater for 49.00 and think, I COULDN'T BUY THE YARN FOR THAT AMOUNT!!!!!!!!!

One of my patients owns a business hand painting yarn and has gotten me addicted to REALLY high end yarn, some of the yarn he and his wife makes sells for $40.00 a skein and it can take 4 or 5 skeins to make a sweater (I don't make ALOT of those  )

I would love nothing more than to work full time on the ambulance and be able to sit in the Firehouse and knit all the time. Covering ambulance is when I really got serious about knitting. When I am at home I could never just sit for hours and hours and knit without feeling guilty, at the fire house I'm waiting for calls.
Just like there is a market for $40 a skein yarn, there is a market for $200 beautifully knit sweaters. you just need to find that market.
You do incredible work.
$200?

At $40 a skein it would be what, $400 for the yarn?
Even at only $100 worth of yarn, how many hours go into a beautiful cabled sweater like that?

I remember a long time ago thinking how expensive it would be. There must be a less expensive way to get a high quality yarn though.

How about sheepiefur? :D
Joan said 7 skeins, and figures skeins at about $5 for good quality wool. I'm guessing she hasn't bought a skein in a while. I upped it to 10 skeins for my size. :D :D :D

Sheepie fur may be plentiful but is labor-intensive to prepare for spinning. Wash, de-hair, blend with other fibers to make stronger and more resilient... Spinning is an art in itself and can be very time consuming.

Forty dollars for a skein of yarn is very reasonable if not downright cheap. Anything worth doing is worth the cost of using good materials.
I assume the sweater isn't all done inthe handpainted yarn. but you know if it were I bet there would be a market - somewhere.

actually - you need to design purses or bags using the high priced yarn and market them to Macys etc. smaller item, higher price, more profit :)
Welllllllllllllllllllllllllll, actually.................................. I guess I need to admit to actually making a few sweaters out of the $40.00 yarn   (Doug has NO IDEA how much yarn can cost).

BUTTTTTTTTTTTTTT, I buy a lot of yarn on ebay and the beauty of handpainted (or varigated) yarn is that you can use different dyelots and it works ok. My "favorite" yarn is Schaefer yarn and you can often get it on ebay for 1/2 price.

Consequently I have HUNDREDS of skeins of yarn in my "stash" because I scour ebay everyday for my favorite brands and if I can get a few skein of a color I like at a good price I buy it in the hope that I will eventually find more of the same and end up with enough for a project. One of my goals this year is to catalog my stash so I have a better handle on what I have. I know (don't tell Doug) that I have rubber maid containers full of yarn that I have completely forgotten about.

I also have several internet sites that have great sales that I check weekely. In fact today I am REALLY struggling because one of my favoties sites (littleknits.com) is having a sale this week on a GORGEOUS wool from Uraguay that normally sells for $7.20 for a 72 yard skein for $2.50 a skein. For a cabled sweater I would need about 2,000 yards......

Cable sweaters use ALOT more yarn than straight knitting and I will use a yarn that is less expensive for that.

I also DON'T use expensive yarn for my daughters sweaters (maybe when she is older). Typically yarn for a sweater for her will cost $50-$70.

You can get yarn for $5.00 a skein and many people do, but's usually acrylic or an acrylic blend and works fine. But I must admit to being someting of a yarn snob and once you have worked with natural fibers the others just won't do.

A yarn from sheepie fur would be lovely, but it DOES take a ton. Had I realized what a knitting freak I was going to become I would have started saving Tasker furn years ago. There are places you can have it spun into fiber.

Ginny, are the arm holes on this very high and small or is it an illusion and the sweater goes to the knees?
No, it's an illusion. I think it is a combination of the fact that the picutre is at an angle instead of straight on (I would have had to stand on a chair) and the way the sweater lays on the table it's kinda "bunched"together.

It's compounded by the fact that the sleeves look really really long but actually the bottom part is supposed to be cuffed up.
what if i send you the yarn?????

i am just drooling every time i look at these pics!
Wow, Ginny, you are really talented!! I am so impressed!! :D

Darcy, you figure out how to get me more knitting hours in a day and you don't even have to send the yarn!!!!!!!!!!

Tammy, I really am not talented. I can just follow directions. TALENT are the folks who figure out all these patterns and write them down for us!
awww....i wish i could give you 4 extra hours a day....its just sweet that youd use your good yarn for me.....

i love ya!
