Brown mouth ...

Hi all, and greetings from the Netherlands!

Our 8 month old puppy has a very stained brown mouth area and throat. He does like to lie with his chin on the ground, but I can see no other reason for it. He also enjoys resting his chin on his right leg so that is also brown now too. does anyone know why this staining occurs? He had lovely white fur there when he was smaller. And how can I make it look a bit nicer!? Would soap work? Or would that irritate him? Thank you. I groom him every day with brushing etc. and he quite enjoys that.

Sheepies always have brown beards! There is some chalk you can use ..someone will be on soon to tell you. I sometimes stand Summer in the garden with a bowl of warm water and use baby shampoo, but to be hones it doesnt make much difference.
She is also white round her "girly" bits and I have noticed that is staining.. from wee I suppose!

Have we seen any photos?

Couple things here.....he could be what is called a "wet mouth". They tend to secrete a bit more saliva & sometimes due to mouth/lip sturcture it come out rather than staying in the mouth. Short of contantly drying the mouth area or surgery there really isn't too much you can do. If not a "wet mouth" it could possibly just be normal saliva or wetness that never gets a chance to dry (such as getting drinks all the time). A few things I have found that help in this area are: 1.Drying the chin area with a hair dryer. 2. Washing the chin area with Dawn dishwashing liquid on a regular basis, rinsing & drying it completely (tends to cut thru the grease & food that may accumulate there too). 3. Give 3 tums in the morning & 3 tums in the evening. This cuts the acid in their tummies & the saliva that does get out tends not to be as stong & stain the fur as much.
If they are a dribbly dog then hard to keep the beard white, I always wipe the beard after food or drink with a hand towel.

There is lots of products on the market that can help keep the area whiter but most if already really stained take awhile to do a slow fade on the beards.

I pack the beard with potato flour (Starch) when a bit goopy and then just brush it out, it dries the beard and away comes the goop as you brush it out. I also wash the beard each week religously and dry it throughly with a hair dryer, if left damp seems to cause a yellowing effect.
Some dogs are worse than others about this. And some of it does have to do with food. Our first, Merlin (now at the rainbow bridge) had a stained beard almost all of his life until he was quite an old fellow who lived on chicken and rice almost exclusively: magically, his beard was much whiter.

Sophie, who has an atypical OES coat, has a fairly white beard: she doesn't get dirty much at all, partly because she avoids puddles, and partly because she just doesn't get a dirty face eating the same kibble as Sherman and Archie, who frankly have messy beards.
Please check Edy's website for suggestions on whitening that beard:

I had to smile to myself last night. My nephew popped in, and Summer has never seen him before, so she went mad and weed on the floor. So we put her in the garden for a while. I let her in and she was calmer but my nephew was sort of looking for somewhere to wipe his hand after he had been petting her.(He had his work suit on!) I just get used to dribbly chins and dog hair..
LOL! "Oh it's just water, drool, left over kibble and maybe a little pee from cleaning herself." That would have really bothered him
Archies beard can be quite messy, not only food but the mud at the base of riverside reeds and rushes - yeuk - stinky too!

I wash his beard with a squirty bottle with very weak washing up liquid solution, I don't get to paranoid about it.

I clean his beard to remove accumulated goop the colour is a side issue, as long as his skin isn't sore or irritated I live with it.

He wipes his soggy doggy chin on my thighs when sitting anyway!
In between washing the little piggy, I regularly use a waterless shampoo with a whitener...you just spray it on, let it sit, and towel it off. I seems lighten her up.

I have used a thinning shears to remove the brownest hairs and it doesn't effect the total look of her beard.
