Chicago Advice Needed

Hubby and I are going to Chicago in September. We are doing the "All American" thing and taking the Amtrak from Kansas City on a Thursday (maybe Friday), going to the Cards/Cubs game on Saturday, then returning on Sunday. Can anyone give us some advice on where to stay, what transportation is like (we aren't planning on renting a car), and some fun things to do?

I've only been to Chicago on business, so I'm pretty excited!

I've used Priceline for hotel rooms in Chicago with great success. I pick 4 r 5 star and usually just pick the Loop or Grant Park as a search term. The last time, we stayed at the Palmer House Hilton on the executive floor for $65 a night over the weekend-- it's usually at least 3 times that.
Hi, we have stayed in Chicago a number of times. The area we like to stay and is a little more affordable is on Wacker St. There are various hotels that range in price from just over 100 a night. Club Quarters is nice and has a restaurant/bar on the main floor that had some tasty appetizers. The bartenders always have good advice about where to eat, catch some jazz etc. There is also a hotel right next door to club quarters with a number in it's name ???? I would say call club quarters and if there is no availability ask them the name of the hotel that is next door.
As far as transportation, it's best to just grab a taxi for transportation.
Depending on what your style is, there are some fun restaurants in the area as well.

Thanks for the advice guys! We are really looking forward to our trip, but its such a big city! We usually like to go to the small quaint places for vacation.
It's been years since we stayed there, but The Palmer House is very conveniently located--walking distance to museums and restaurants.
That sounds like a fun idea for a vacation. Hope y'all enjoy it!

I think it would be a good idea for a surprise getaway for my SO. He'd enjoy the train ride to be sure. I'll have to keep that in mind. :)
Lately, we've been flying or taking the Megabus (which is only $1 if you plan it right). It's cheaper than driving and paying for gas and parking, not to mention the inconvenience of driving.
I used to live in Chicago but now I'm a frequent visitor. My favorite hotel right now is the Homewood Suites on E Grand Avenue. You get more space - kitchenette, living area and bedroom. They have a great breakfast included. If you're here during the week they have a dinner spread - you can definitely make a meal out of it if you're counting pennies. AND, the most important part - it's right across the street from Nordstroms for convenient shoe shopping  . You can get to Michigan Ave through Nordstroms so you're right in the heart of everything.

This week we found a good deal at the Hyatt Regency. (I'm on the 25th floor looking down on the Chicago River and Navy Pier.) I think you just need to follow Jill's advice and check the websites for good deals. There are so many great things to do here - you can spend hours wandering on the Lakefront. There are lots of concerts/events in Grant Park, here's a link to the schedule http://www.millenniumpark.org/parkevents/Default.aspx
Navy Pier is fun, lots of food and shops and a great view of the lake. Lincoln Park Zoo is right on the lakefront, has great exhibits and is FREE. Can't beat that! You can take boat tours on the river and the lake - either high speed boats, tour boats or sailing boats. I really recommend the Chicago Architecture Foundation's River Cruise. You'll learn a lot about the amazing architects that worked in Chicago and Chicago's history. http://www.architecture.org/tours.aspx

Transportation is easy, you don't want to rent a car. Hotels will charge a fortune for parking. There is defiitely NO parking at Wrigley Field. You can take the El train from downtown to the Cubs game. The trains and buses are really convenient. The CTA (Chicago Transit Authority) offers a Visitor Fun Pass for unlimited rides.

Have a great time!
Howdy! I live in the northern suburbs of Chicago. Its about an hour from us.

Chicago is such a great place, especially in the summer. Just last weekend we went to the city and visited Lincoln Park Zoo (free admission) and then the Lincoln Park Conservitory..also free.

There is always soooo much to do here! Fabulous shopping on Michigan Avenue, great nightlife (although I'm now too old to enjoy that  ) great food, and the lake...OH LORD, THAT FABULOUS LAKE!!!!!!

It is such a fun city...Please do come visit us! We even have a haunted tour, and a GANGSTER tour!!!

And if you come in early October, you can attend SheepieFest!!!!

We're all very proud of our city...
