Mom's in the hospital and Bob lost a shoe

Laast Thursday Mom had 3 teeth and 6 "stumps" extracted in preparation for upper dentures. Everything is healing nicely except one spot which bledandbledandbled. Then stopped. Then bledandbledandbled. For a week. Two visits to the oral surgeon, two visits to the dentist, and one visit to her internist all this week. Today the oral surgeon admitted her to the hospital and tomorrow she's going under and he's going to clean everything up and see what is bleeding. Oh, and she's on Coumadin. So keep Naomi in your thoughts and prayers and send healing vibes. And good karma to the oral surgeon that he finds the bleeder.

Went to ride after work-- it is a perfect summer day. And Bob lost a shoe. He loses a shoe MAYBE once every 5 years. And he has to have shoes because of his leg injury. The rest of the weekend is supposed to be beautiful and I don't know when the farrier will be out. *sigh* So I guess we'll have lots of "mother pony bonding time."

So how's YOUR day going????

So do you pull the other three shoes when Bob tosses one? Or is he unbalanced right now?

Sorry about your Mom. That Coumadin is tough....hubby just does aspirin and surgeons always under estimate it's effect on him. Each time he has surgery they say stop 10 days before and then comment what "a bleeder" he was. Mother in on C and bruises if you look cross eyed at her.

Day is very quiet and I'm trying to keep it that way. I needed this quiet day, it's been busy for awhile.

I am sorry to hear about your Mom. Prayers and positive thoughts going her way. I hope Bob's shoe situation gets taken care of soon. Keep us updated.
Good old coumadin!!! Sending "coagulation" thoughts her way!!

Poor Bob!
May your mom stop bleeding and Bob get his shoe today.
My Mom is also on Coumadin..... she had the same bleeding problem when she got her first set of dentures. Hope it all goes well for her.... Keeping fingers crossed!!!

BOB.... Stop taking your shoes off when you are not supposed to!!
As I write this, Mom is "in surgery." I'll do an update when I hear anything. I'm 50 miles away, my sister is 120 miles away, and my brother is 1 mile away. Of course he didn't think it necessary for him to be at the hospital today. This is one of the many reasons I don't speak to him.

Bob will be in the "gimp pasture" (for the injured horses) until the farrier puts his shoe on. Of course he was acting all crippled last night---"I looooost my shoe and my foooooot hurts and I can't waaaalk." He is such an actor sometimes.
Paula...prayers for your mom today that everything is successful...

(Bob.....hope you get your shoe soon...wingtip or a penny loafer????? )
Oh Paula, I'm saying a prayer for your mom. I'm sure she will be fine, its just difficult to go through any surgery.

Tell Bob to go to shoebuy.com. They may not have his size, but they can probably order one
paula...hope your mom come thru with flying colors!!!!! and bob, sheesh, did you really have to have a new set of shoes? what was wrong with the old set?

(im ducking..)

Saddle shoes, of course!

Bob wears 4 shoes. He lost one (in the front) and is not balanced. Imagine wearing only one shoe and doing aerobics. That's how he is feeling now. He won't need 4 new shoes, just the one replaced. He gets new shoes (all 4) every 6-8 weeks.

I spoke with the oral surgeon's office and either he or the secretary will call me when the surgery is over. I should have gone down there to be with her this morning.
Sending lots of good vibes for your Mom.

Sorry about Bob, hope he gets his new shoe soon.

Can you go see her when she gets out of surgery? I hope they solve whatever is ailing her.

Poor Bob. Sorry he is without his shoe.

Shoulda, woulda, coulda....don't kick yourself. Just be there for her!!! Hugs, Paula!
Just talked to my sister. The oral surgeon cleaned everything up, packed the area, cauterized it, and it's still bleeding. He said it's definitely due to to the g-d Coumadin and is ordering a bunch o' blood tests to figure out what's going on. I was hoping there was a simple answer. :(
:ghug:

Hang in there, sweetheart.
I talked to the oral surgeon. He's extremely concerned about why she's still bleeding. Her INR level is at "coagulation" so she shouldn't be bleeding. He has called in a hematologist because he suspects there is an underlying condition. He said (and this is a direct quote) "this is a serious situation."

Needless to say, I am going to the hospital this weekend!
Wow, Paula, I am so sorry to hear about your mom. Did the doctor give you any ideas of what the underlying condition could be? I'm on coumadin and usually you bleed longer than usual, but then it eventually clots.

Please keep us posted. Wish I were closer and that I could help you out waiting for the farrier to arrive.
I hope your mom is alright, it does sound serious. Good thing she went in.
:ghug: Thinking of you!
Fingers crossed! My mom is also on Warafin/Coumadin and it is a pain for sure, but dental anything is really a pain. I hope you MIL is doing better by the time you get all these well wishes for her.

How is Bob? is it like riding a horse with a flat tire when they throw a shoe? Somehow it's murphys law that you will have a nice weekend, your horse threw a shoe and you will be in waiting room land.... sounds hellish to me...... or a really bad dream...
I hope your mother has been keeping up on her Pro Time checks. This doesn't sound good. I hope they can get her squared around today or tomorrow!
Paula,

Sending positive thoughts for your mom's quick recovery. Hugs to you. :ghug:

Regarding Bob's shoes, I was going to suggest borrowing some of Darcy's but can't picture saddle shoes in her closet. Hope the farrier shows up soon.

I am glad he is calling in a hematoligist. Be aware that many hematologists are also oncologists - it doesn't mean that you are dealing with cancer however.
Be sure they consult the docor who put her on the coumadin.
I assume they did clotting tests before her dental work and adjusted her coumadin as needed. I wonder if she has had any Vitamin K? After checking with the doctor who ordered the coumadin, of ocurse.

Vitamin K is a coagulant and also shows up in the INR test.

True on both counts. Sometimes they will go ahead and give Vitamin K if the INR is boderline normal and the patient is bleeding. It rarely hurts, is cheap and sometimes even effective for blleding patients on coumadin.
And it might buy some time while they figure out what is going on in the cascade to interfere with clotting.
I worked with an oncology/hematology group for many years. :D
Paula
Wishing you the best...
You and your mom will be in our thoughts!
:ghug:
Mom has her ProTime checked evey 2 weeks under normal circumstances and every day for the last 2 weeks. The really odd thing is her INR is about 1.2, despite having been on Lovanox 5 days prior to the surgery and now she's back on Coumadin. So she should be clotting. The hematologist said he doesn't think it's a blood disorder, but related to the anti-coagulants. He's called in a cardiologist that is not Mom's usual, so maybe a fresh pair of eyes can figure this out. The good thing is that Mom said last night (Friday) she wasn't bleeding, so maybe it has stopped.

Looks like rain, so I wouldn't be riding anyway! And yes, riding a horse with only one shoe is like driving a car with a flat tire. Totally unbalanced, and can cause pony muscle strain.
Even if it had not be raining you would not have ridden...would you? With your buddy's physical problems, I'd sure not want to aggrevate anything. Poor Bob, can't get any sympathy, give him a handful of oats for me.

Glad you mother's bleeding has stopped.

That's great news Paula. I guess in some ways it's good that they can see the actual bleeding and she's not bleeding internally someplace.

Maybe they didn't give enough of a chance for the Coumadin values to drop while starting the Lovenox prior to the surgery although the 1.2 range is good. The couple times I did the course of Lovenox first and then the Coumadin, it took the Coumadin almost 2 weeks to get up to the correct values, then finally when it did, and I was still on the Lovenox, I had some serious bruises just from having compression stockings on. The Lovenox & Coumadin are pretty major drugs.

I also have to thank you for sharing what's going on with your mom. This info will really be helpful when facing any type of surgery.
As of this morning Mom still was NOT bleeding, so things are looking up. And Bob got his shoe on, but not until an hour ago and it was too late to ride. There was a torrential downpour which flooded the outdoor arena!

Anti-coagulants are really tricky to manage. Supposedly it takes 5 days for Coumadin to get to the therapeutic levels, and 5 days for it to leave the body. Lovenox takes only 12 hours to reach therapeutic levels, but only stays in the body 12 hours. I had a long talk with the Lovenox rep last week about this. I hope this is all behind Mom and she can start to heal. She needs her upper dentures!
Glad to hear Mom is doing better! :D

I bet Bob is happy to have his new shoe.
Glad to hear the bleeding stopped. (and Bob got his shoe) Maybe things will calm down,
I'm glad to hear your mom is on the mend.

Bob has his shoe, so hopefully it dries out enough to ride.....in the meanwhile are you watching the eventing dressage in the Olympics?? It is on the USA channel right now! beautiful!
