Ice Cubes

Hello all,

I read a few threads on this forum that says some sheepies throw up after eating ice cubes- it appears Gus has started this wonderful trend... He loves, and I mean LOVES, ice cubes. We usually give him one a few times a night, when someone goes into the freezer. Gus very rarely throws up, but we've noticed a few times lately that we'll give Gus an ice cube and he'll throw up shortly after, which means his entire dinner comes up (although it's usually an hour or two after he eats). Is it common that ice cubes will cause a "shock" to his stomach? I think it's possible that we're seeing problems lately since he's huge now and can virtually swallow the ice cubes whole, hence a bigger chunk sits in his stomach now.

Do they ever outgrow this problem? I am sad thinking about my poor pup sticking his head in the freezer and not getting a treat anymore- think a frozen dog treat would cause the same problem?

We had success with freezing water in plastic cups.
Then he can lick it like a popsicle. You control the amount by holding the cup.
After a few licks, I tell him to take a break.

We give him just a short amount of time with the popsicle
and make sure fresh water is available. He usually drinks
and is happy about his summer ice treat.

We learned this when he was teething then just continued the
tradition.
In our experience, it worked in reverse. When Clyde was little, he could eat cube after cube but since he was about 1 1/2 or so, it's an instant prescription for puking if we give him one. He loves them too so every once in awhile I try again (never after eating or drinking water because he'll definitely throw up and then he loses all the food and water, too!) but it's just too much for him.

Freezing water in a cup seems like a good idea. I wonder if he'll just try to eat the whole cup to get to the ice, though?

We are in control of the cup and allow about an inch of ice
above the top. That way he never gets a chance to eat the cup.
Wow.... Can you believe I never heard of throwing up after Ice Cubes... until now!!!! I really do need to get my head out of the sand once in a while.

I hope Baloo never starts that... Poor babies. He loves an ice cube in the evening. He still loves his cold 1/2 frozen washcloth to throw around....

I think I will try the ice in a cup too. Sounds fun!
My last two boys have thrown-up after eating ice cubes. Nigel gets a small melted down ice cube if it's within two hours after eating. I find if they are half the regular size he won't throw up after. Bella has a cast iron stomach so nothing bothers her. I have no idea why this happens...when he was a pup it didn't bother him.
Archie brings up water if it is to cold, he has it at room or tap temperature and has no issues, if it is from the refridgerator chilled filtered supply he tends to bring it up.

So I am very cautious about even trying ice cubes
Wow, both of my boys love ice cubes and had them before and after drinking water/milk or eating their food. They have not thrown up! (Knock on wood!)

They have thrown up after drinking from the ocean though!
Morgan scarf's down ice cubes like mad and they don't make him barf - water alone can though. the other day I had morgan and puppy in the kitchen and opened the freezer (its on the bottom so dog height) Morgan tries to stick his head in and of course I make him sit for cubes. Well puppy is a good mimic so he sat and got an ice cube as well. Food is his favorite thing! Ice cubes apparently are not food in his book. he spat it out and took another a few times, all the while watching Morgan crack through all the cubes he got. he seemed very disappointed and I think Morgan probably catapulted down a few rungs on the big brother ladder.
Kerry I just saw your pics of Beowulf - man he's gorgeous!! :P
