Excited peeing...

I love Hudson very much. And we are totally committed to working through any and everything he needs. But I must admit that I am starting to feel like everything that could be a problem has become a problem and there's always a new disaster on the horizon.

So, today we go to the vet for a puppy shot and some heartworm pills (since he's growing we're actually buying them one month or so at a time), and to check on his rash and to see if he's growing at all (he's still pretty tiny) etc...

He loves the vet clinic and they LOVE him. He's been there a bunch of times and has been very well behaved (all things considered...he is an evil puppy after all).

So today, every single time someone greeted him he peed. Oh joy. And today he went out in the backyard and discovered a friend of ours (he knows her well). He flew across the deck, jumped off the fence on the end (not a safe distance particularly), wagged so hard his bum looked like it would fall off, and PEED everywhere...including her feet.

We're now telling everyone we meet to do the dog whispering greeting (no eye contact, no words, no touch) until he's calm, but it's really hard to get everyone to comply.

Is there any chance that this could be a phase? Or something he may grow out of? We're trying to have him sit when he gets excited, and we'll keep working on it of course, but can anyone tell me this isn't necessarily going to be something he does from now on to forever? It's hard to change everyone else's behaviours to accomodate this...and it would be nice for him to be able to handle the occasional rambunctious greeting.

I'll be strong and capable again tomorrow (he's already in his crate for tonight), but right now I just need consolation...sigh.

Thanks for listening to my whining.....I just needed to let it out.

Wow - you've put into words exactly what I've been feeling about Fitzwilliam lately! You have my full sympathy, and thank you - it's nice to know I'm not alone ... misery loves company? And tomorrow, maybe I'll be strong and capable too. Maybe.

I don't know about excited peeing - but it seems to me the dog whisperer greeting is a good idea. I try to get people to do the no eye contact, no words, no touch with Fitzwilliam too (not because he gets happy & over-excited though - quite the opposite, he's wary and suspicious of excited people, he really doesn't like rambunctious greetings AT ALL; it's quite worrying.) I guess we need a happy medium between Hudson & Fitzwilliam, eh? :D

Hang in there!
Tracie...

I am no expert, but Heart did go through an excited peeing stage when she was about 7-9 months old and she did grow out of it. You do not say how old Hudson is but just from your description of his behaviour--is he is still in that puppyhood????

He may being going through the 2nd fear stage I have read about here. We discussed this in our obedience class a couple of weeks ago too!!!

I am sure you will get many expert advice but in my opinion, the whisper greeting is a great calming tool!

Good Luck and keep us posted.....
Baloo did this for a very very short time as well. Luckily it didn't last too long. Only I think a total of 4 or 5 times all together, then just as suddenly that he started doing it -- he never did it again.

Whew... I am glad it didn't last long. Hang in there. Hopefully it will pass soon.
Wow, what a difference a good night's sleep makes. (Well, not actually good, because there was a storm and our ten year old sheepie had issues all night...but it's sunny and clear now, so I feel better.)

Just hearing that other dogs have grown out of it is great news. This seems a little insurmountable right now because I can't protect him from every excited person he meets.

He is about four and a half months right now, so there's lots of growing left to do, and now I feel a little more calm. And he did just have a growth spurt (8 pounds in eleven days in fact) so maybe his "parts" have just grown a little unevenly and he needs to even out. He's up to 30.6 lbs now - still small for his age, but he is growing at a relatively normal rate.
