Where can I get a healthy sheepdog for a reasonable price?

Hi,

I live in Brooklyn , NY and cant find anywhere to get an OES at a reasonable price. I just lost my last sheepdog to stomach cancer and I am heart broken yet I cant afford the rediculous prices mnay breeders are asking for. I prefer a dog already housebroken, but will consider a pup if the chemistry is there. Anyone have any ideas where to search?

thanks,
Marc

DITTO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm sorry to hear of your recent loss. Most of us here know just what you have and are going through.

One word: RESCUE!!!

One page to read: 10 Good Reasons to consider an adult dog

The reason a "Reputable Breeder" must charge so much money for their dogs is the tremendous expenses incurred to ensure the best representatives of the breed. They do all sorts of genetic and other health testing, and usually breed dogs that have been shown in the ring to a championship level. That ensures independent 3rd parties (the judges), on several occasions usually in different areas, have examined your dog, compared him or her against all of the other dogs and declared your dog to be the best. Pretty neat, huh? But pretty expensive.

If you are not looking for a top quality, championship lined dog to show, there are many pet OES needing homes. Generally these dogs will not have the same kind of quality lines behind them and may have a couple of issues that the breeders are working towards weeding out of the breed, but they are great sheepies anyway.

My wife and I are on our second rescue. His name is Mulligan, just like a golfer who needs a second chance. Our first guy Jake is in the picture under my name. He rescued us in 1992.

Good luck and please join us here as a member. It's free and we (usually) don't bite.
Rescue is a wonderful option, there are many fairly young sheepies that become available.

I also want to take a moment to talk about "the ridiculous prices" that breeders charge. When you obtain a puppy from a reputable, established proven breeder you are paying for their knowledge and experience. You are also paying for a dog that has a far greater chance of living to a ripe old age without significant health problems. There are no guarantees in life but the odds greatly increase in your favor when you pay the price for a quality dog.

A few years ago I wanted a maltese. I was totally shocked to discover that the going "rate" for a maltese puppy from an established breeder was around $2500.00. I found a lovely women who bred her pet maltese twice a year and sold them from her living room. She was a very nice person and truly loved her dogs but she was not an established "reputable" breeder. I thought I had found myself a deal.

My pup was a bargain price (compared to the going price) but within the first year I discovered he has a congenital knee problem which requires two costly surgeries. We have had one done and are planning on the second before winter. I will have over $5,000 invested in my bargain pup. I would not trade him for anything in the world but for what I have spent in preventable medical costs I could have gotten two dogs with health guarantees.

So when you think about a "resonable" price keep in mind that you get what you pay for.

But, as others have said, Rescue is a great option!!
Marc, so sorry about your loss. Please consider rescue. There are so gems of dogs out there really needing good home. Just ask me, I got one of them!!!

Please let us know how it goes.

Oh yea...welcome to our forum!
Me too!!! I have had pups and rescues. I have one who is in her 4th and last home. There is as we speak someone in the forum trying to rehome her 1 1/2 yr old female in Mo. because the housing is not right for her. They are not all problem dogs. I am sure you can find a wonderful in the rescue. Go to community pages and look at the rescue links in this forum. Hopefully we will her all about your new OES soon! :D
Look in the thread on rescuing a sheepdog. There are a lot of people here who help transport too.
Rescue's a great way to go. All 3 of our dogs were rescue, the last one (Drezzie) was the best ever. But, as has been referenced, she had pretty severe hip dysplasia because she was originally a puppy mill dog. I would not trade one second of her time with us for anything in the world, but it would have been easier on her (health-wise) and us (financially) if her hips had been certified by a reputable breeder.
