anxiety

Barkley recently had a bout of kennel cough. This happened right before we left for our vacation to California. He is usually boarded when we leave town and loves it according to the boarding facility. WE were forced to leave him with friends, including a friend of ours that was able to stay with him in his own home for a few of the eight days. The rest of the time he stayed with my best friend's family. Apparently, Barkley was incredibly anxious, pooped and peed in the house if she would leave him alone etc.
When he was a puppy he had very bad seperation anxiety and had this type of behavior. I was really surprised to hear of this resurfacing in him and felt very badly, as my friend's comment was that our dog needed "therapy".
I'm feeling badly that it was so much work for her and that he was under such stress while he wasn't feeling well.
Has anyone experienced this before when leaving their dogs with anyone?

I'm sorry to hear about Barkley, I hope he is doing better now. Separation anxiety is very common unfortunately in many dogs.

They can react to the stress of being separated from their "pack member(s)" by becoming destructive, barking continuously, or eliminating in the house. You may see personality changes in him as well. He may become aggressive, or shy, he may become depressed and can even make himself sick.

To avoid separation anxiety try:
- Walking your dog in the morning before he eats and again at night.

- When you leave the house make sure not to make a big deal out of it and when you come back ignore the dog for at least 5 minutes or until he is calm!
- Leave for 2 minutes; come back in; praise him, and give him a treat.
- Increase the time to 5 minutes, 8 minutes and so on.
- Do some other things first like taking off your coat and putting the grocery's away before you greet your dog

- Crate train him
- Leave the TV or radio on for him

If you practice this you can get your friends involved too. Take Barkley over to your friends place and leave him for 5 minutes, 10 minutes, half an hour, 3-5 hours, a night, etc. Get him used to their place as well so he will understand that even though you leave him there you will come back. That's all he needs to know!

I hope this helps!

^^Winton's separation anxiety is that bad. We have only boarded him twice, and both times he ended up severely ill. Won't eat, won't drink...foaming at the mouth, lathargic, the second time his liver and kidneys were shutting down....it's tragic.

We got to where we purposefully and diligently expanded his second-layer of herd. We took him with us every time we went to my in-laws, or two other (willing) friends' houses. Eventually he thought of them as part of his family and we started leaving him with them for short increments and lengthened them over time. We've only ever left him with them, and he does OK. The other dogs can go to the boarders and have a great time.
I'm glad Winton is better now, I know how hard it can be. Good job!
Wish we could fix our own anxiety by staying in bed sometimes! We have a bobcat in the woods next to our house that keeps appearing...we have seen it 4 times in the past month and I thought they would only roam at night. This last time Rosie my small TT ran down the meadow at it...anxiety...she came when I called but it sure bothers me that I have to walk them before bed, husband out of town and the weather is stormy...anxiety!!! How do you get rid of a bobcat???
Re bobcat.

Try putting some lion dung down on the border of your yard.
Where do you get lion dung? I do plan to call the fish and wildlife tomorrow...we just went out between rain showers and I took them as far away from woods as I could...Suzi heard something in the woods and acted funny...we hurried and went inside. I would think Suzi is big enough to scare it away but little Rosie must look like prey to a bobcat.

At the zoo I would think! 8)

I have no idea what you should do about your anxiety, sorry. Don't forget that I am a dog trainer so I'm better at figuring out dogs than people!
