Weeing problem

A good friend of mine has a 4-year old spayed OES female, Lily. She has had Lily since she was a puppy. Lily is your typical happy go lucky friendly OES who loves everyone. However, she is at her wit's end with Lily because of her constant weeing when someone comes to the door, or when she sees someone coming down the sidewalk. She will make her sit when someone comes to the door and Lily will lean just enough to go on the floor. She rarely goes when Mary is home, but does occasionally go to one of the bedrooms to wee and more. Lily has the run of the house. She had Lily checked out at the vet but nothing is physically wrong. They just had the carpeting replaced because of all the accidents. She is pulling her hair out. Any suggestions? Thank you.

Has she done (what sounds like) the submissive wetting thing (pees as she greets people) since she was a puppy or did she start more recently?

Any major changes in the family? New baby? Major change in work schedule? Illness? New dog? Anything?

Submissive wetters tend to be very soft dogs that often don't handle change well at all and any added stress could lead to potty problems. Of course, being spayed, she could also be incontinent and just plain not be able to hold it. And if she's been scolded for having accidents (which is an easy leap, because why would a potty trained dog suddenly revert, right?), that would add to her stress and the cycle continues.

If she is indeed physically fine it's kind of hard to say what's going on without more info. Not fun though. Please suggest to your friend that she not make her sit to greet people if she can help it. You want to break that pattern of sit = pee for starters. And if she is a very insecure dog (dogs can be friendly and outgoing and still be almost pathologically insecure) the other thing to do would be confidence building exercises. It's hard to say without seeing the dog, though. How frustrating for your friend.

I would of said submissive peeing as well, just a very gentle and soft nature.

I would suggest what Kristine said, not sitting her when visitors arrive, as well as handing to the visitors a treat for the dog and after they greet the dog a gentle pat and snack so she relates this to a good fun thing and hopefully her confidence will build up more and the peeing subside.

Also they need to get her out and about more, taking her for walks down a busy street, like a shopping strip, let people fuss and ooh aaah over her to help her submissive nature and build confidence. A pocket of treats and when strangers stop and pat her, reward her with a treat. Nice and slowly and in a happy calm voice after the treat with "Good Girl"

I am sure this will get better in the pee department, they just need to make this a good fun thing with anyone that visits the house and out and about more into crowds of people to help her associate all these different things as being really good.
