Destructive puppy!

Hi everyone,

How do I deal with my puppy Oscar eating everything in front of him??? From stones, shoes, mud (his favourite) underwear and even my mom's wooden back door has now a piece missing! He is on a path of destruction and its beginning to become a nightmare visiting other people's homes!

Also he's become a bit of a telly addict! :o Which is quite funny really

Ive become a bit obsessed with bathing him, how often should a puppy be washed? He's almost four months now.

Move things in your house out of his reach. Can you get a behaviour spray, to spray on the door etc. it has got a nasty taste and they stop trying to bite whatever you spray it on. As for stones etc. try to keep his head up when walking outside. I know it is really hard we have a dog who thinks she is a dustbin.
I have only bathed Summer twice, she is 13 months old. I just dont believe in bathing dogs unless they need it. But, that might just be me.
oh.... ive bathed oscar every week since i got him, i really must stop but he looks sooo adorable when he is clean and fluffy.
Thanks for the advice, must look into the spray xx
When Heart came to me she was just like Oscar...eating EVERYTHING in sight...she always had a piggy face...so I bathed her very often..about once a week ...and you are right...they do look so cute...all soapy and wet...........AND ..............all dried and fluffy!!!!!!

I miss those days.....they go sooo quickly

(she is 13 months now...and still likes to dig with her face...although not as often as when she was a baby...  )
Val, do you still bath her that often or will the phase pass? im just sooo into him since i got him, basically my life revolves around him!

Is that a bad thing? :?
I used to bathe Tonks and Luna weekly as well. Now at almost 9 months old, we can stretch it to almost 10 days without a bath...

Seriously? they get SO dirty in that amount of time, I couldn't go longer without bathing them, and still be comfortable hugging and cuddling them. Tonks is what I like to call a "poop roller". If she can find it, she rolls in it. sigh. Luna just gets filthy when Tonks tackles her over and over and over.... Puppy play and the outdoors are a combination that simply does not result in clean dogs.

I was really careful when I chose my bathing products, so as to not over dry their skin or fur. Frequent washing with your basic shampoos might run that risk. I really like the result I get with the Mr. Groom products, the Bio-Groom ones, and of course, Chris Christiansen. Chris Christiansen even has one called "Day to Day" that can be used daily without the risk of over-drying.

Everyone always comments on how nice my girls look; so much so that grooming them (including bathing) has become an addiction for me. I love when people say how good they look and feel. And the girls love the attention too. Heck; when they get dirty now, they go and sit in the tub, as if asking for me to wash them!
I know, i got a special shampoo off the vet for oscar so i feel its justified when i bath him (like its doing him good). Everyone stops me in the street too to pet him and fuss over him, which he loves. and i know its ok for him to roll in the mud because he's a puppy and thats what puppies do, right? 8)

Exactly; the only thing I stop is the poop rolling; every other kind of dirty play is pretty much okay in my book. They DID find a nasty mud puddle once that I pulled them out of. Red Georgia clay is very unforgiving in white fur!
lol.

The joys of it :o
I seriously love the products I listed above; if you want to try the Chris Christensen; this is a nice way to do it:

get the "Day to Day" one. You won't regret it! AND the addict in me loves all the different steps! The results are so great!!!
Hi Helen oscar is probably teething hence the chewing everything in range. It should settle when the teething is over in the meantime do be carefull especially with stones outside as they can cause problems if swallowed. Give him plenty of chew toys, even a raw marrow bone to chew on and when you see him chewing on something inappropriate then stop him and give him something he can chew on. Pain this stage when the new teeth are breaking through.

Bathing not so good all over so often, groom him and just bathe his face and feet and undercarriage when he is a grub bub. Do all over only a couple of times a year unless they are really dirty or muddy.

Mine get an all over twice a year.

TV well we have square eyes here too with our sheepies, they love animals on TV

Summer has just been watching Ricky Gervais on tv trouble is there was a lion and a lioness on and they were mating. She sat there watching until they disappeared!
specific teething toys can help too. I think Nylabone makes some you can toss in the freezer. Alot of folks (like my vet and our local holistic retailer) don't recommend a real bone with puppy teeth; as the teeth can break. Why this is a problem, if they are only going to fall out later, I do not know....
Thank you so much, that picture is sooo cute! I love it :D

If he is chewing things he shouldn't be chewing, you need to replace that item with something acceptable (I suggest a Nylabone) & give lots of praise when you do the replacement. Limiting it to just a few items is best & easiest for the pup to understand. My dogs don't know there is anything else out there but Nylabones! I used to give steribones until Mariah cracked one & swallowed a decent sized piece. Also, if the item is moveable, move it up out of the pups way! ALL my waste baskets are either behind doors or up.

As for bathing, my dogs are bathed once every 6-8 weeks. Show dogs get their whites bathed before shows also. If he becomes dirty inbetween, you can use something like self-rinse to clean the area (rear, chin, feet etc.) Our puppies get baths more frequently of course before they go to their new homes. Living as a litter they just get dirtier.

Ha ha how funny
Raw Bone is one of the best things to give them when loosing the baby teeth and when the new ones are starting to break through the gums.

We had a problem with "Syd" hard bikkies or chew toys did not help loosen up his baby canine and I was just about at the stage of taking him to the vets to have it pulled as the new canine was well down and the baby one was not budging. Marrow bone did the trick.

If baby teeth don't come away at the right time when the new ones are sprouting it can throw out there entire bite by displacing the new teeth coming down.

Never heard of anyone saying not to give a bone at this stage, most recommend a good big raw bone to get there teeth around and help at this stage.
losening the puppy teeth was never a problem for us; they would do that on each others' heads!!!!

I wish I was kidding; they would play, and that would escalate to a fight. I was so horrified by the blood I'd see on both of thier heads, until i realised they were knocking out thier own teeth in thier skirmishes, and then knawing one another on the head with thier bloody gums. They'd finish up, and there'd be teeth all over the floor....

People kept telling me "Puppies swallow thier teeth; you'll be lucky to find one." I've got nearly a dozen of them, collected from the floor after their fights.
