Boni's got Lyme Disease!!!

I didn't want to believe it when Charlie called me on my last night at home. I was leaving on Thursday morning so we talked on Wednesday. He said he has to tell me something and he will just say it. "Boni has Lyme Disease!"

I got back on Friday and when the boys run up to me, I tried to see if Boni was hurting but he looked totally normal to me. Attacking Lumpi, barking, wiggling his butt, telling me off for leaving him for so long, etc. He was fine!

About a month ago, I was at work with Boni when I turned suddenly and didn't realize he was right behind me and I run into him. He cried, I said sorry and then tried to figure out where he was hurt. First I thought it were his ears but he didn't cry when I touched them. I petted his head, nothing. I checked him everywhere but he wouldn't cry.
The next couple of weeks he would cry every now and then but we couldn't figure out what was hurting him!

While I was at home, Charlie told me the same things and then on my last week at home, he said he figured out that it was Boni's neck that was hurting. He threw a tennis ball and when he tried to pick it up, he cried. The next day, when Charlie got home from work, Boni could hardly get up to greet him and he was limping! That's when he turned around and rushed to the vet with him. They took a blood test and the results came back the next day - Wednesday - that he had Lyme Disease. :(

On Thursday he couldn't move at all, he cried all day even when Charlie wanted to stroke him. He was laying on the sofa all day...Lumpi would go up to him and give him kisses :hearts: :hearts: :hearts: , Charlie would not move from the sofa all day - he took two days off to nurse Boni! :hearts: :hearts: :hearts:

My boys took care of each other so well! :D But of course I do feel bad for not being here when Bon-Bon needed me the most! :(
I am happy he is so much better now but he worried me to death! He is on anti biotic for a month but doesn't have to take any more pain killers.
Our walks are still short but I can see how much he just wants to run and play.
It's been such a tough month...I hope from now it only gets better.

Kata - I'm so glad you caught it. Is he on doxy? See if your vet won't prescribe a longer course of doxy - 1 month seems very short, though you'd think someone in New England would definitely be utd on what's effective, so...who knows? Dig into things a little and see what seems to be common these days before you suggest it. You want to make sure you clear him and doubly sure he doesn't develop Lyme Nephritis.

Been there, done that will Belle, though it was four years ago, so maybe the protocol has changed.

Hugs to the boy. Never a dull moment :?

Hi Kata,

So sorry to hear about Prof Boni. Hope he is feeling
better on the medication.

One word of caution-

Our Bogart is currently being treated for Lyme disease with
Doxycycline. About 10 days into the treatment, he woke up suddenly
at 2 am panting and clearing his throat. His paws were red hot,
nose hot and dry and appeared to have a fever.

He also started a slight nosebleed. He improved with water,
and cooling his paws down. We ended up at the Vet ER
and his platelelt count was low.

Our vets feel in addition to Lyme he had another tick bourne
disease ==all are treated with doxy.

We had our 3 rd platelet count yesterday, and the plt count
is improving. The nosebleed /fever are gone. His
energy level is now good.

So please carefully monitor Boni, we were doing great on
the doxy until this sudden episode. The Lyme was
scarey, but the added TBD was beyond frightening.

Also, the greenie pill pockets are a blessing, he has taken
every dose and asks for his medication.

Big hugs to Boni from Bogart :ghug:

Poor Boni :( . After he gets better can he have the lyme vaccine? I give it to my young guys because they tramp the woods in northern MI and it's one less thing to worry about.

The only dog I've ever owner who has ever gotten the lyme vaccine is the only dog who ever came down with lyme...

Thankfully her symptoms were from natural exposure, which can usually be treated, and not from vaccine induced lyme, which cannot.

The vaccine is of somewhat questionable use and not without risks, so you have to weigh the risks vrs benefits carefully and never presume they are protected just because they are vaccinated.

The vaccine is only good for about six months, so if you do give it, you have to get the timing right to get maximum coverage, or vaccinate twice a year.

I hope Boni gets well soon! My mom's dog had Lyme disease and he was good as new after the treatment so I am hoping the same outcome for Boni. What a drag to be sick. . . I am glad he is getting such good care from everyone.
Kata -

I really hope that Boni is feeling better and responding to the treatments. It's so hard when one of the babies is sick. Lyme is a nasty illness.
Kata sending sheepie hugs for Boni.

Get well soon sweetie. :ghug:
Boni's been doing a lot better. We are going to the vet tomorrow for a check up. He is still on Doxycycline 4x a day though.

We are having Lumpi tested as well and then have both of them vaccinated. Kristin, thanks for the advice, next time we are going to have them vaccinated in the Spring - do you think that would be the right time? I don't want to over vaccinate them either if you know what I mean.

I'm so sorry about Bogart! How is he doing?
We went to the vet yesterday and Boni is doing great! :go: We also had Lumpi checked and he doesn't have Lyme Disease but they both got their first vaccinations. We'll have to go back in the next couple of weeks for a boost and after that they only get one once a year in the Spring.

We can finally getting back to normal and going back to herding on Sunday!!!!

we don't vaccinate our adult dogs for anything but rabies and lyme. in this area its well worth it. We have them done in December and January though when they have their annuals. I guess next year we can change that. we own a wing in the new vet hospital anyway I think. At least I told the vet exam rom number one needs a plaque that says the Marley room :?
