Lurecoursing

A couple of weekends or so ago the little girls and I met up with Sunny (Lucali) and their uncle Luca to go lurecoursing. Sunny's fiance, Will, took the following pictures of the little girls. Luca's are even better, as in much more dramatic, which stands to reason (if you've ever met him, you know why    )

But a preview of the fine sport of chasing a mechanically operated plastic bag around a big field, OES style:

Mace at the start.

And she's off!

Cornering, heading for the home stretch ("Gonna bag me a baggie!!!"):

Not to be outdone, Ms Sybil takes a run at it:

Yes, it really is all that!

I'm torn as to whether or not I should be proud of my dogs chasing a plastic bag on a string around.   Well, actually, there was some rabbit fur there too for the more discriminating lure coursing connoisseur, so perhaps that was the draw.

Bottom line, if you have a dog with a lot of prey drive, this might be a fun activity for them. I see a career here for Mandy's Suzi, should she flunk out of agility. No live rabbits though. Sorry, Suz.

Though only sighthounds can compete, there are fun events here and there that are open to all breeds. It's a great workout and thrilling to watch.

beautiful photos! the one of Mace cornering and the way Sybil stretches out! Amazing.
I saw this being done at Purina Farms at their Canine Carnival and I have to admit even I found the plastic bag on a string fascinating. I guess it is the same reason a cat likes playing with a piece of yarn you dangle in front of them: the movement.

It looks like total fun for the dogs and your dogs look like they are having a great time.

I wonder if my guy would be swift enough to figure it out. :lmt:
WILL HAVE TO TRY THIS!!!!!!!!!!!
Looks like the next session at the place around here isn't until September 1. So we will be waiting until then. Suzi is all excited though. She is practicing by chasing all of the small animals out of the yard!
ive seen it on tv with either jack russels or weinerdogs....i think panda would totally get into that!!

how did you find that ou t- what web search did you do?
We did it when Chewie was a puppy - at Stocktoberfest in Lake Geneva (by the WI/Il state line). Even Simon the basset had a blast. I think the operator wasn't expecting such speed from Simon at the start - he got the bag!

Anthony's sister found it while looking for dog swimming. The only other one I found was with the local Ibizan club and they thought the idea was a bit weird but said I could come if I wanted to. :?
I admit that I thought about this for Gar but ruled it out. Although I KNOW he would be great at this my thinking was that it would increase his prey drive. We have a big enough problem with this at the dog park and I thought this would increase the problem.

SIGH...Kristine, is my thinking wrong?(wouldn't be the first time)

Join the club

I'm not sure. My inclination is it would be better to give him an appropriate outlet for his chasing instinct. I don't think it will ultimately make him any less inclined to chase small dogs, though.

If you decide to give it a try, check out http://www.lurecoursingfanatics.com/

They're right down in Somers (Kenosha county) so pretty accessible for North IL/So WI people. Let me know if you decide to go at some point (they have a regular schedule) and if the girls and I are off that weekend, we'll join you! They're about a 15 minute drive for me.

funny I was thinking Morgan would be great at it as he would probably think the bag was loaded with COOKIES!!!!! I never thought about making the association with small animals.

That's what I figure is about the only thing that would ever convince Belle to lower herself to being seen chasing a plastic bag. Just let her see me stuff some ham in the bag and it's off the races!!
