Twiggy Stolen

I came home from work at 4:30pm, put Twiggy outside on her lead in a fenced in back yard. I returned at 6:30pm with her gone and her collar with all her tags cut off her. I called the Police to file a report. They went outside and in the backyard and found a box cutter with remains of Twiggy's collar on it. I contacted Avid which did our microchipping and notified she was stolen.

I am beyond myself right now. Tears, panic attacks, everything you can imagine. I was hoping that maybe I could find some help here. We live in Merrillville, Indiana about 45 minutes away from Chicago. I just don't know what to do.

I hope if someone did steal her, it's just because she is cute and loving and they are going to take good care of her. If that's the case, they will take her to the vet at some point and we will get her back. I hope no one took her for cruel reasons.

I posted her most recent pictures. Prayers and thoughts are very much apperciated right now.

Our thoughts go out to you for a speedy recovery of your loved one!
I'm so sorry to hear this! I used to live in Schererville, right next door, but that was 20 years ago. I will pray for Twiggy's safe return to you.
I'm very sorry to hear about your little girl. All my thoughts go out to you and I hope that she will be returned soon!
OH no! :(

I hope you get your Twiggy back!
My 1st thought are signs, notify the vets around you, any places dogs are sold, and telling your mailman (they see everything and know more about the neighborhoods on their route than anyone!)
Umm, area craiglist and other posting services.
notify area shelters and rescue groups.

:ghug: to you Erin.
Notify the surrounding rescues and shelters. In fact, get the word out to all of the rescues in case someone decides to ditch her further afield - get a good recent pic of her plus relevant stats and the fact that she is chipped and your contact info and e-mail it to all of the rescue contacts - see http://www.oes.org/html/oes_rescue.shtml

She was in a fenced yard, but tied up - did I understand that correctly?Someone may have had an issue with her being tied out, if that was the case, and stolen her feeling they "rescued" her. It's happening more and more and there are organizations that condone this kind of behavior. Could she easily be seen from the road and how are your neighbors? Friendly? If you have any, ask them if they saw anything. And check with your local shelter first thing in the morning.

Make up a flyer with her pic and a reward for information leading to etc. Reward doesn't have to be huge - just enough to catch people's attention. Flyers at all the vet's offices in as big a radius as you can manage, plus all of the shelters. Then start monitoring Petfinder if you don't get her back quickly. Also monitor your local craig's list.

What a nightmare. I'm so sorry.

You have been given great advise. I am so sorry you are going through this. I pray for a safe and quick return of Twiggy. Please keep us updated.
Prayers being said for the fast and safe return of Twiggy. I'm sorry you have to go through this.
OH MY ..... I can only imagine the panic and fear you must be feeling. I am sorry that someone has done this. Please let Twiggy show up soon! Keep us posted.
I am so sorry! Another suggestion might be to contact the radio station and Schools that are in session.
Sending hugs to you! Please keep us posted!
We are so shocked to hear this news. Hope that someone brings Twiggy back soon!
That is so horrible! I hope you get your Twiggy back soon. Don't give up. I know a person whose dog was stolen and recovered a year later. The dog was not chipped. She was randomly taken to the same Vet as she had been with her rightful former owner. The Vet recognized the dog arranged for the true owner to come and reclaim her.

Hoping for a happy update. . .
My prayers are with you for a speedy recovery. I'm somewhat familiar with Merrillville, having appraised several motels there many year ago.
I am so sorry this has happened and I am sharing your feelings of panic and dread.

I hope the police are taking it seriously and on the lookout for you, too.
I really hope you get her back.
cant begin to imagine what your going through
We in the uk are keeping all paws and fingers crossed for Twiggy's safe return home x
I do hope that Twiggy is returned soon...
I am so sorry :(

Can you post where you are located so, we can
all keep our eyes open.

Good Luck!
So sorry to hear about Twiggy! I'm in Chicago area. Let me know if you want me to cross post this and I'll send to the Brittany rescue I volunteer with and all those people work with other rescues in the area. Plus if you have any other photos (full shots showing her markings) that would help. You can pm me.

Our thoughts for her quick and safe return.

Sue
where is Merrillville, which state. I am posting to all my lists but need to know the state.
Barb
Merillville is in Indiana. About 45 minutes southeast of Chicago.
Thank you so much everyone for your kind wishes and thoughts.

I wanted to give an update, even though I sadly don't have much to update.

I live in Merrillville, Indiana which is Northwest Indiana about 45 minutes from Chicago.

I have contacted Avid and listed her as stolen, I've called about 30 humane societies in the area and 20 some vets to notify them of Twiggy and her disappearance. I've also contacted both local papers in hopes that they may run an article in an effort to inform the public that this type of thing can happen. Hopefully I will hear from them and get some publicity that way.

I actually slept on the back porch last night because if she happen to come back, I wanted to make sure I heard her scratching at the door :(

I have a lot of guilt right now. We recently moved from South Bend, Indiana and lived on a busy street. I would never let her outside unsupervised. We moved to Merrillville to a nice quiet neighborhood and I got too comfortable and would start leaving her out while I ran short errands. I just never thought something like this would happen.

The police report has been filed and I'm really running out of ideas. I want to offer a reward and hang up fliers, I will get to that tomorrow as it's storming right now. I miss her so much.
I am so sorry this happened... you must be agonizing over this.

Something you might consider doing tonight...
Post ads with pictures on the Craigslists in Indiana and Illinois. There are many people who read these ads and it might give you more people searching for her or people who might just happen to spot her. It could leave you open to unscrupulous people so be careful how you word the ad and the info you share.

http://geo.craigslist.org/iso/us/il

I hope you both will be reunited soon.
:ghug:
Just a word of caution: BE CAREFUL in dealing with people responding to rewards ads. BE SOMEWHAT SKEPTICAL and keep your guard up, and DON'T GO ALONE.
I am so sorry about your little Twiggy, hoping for the best
Devastating! Sheepdogs are such a rarity that I can only hope SOMEONE recognizes Twiggy. We have a free cable channel here in Louisville - it is a long shot, but you might think about putting her picture on your free local cable channel. We are all thinking of you and sincerely hope you find Twiggy safe and sound.
You have my prayers. I have a lot of hope that your dog will be back, and DO NOT BLAME YOURSELF!!! I bet you have a kid in the neighborhood that wanted your dog and knew he was friendly.

I happen to live down the street from the county dog warden here, and we know each other well. We sit on my porch, drink beer, and he tells me how he finds pets. I don't think you could find a person that knows more about this than him. He is a regular Ace Ventura. He would tell you, this is a good time to meet your neighbors. I suggest you find your equivalent guy with that position in your town.

My humble guess is you will find your dog in a yard in your neighborhood with a kid that told his parents "he found him". Keep your eyes open and post many, many posters in the parks and dog walking routes, then look for where the posters are torn down quickly. The person tearing down those posters is the person with something to hide and will practically give you his ROUTE. That is where you will find your dog!

If they left the tags and the knife, they are not as sophisticated as dog nappers. They would take the evidence and send the tags with a ransom note. And if they wanted to be cruel, they could find an easier target with a stray on the street or one that was not as risky as hopping a fence and getting your dog. So, that is what gives me hope for this scenario. I hope it helps you stategize. Don't blame yourself and be a victim, put that energy into getting mad and going after your dog. There is a lot of reason to hope for the best.

Good Luck,

Dave
cant imagine that happening. prayers and thoughts go out to your family and a safe return of Twiggy. please continue to keep us posted.
Our thoughts are with you. We've all got fingers and paws crossed here in Winnipeg for the safe return of your dear friend.

A colleague just had a similar experience and her dog was found a short time later by a kind soul who found him wandering in the street. She believes a neighbour "set the dog free" as he'd commented before that he hated the idea that a dog be tied up outside. She was only gone for fifteen minutes and rarely left him outside.

Anyway, it was a nightmare at the time, but he's home safe and sound. So we're all wishing for a speedy happy ending for you.

Take care. I cannot begin to imagine just how awful you feel. We're all keeping you and Twiggy in our hearts.

Tracie, Portage, and (evil) Hudson
WOW, how TERRIBLE. I am so sorry. Keep us posted.
I am praying for Twiggy's safe return. I can't even imagine how you feel. Please keep us posted!
Oh no! I truly hope that Triggy is found. Please keep us posted.

I was getting ready to cross post from the Chicago group's notification

I can't even imagine how difficult this is for you!!! How horrible! I can't think of anything to suggest that people here haven't already done. Perhaps, if you have a free community newspaper, they'd do an article on it and run Twiggy's photo?

I pray for you and your Twiggy to be happily re-united!
I have seen Twiggy posted on a few forums!
I hope twiggy makes it home soon...
I am so sorry! :(
This is such a nightmare! We are all praying for a fast return. I can't even imagine how you feel.
Another update but not much of one.

My Mom and I have made a flier up and we plan on walking the neighborhood today and tomorrow handing them out and placing them in mailboxes. After being a bit more calm about the situtation and listening to the advice and thoughts of people on the board and other boards, I do believe that this was just some teenager or kid who has taken her and she's in the neighborhood somewhere. I forgot who stated this, but if it was a professional I doubt they would have left the box cutter and her collar.

I have contacted both local papers in an effort to see if they would run a story and have not heard yet.

I think with the fact she was taken on a weekend and so many places are closed or have limited hours during the weekend that it's really delayed things. I'm hoping that I will get a call this week from a shelter or from Avid saying they have found her.

I have spoken to quite a few people and they've told me, I have to live right now like she's not coming back. As heartbreaking as that is, I do think it's sound advice. I can't just sit and wait, if she comes back and is returned, that's amazing and wonderful but I know deep down it could be months if not a year.

Part of getting back to life is the fact that my husband and I were planning on adding another sheepie to our family this fall. The day this happened, I sobbed that I never wanted another dog again. Now that 90% of the crying has subsided and I'm a bit calmer, I have tried to few all this with a clearer head and decided to go along with our original plan. Hopefully Twiggy will be home before we welcome the new puppy or at the very least, there soon after we get him or her.

If I had it my way, we'd get her back end of story but I have to be more realistic that there is a large possibility we won't.

She was covered by our homeowners insurance but I am going to wait at least a year before I file anything on that.

I want to thank everyone for their concern and thoughts and I hope you continue to keep us in your thoughts and prayers.
Be careful about putting things in mailboxes-- you're not supposed to do that. Put them on people's doors, similar to how you get pizza fliers and stuff like that that way you won't get in any postal trouble.
I wouldn't wait a year to file a claim with your insurance, they will deny for lack of timely notification. I would call them today. You can report the claim without filing for payment.
The awful things people will do. I have had a dog taken too, a very long time ago, but it is devastating just the same. It was some young adult types who the girl thought my dog was cute (Patrick O'Mally was his name and he was an Irish Setter) and her boyfriend took him to give to her. I only found him and got him back by chance. They wanted money too, and when I said that I would go to the police they backed off the money thing. This was in the 70's and they didn't chip dogs back then or if they did it was for the show dogs only.

All I can say is keep at it and continue to look. Who ever mentioned that it was not a professional job, is probably right. I wouldn’t doubt that it was someone who thought your dog was cute and wanted her. I looked at your photos and I must say, she is one cute little girl and well loved and adored. I will pray and keep you and her in my thoughts for her safe return.

Here is hoping that she is back with her mommy and daddy real soon!

I saw a post that an OES came into the shelter in Indiana on another list...praying it is Twiggy so she can go home. :lmt:
i just received an email from lady in Indianna that has been emailing me all weekend.

Hi Ali,

The shelter cannot locate a chip on her but we think this is definitely the dog! From the description the shelter gave me it matches the picture that you sent. I have e-mailed this Pat Binkley but had no response from her!

Kivalina....Quality

Let's hope!!!!
gosh I hope it's her! but to some people, all sheepdogs look alike and jeeze, how many of us have had somebody say, "that is the same dog as in the movie Beetoven!", or "Look honey, its a Standard Poodle", or "is that an Afgan?". So stay stong until you see for yourself if its' her.
Was it Twiggy?????

I am so anxious. Praying it's her!!!!!
Has "eehigy" been on since Ali posted??? Does anyone have a phone number to get in contact with her? I hope she logs on soon....praying Twiggy will be back home very soon!!!!!!
still praying for the best possible outcome! Please let this be Twiggy, and let him be well!!!!
Oh Pleeeeeease let this sheepie at the shelter be Twiggy so that she can get back home where he belongs!!!!!!!!!!!

:? :? Just checking to see if it WAS Twiggy..... Anyone heard anything??
Well, Twiggy's story has made the newspaper:

Link to Twiggy's story
Since the police are on the case could they not just get fingerprints from the knife. I know this is probably over kill for a family pet. Cost benefit issue. But, If the person that took her had a record, it may be a quick way to find her.
The Humane Society of Hobart, Indiana does impound for Merrillville, Indiana. From the photos that were forwarded - I believe we have "twiggy" at the shelter. She was picked up by Merrillville Animal Control (and 'no' lines of communication do not always work"). . . . through the efforts of a few Internet people the "call for help" reached me. . . . .have the owner contact the Humane Society of Hobart at 219-942-0103 to learn the terms of release (current rabies and current city dog license and a small impound fee due in cash to HS of H). . . . Thanks for the good work that will enable us to return "twiggy" to her owner(s).

Has Twiggy been found??? Was that her? Oh please let it be her.
Please please please let that be Twiggy!
I so hope Twiggy is returned - how horrible!
Hello everyone!

Sorry it took so long to reply, I was at work and then went to my Mother's house which has become command central since Twiggy went missing. I am praying to God that the animal they have is indeed Twiggy. The shelter opens at 10:00am tomorrow and we will be there right when they open. I just feel horrible if it is her sitting in a cage all night :(

I want to thank everyone who has helped us with this whole terrible ordeal. I am hoping it is is her and we can learn from this terrible instance but also put some of it behind us and get back to trips to the dog park and naps in bed together.

I will update as soon as I can tomorrow morning!
Erin we are all praying that it is Twiggy! Look forward to hearing from you in the morning!!!!!
Hugs to you!
I hope this is your Twiggy!!
If it is and she is in the kennel, at least she is safe. :D

Crossing all paws that is Twiggy!
