growling

Hello fellow Sheepie lovers,
I absolutely love my 4 yr old male Dickens, but I am experiencing some problems that hopefully someone can help me with. If I can't get this fixed I will be forced to find another home for him.
Dickens aggressively growls in 2 situations. One is when he is told no assertively. For example, my wife went out the front door the other day and he growled when she told him that he could not go outside. When I came in the house he then growled at me. It was a little scary and since I have an 18 month old and 4 yr old in the house I cannot afford for him to "snap".
The second situation is when I take him out and he is collared and leashed. Anytime someone gets excited ("oh the shaggy dog") and begins petting him he absolutely loves it. But when either they leave or I pull him away, he begins to aggressively growl at them. This is another scary event to say the least.
Now he is a great dog otherwise, lots of life and energy. Its just those random events that make my wife want to get rid of him now. I have started to come around as well now and am hoping some of you can offer some advice to help us keep him in our family.
Thank you
Michael
