Do you pull the fur in your dog's ears

My vet insists it is not necessary to pull the fur in the dogs ears. When we have them groomed the groomer says its necessary. But then Beauford always has problems afterwards. I clean their ears everyday and really deep clean them once a week with the medicine from the vet. I know some of you pull and some dont I'm interested to find out the pros and cons.

There was no "Just a little bit" choice so I voted yes...

But actually I only do it a little bit and just in certain spots. Baloo has never really ever had any problems so far with his ears so I just make sure they are clean and dry. I've not actually sat down and intentionally plucked his ears. Like I said... just the occassional pull & tweek.

Seems to work for us -- so far.
I think it's only necessary to pluck if you have to. I don't bother anything that isn't a problem. Clyde really isn't a hairy ear dog. If I pull a tuft out once a year, that's a lot. I wipe his ear flaps down with alcohol regularly to get any residue off but I only clean the inside of his ears out occasonally. check them often but he really doesn't need it.

My Komondor, on the other hand, has little old man ears. Tons of white hair in there. If you don't pluck that out on a Kom, it'll cord in there and then you'll have all sorts of problems. Bear never gets infections but it will get all-around gross if we don't keep up on it. I hate doing it because it's such a process. Bear is a huge baby about it and swats and wriggles around and all the excitement riles up Clyde and he comes over to bark like a maniac. I always think "This time will be different," so I don't gate Clyde away and every time I'm disappointed-- mostly in myself for being such an optimistic dummy to think Clyde won't get involved! [/code]
i tried to do it, I really did. But the girls are so fussy, and I wasn't sure i was doing it right, despite my reading and re-reading the tutorial.

Luna's has cute clean, pink little ears. They always look immaculate. Tonks on the other hand I have to clean out weekly; its always dirty and I remove alot of waxy build up. But neither has ever gotten an infection.

I had asked the groomer to do it when I brought them in for their first summer cut, and afterwards noticed that they groomer had SHAVED the fur there instead of plucking it. I don't know if the girls were so bad about it that it was their only choice, or if its what they normally do. But I was under the impression that shaving the fur in there was a mistake.

I wondered about trimming the fur in their ears too. Whats everyone's opinion on that?
I added the "If needed" option... it depends on the dog. Sky has very little hair in her ears and I don't have to worry about plucking hers. Panda is at the other extreme and has more fur in her ears than I've ever seen so it needs to be done every couple weeks.
When I adopted Violet back about 5 years ago she had cronic ear infections. Between the Vet and the Groomer you would have thought the ears would have cleared up. They never did completely...so I decided on the "hands off" approach. I bath her once a week and clean her ears then. I do not pull any hair out of her ears and she had been infection free since.

I guess every dog is different. Sometimes less is more.

Good luck in your decision!
I pluck probably once a month, the 3 of them are esed ro it so I ddon't have any problems.
I pluck every couple of months.
I pluck weekly to keep on top of it. None of mine have ever been bothered by it.
Mine go to the groomers and I sometimes bathe them inbetween. I have never plucked, but some of mine have needed it. I think my groomer takes care of it, but I do clean them when their ears get waxy. I have drops and powder I use afterward.
Thanks for adding the sometimes. I couldnt get it to edit. I dont seem to have problems when I keep their ears clean. Do any of you trim the hairs?
i pluck and use small hemostat scissor on the inside about every 6 weeks
Dutch doesn't have a lot of ear hair so I don't pluck her ears and so far she has been infection free,
Ru has very hairy ears, he had an infection once. The vet said don't pull the hairs out but I couldn't even see inside his ear they were so hairy, I had to pull them! We found the infection didn't clear up until we stopped using the deep cleaning drops. I'm no vet but how about using the drops maybe every 2 weeks and see how it is after a month? If it's still bad, maybe your vet can suggest something else.
We pull Ru's hairs every 2 weeks, he really hates it poor fellow.
When I was at college I was told that I have to plug the dogs ears otherwise the hair will grow to the inside and the dog will get an ear infection!

I know that some pull them and some not, so I am confused as well which is the right way to do!? I still pull the hair out of Charlie's ears everytime I groom her and she never had any problems with it, it looks more she enjoys it cause she can hear better!?  :?:
I pluck Oscar's ears using the gripping powder about every two months. He has not had any ear problems yet, other than the whole deaf thing..... 8)

He goes to the groomer every two weeks, but I have asked her not to pluck his ears as Oscar is very sensitive about them. He doesn't like going to get a bath as it is, and I didn't want it to be more traumatic than necessary. So I get to be the bad guy, as usual, and pluck his ear hair.

Laurie and Oscar
We have to with Sami full of hair in ears, Blue not so bad.
