Does your sheepdog bark?

My old dog who was German Shepard/Schnauzer mix was a huge barker. Laika barely ever barks. Never when someone comes to the door. Only time is when she wants the cats to play. Are sheepdogs known to be quite dogs?

I love it! I have to say. That was one of my biggest worries since my last one was a big time barker.

Two of my three OES are barkers - at least at the door, mail and when in play. oooooh, and at cats! One of them (my girl) rarely barks.
Tonks barks alot; Luna not so much. Grownig up, our Sheepies only barked if someone was actually trying to break in! they were so mellow....
Bailey barks like a maniac when someone comes to the door or is outside our house. Other than that, he's very quiet.
Clyde only barks when he wants to play or just wants attention from Bear and then, it's relentless. Nothing will shut him up. He also gets the crazies when we go to bed at night and likes to do a run of about 3 solid minutes of barking. Other than that, he's quiet. Bear's my noise barker.
Marley barks at other dogs, at strangers, at strange cars in the neighbors driveway...

Morgan barks when playing, when he wants to play, when he wants to come in, when he wants to go out, when he is in, when he is out, when he wants to eat, but actually not all that much :)

Between them I think they have all the bases covered

my Max used to only bark if there was a reason to bark - like we were under attack :)
bark, bark, bark, bark.....lol..yeah you could say that panda barks ...a lot
Our first sheepie, Quincy, rarely barked. He never barked at our doorbell, or people walking by our house. He really only got vocal while playing, and of course when we had a treat and asked him to "speak". :) (Quincy wasn't 115 lbs by turning down food.....)

I just had to get up and find Oscar, because, you guessed it, he was barking! Yeah, the deaf one. Oscar will look out the window and bark at nothing I can see - so I have to find him, touch him to get his attention, and then sign "good boy", then "quiet". We live on a golf course, and every now and then he will go crazy at a golfer. Can't quite figure out why some golfers require the full court press and most will go by without even so much as a glance from Oscar.

Oscar also barks when he wakes up and everyone has left the room. I used to wake him all the time so he could track me in the house, but I am constantly moving around, and I gave up. Now when he wakes up alone, he barks and waits for me or my hubby to come find him, and then he goes right back to sleep. Who has who trained around here? 8)

Violet is not much of a barker. If someon knocks or rings the door bell she will bark. Sometimes she will go out in the backyard and do one bark and wait to see if anyone responds. She hasn't had any luck with the dogs in this neighborhood, but in the old neighborhood they would all chat among themselves.

The funny thing to watch is when the Aussies will go outside and bark and Violet will join them "in the bark" and then she'll stop and look around with a look on her face that says "hey, what are we barking at?" Violet is funny, and sometimes behind the times.
WHAT??? I can't hear you over the barking :D

Annie bacame a barking maniac when we moved into our home about 3 years ago. We actually didn't think she barked when we were in the condo. I guess it was because our place was situated facing a quiet courtyard. In front, we purchased those Pella windows with the blinds so they couldn't part curtains and bark at everyone walking by (we live on a corner). When she's in the yard, she barks at everything she hears or sees through the trees

Fozzie's barking is much more controlled (I'm sure this is because Annie used to bite him when he barked). He sends out an alert bark and then runs away like a little baby so Annie can take over  He also barks a lot at Annie for attention and play time.

Thats so great :D

Oliver only really barks when playing,
or doing the race around the garden as fast as he can for no real apparent reason, bark bark bark about 50 times, the stops dead in front of me
Baloo.... He is like some here...

He barks at the neighbors dog, when our cat is trying to sneak out, when the doorbell rings, when he wants to play, when there is a squirrell in the yard, when the moon is full, when all the stars are aligned just right, when someone has his favorite toy in hand, when anyone gives or gets a hug...
NO JOKE... if you even 'look' like you are giving a hug to someone he will bark and stand in between the 2 people. We have tested it out on lots of different people hugging different people.

THERE IS NO HUGGING HERE unless you are hugging on Baloo. (Or at least he thinks that's the rule! )
No, Tasker rarely barks. The only time he really barks is when he qand Ty are playing "catch me".
George has 3 barks, His play bark which is high and a bit yappy, his bark when he wants attention and then his someone is at the door bark which comes from his boots and can be heard 3 streets away!!

Morgan weighs over 100 lbs and has this high pitched yip when he wants something. it never fails when he does it and we are out some man will turn around and say "that came from him?" they seem both embarrassed for him and offended by it :)
If there's something to herd or at the door... you can add us to the list of maniacs.
All of mine have been barkers, but Jack is by far the most vocal....barking, whining, churtling, guffing. He just has a lot to say.
Does he bark?

Oh yes.

Normally about an inch from your lughole  saying it's time to play

He has his disturbed "RU RU RU" when he senses something.

When he is in that mad sheepie speedway mode, he will be barking at WOOOOOF whilst going absolutely mental running bake and forth.

Interestingly though when he is out on his walks and other dogs can be yapping and barking he is remarkably mute he just stands there sniffing the air wagging his tail!
Dancer barks if she hears or sees someone/something near the house but other than that, no. Sky barks when she is being playful, but not incessantly. Panda doesn't bark at anyone at the door etc, but for some strange reason she barks very loudly, and incessantly when it's time to refill the food and water bowls, and it doesn't matter in the least if they are full already  Stewie barks when he's really excited, like first thing in the morning, or if the other dogs are playing and he's not in on the action. Bree is the worst, she barks for all of the above reasons, and occasionally out of the blue for no reason at all.

LOL - Chewie has that high pitched bark when he is excited too!
I call it his "barking like a girl" bark......poor guy!

He barks to herd anything that moves, or potentially could move.
He barks at things in trees because Maggie the coonhound taught him to.
He barks while running because Simon the basset taught him to.
I'm soooo glad my dog has role models!!!
When Phoebe came to us in Dec. 2006 she didn't bark. Overtime she has gained confidence and will bark at anything moving outside and whenever the doorbell rings. But she is still rather timid. When the doorbell rings, she will run into the front room and let me close the french doors. She jumps up on a chair so she can see out better and barks even louder. I think she feels that the close door keeps her safe.
when in the house Dutch barks if someone comes to the door or if I close her off from where the company is. Outside she only barks when people walk by and as I live on a quiet street it's not to bad :D
obe will bark when playing or when he wants out to use the bathroom. ring the doorbell nothing happens. then comes the barking after they enter. it's the "see me i never get attention, please help... he too has a high pitch play bark and then a big mean dog bark when there is something he does not like.
Now I have a barking episode to laugh about here.

Yesterday evening Foz was in the yard by himself. I had removed Annie because she barks at everything and anything. He lets out these warning barks in a series which means he's protecting the area or us from something. So I go outside to figure out what he's barking at as he really sounded serious. After hear the noise, the hair on my arms actually stood up. I bravely go over to a tree and things move in it (I'm afraid of birds) and then I hear what sounds like low growls and grumbles that would come from a deep chested dog like a pit bull or mastiff.

I tell Fozzie that it's okay and we wait for the next grumble to figure out where this dog might be located on the other side of the fence. I then realize, nope nothing to be afraid of. I think one of the folks behind us was using some very loud pump on their swimming pool
:D Willoughby is pretty good about barking. A low rumble from machinery will trigger a warning bark. He barks loudly when chasing the hose, if I hold it too high for him to catch the water. I try to "shush" him to no avail. Other than that , he has low growlie sounds when his water dish is empty or he wants a cookie that's hiding in my pocket.
SamSun is definitely a barker. He barks at everything! Oh and he did get "Best Barker" at Sheepiepalooza last year. LOL!
Lizzie is a huge barker...Pirate...not so much. He's more the strong, silent type.
Does the sun rise each morning?

Pepsi barks and whines at EVERYTHING!! Birds, noises, Ryan in the pool and well JUST BECAUSE!

Rags enjoys talking to the other dogs in the neighborhood and barking at the birds and cats. She is also a mumbler. Especially when I tell her to be quiet. She gives me "the look" then will lay down and mumble.

Lacey is a follower, if someone is barking, she just joins right in. 99% of the time I don't even think she knows what she's barking about.
Well it is weird how some end up as barkers and other not. At this time Laika is out back in the kennel at work and we have construction workers everywhere. Not a peep (thank goodness) she doesn't whine either. She never cried or barked even her first night with me. It is a nice change from my last dog. She was a crotch barker
beckett NEVER barks....i think it took 3 weeks of having him before i even heard one!!! i didn't even think it was him... its so damn funny when he does i can't help but start laughing....i don't even think its him because it's such a deep loud "big scary bark" and its just little Beckett....hahahaha thank goodness!!
