Ear Infection Gone Wild

My co-worker has a standard poodle that is 8 mths old. This poor baby keeps getting a regular ear infection and becomes a yeast ear infection and then becomes a bacterial & yeast infection with puss. She is spending a fortune on vet bill's and medication. She is now on Prescription Science Diet Z/D. This is a very pampered pooch and the vet is at a loss the reason for the continuous ear infections.

Ok I know somebody out there has some suggestions for here.

HELP!!!!

Harley (our GSD at the Bridge) had one after another after another.

The only thing that kept them at bay was Malaseb ear cleaner and wash.
Most vet's carry it. Unfortunately it took us years to find this product.

We used Panalog (which the Vet fought with me about, he didn't want to use it... It was the final medication... he made us try every other one first, when I was the one saying Panalog all along, and I mean two years!!) to clear us the infection and then the wash as directed during the infection. Once the infection was gone we used the cleanser on a regular basis.
It wasn't until we started using this that they ear infections finally stopped.
We used it a couple times a week. It cleanses the ears and helps keep them dry. The moisture in his ears was a breeding ground for yeast... that and he had deep ear canals and environmental allergies.

I would definitely have your friend try it... It could hurt.... and if anything it may help.
I fought ear infection with Violet for the longest time..years. They where cronic. She went to the Vet often on meds, I was always cleaning her ears. The groomer was always plucking the hair out. We stopped having the hair plucked and we only wash her ears with soap and water on a wash cloth when she has her weekly bath. She has not had an ear infection in a long time.

The best of luck to you.
I went through the same thing with Dancer.

I can't stress enough the importance of probiotics in a dog with this problem...

An earwash that I found worked better than any of the several medications I tried from the vet is homemade, cheap, provides some pain relief, and works FAST.

This ear cleaner works well for yeast problems-

It's helped other dogs with yeasty ears get the problem under control.

I think you also have to address the problem nutritionally.
A good quality dog food without corn/wheat and probiotics like Stacey mentioned. We went with Eagle Pack Holistic Select. It helped Panda get her yeast problems under control.

They might also ask if Malaseb FLUSH (0.2% NOT the 2% products) might be appropriate for treatment of the ears. As Elissa mentioned, Malaseb makes excellent products to address yeast problems. :D

I hope they get the ear problems under control.
I feel for your friends poodle, dam nuisance the constant yeast ear infections.

Been there with Brie, wattle blooming so did her ears, hormonal use to flair them again as well with the yeast. After spending a fortune on prescribed ear drops, ususally needed 2 lots to clear it up all together when her ear errupted finally a vet that I was seeing when she was pregnant gave me a solution that did not cost the earth.

I'm with Pepsi's Mom, Malaseb. Rather then buying the drops, provided there is no perferation that she knows of in the ear drum, you can try this.

Get a bottle of the Malaseb Shampoo, in a bowl put half a teaspoon of Malaseb Shampoo and 1/3 cup warm water, get a syringe fill it up and squirt into the ear to flush it, massage and squish around and then wipe out with cotton wool. Do it twice a day till no more muck coming out of the ear, then you can use this just for maintenace once a week.

Cheaper then the Malaseb drops & the bottle of Shampoo lasts for a heck of a long time and finally after all these years something that has kept my girls ears from erupting and now well under controll with no more problems since this vet put me onto this way of flushing the ears, been over 12 months now and no yeast problems.. :D

Also tell them to MAKE sure the ear canal is free from hair as having it clogged with hair gives the canal a moist enviroment for bacteria to get a hold on and flare. There is lots of ear powders on the market, Bio Groom has a good one and makes it easy then to pluck the hair out just with your fingers and helps keep the ear canal dry. Once all the hair is gone then about once a month they can do that for maintenance to keep the ear hair free and allow it to stay nice and dry and allows the air to get in then. If the ear is really inflammed wait till it has settled down a bit before they try to remove the hair. If the poodle is not use to having the ears plucked then tell them to just puff the powder into the ear and just pull a few hairs at a time then try again the next day till eventually all hair free.

I'd also be looking at the diet too, adding probiotics to help as well and finding out what food they are feeding the poodle and if there is a conection there also with allergies and the ears flaring.

Hope it helps.
