Severe Sheepdog Syndrome!

Hi

I know all sheepies get dirty but gosh, when I visited my parents and their OES puppy, Cooper in CA- ive never met a dog with a severe sheepdog syndrome!! He is perfectly fluffy and puffy, has the most beautiful coat but his mouth and neck gets flithy everyday!!

He tend to go out in the doggie door, eat dirt, drink water and then eat dirt again. :)

It's a good thing that Cooper loves showers - he'd sit in the shower all day long or until my parents sees him... but it's getting tiring for my parents to keep his muddied chin clean. They want to keep his coat long and fluffy as possible!

my question is how do you prevent your sheepie from going into dirt without having to refrain him or her going outside? It gets hot in CA and most of the time, Coop likes to sleep on the pavement under the trees.

Tonks and Luna ate ALOT of dirt when they were smaller. They just seemed to grow out of it.
Charlie LOVES the mud! If there's a spot in the yard, he'll find it and put his face and front paws in it until the cows come home! I knew we'd be giving him baths at least once a week but it's at least every other day--sometimes more. Fortunately, he's good about them but it takes a lot of time. I'm hoping he'll grow out of it a bit so we don't spend all our time in the tub with him!!
Get rid of the dirt. Replace with stones.
Instead of constantly washing the grub bubs beard and front after his dirt playing and drinking, let him dry off, go outside with some "Corn Starch", "Potato Starch" or Baby Powder with Corn Starch init, Johnsons has a good one there, sprinkle it onto the area that is soiled, then just run a brush through it and all will come away ready for the Dirtless Fuzz ball to come inside then.

Saves all that washing and drying of the fuzz ball. 8)

Hey mine are on there way to the "Olympics" they have discovered the joys of DIRT, paws and claws and being grub bubs, so I use this method instead of constantly washing them. They should be poking there noses through in Beijing in time for the opening ceremony with the hole they are excavating at the moment!! :P
I am going to try the corn starch...I swear both of mine have swamp mouth...I don't want kisses from that!!!
Lisa, no, they aren't going to China, they want to visit Brian in Norway!

Just letting the mud dry and brush it out works OK too. The cornstarch is better but sometimes not handy.

Dogs vary in their ability to drop dirt naturally. The coarser the coat the better the drop. My Pyrs and adult sheepies have been great about dropping their dirt .

Puppies with their soft coat won't be as accomodating as he will be when he gets older. Then the clean up is wherever he decides to lie down to nap.

Too much soap or shampoo will dry the coat. Your parents need to chill out and let the little bugger do his doggie things......and also get him out walking more. Remember, the tired puppy is a good puppy (less digging).
:D :D

Our first Sheepie Prince loved to stay cool in the summer outside
on days when the temperature was ok to be outside.

From the kitchen window you could see dirt flying in all directions
and his concentration on digging a hole under the shade of
our oak tree along the fence line.

Next you would see him jump in facing the house, and you could
only see a cute sheepie head and eyes peeking out.

Solid comfort, and so cool 8)

Our solution--
Keep him in a short puppy cut and frequent baths!
Concrete the yard!
