Buddy ate Carpet

Hi all,

Buddy is frightened to death of fireworks, so at this time of year I give him some tranquilizers the vet prescribed during the week. I only give him 1/2 a pill because it seems to affect him more than the vet thought it would (I was supposed to start out with one pill and go up to three total for one dose). The half pill calms him down some, but allows him to move around and be semi-normal. One full pill will sometimes put him out and make it hard for him to walk. He appears drunk... it's hard to watch, so I rarely give him a full pill unless he's really freaked out.

Thursday when I was at work, Buddy ate a 2 ft strip of nylon carpet (about 3.5 inches wide)! He's never done this before and I suspected it was a combination of the meds, firecrackers going off in the neighborhood and a small t-storm that blew through. Buddy has had a rough time this past couple of weeks with t-storms/firecrackers.

I threw away a ball of carpet, never realizing that he ate a bunch of it. He threw up twice yesterday (no carpet... just food) and I thought it was just nerves. This morning (Sat) I woke up to the sounds of him throwing up some more. This time it was a bunch of the carpet and last night's dinner. He's laying outside now (won't come inside the house). I know he's still groggy from last night's dose of tranquilizers as I had to give him a full pill to get him through the night of fireworks.

I'm afraid there is more carpet in him. Is it an automatic trip to the vet when your dog eats nylon carpet? Do I wait to see if he gets more passed/thrown up? It is 5:00 a.m. here on a Saturday, so my vet won't be in for another 4 hours.

Thanks for any advice you can give.

Yes, I would take him in.
The carpet can easily cause a blockage. Also the nylon threads can wrap around his intestines and cut off the circulation to that part of his bowels. This can be fatal.
They will probably do an xray to see what is in him and where it is.

I have one that occasional shreds carpet and I make sure I throw any pieces into my covered kitchen garbage that they can't get at.

Please keep us posted how Buddy is.
I would call the vet as soon as he gets in, unless Buddy begins to show distress or starts throwing up more than just his food and or carpet---then on to an emergency clinic (or at least a call).

Heart spent all night in the bathroom, wrapped around the toilet  It seems that if there are storms, loud noises, she heads straight for the bathroom.

I had a Beardie that was so terrified of fireworks, she had to be on meds for 1 day before and 1 day after. It seemed to calm her-- I just didn't like to 'dope' her up but it was the lesser of the two evils.

Keep us posted on Buddy's condition. Hopefully, all the carpet is out of system now and he will begin to feel better.

I am sure you will get more suggestions here..This is the place to be for advice!!!!

Good Luck!!!!
Thanks. I took him in. He's running a fever (doc thinks it is from the carpet... nasty stuff lives in carpet). So he is on anti-biotics and now will be on a soft food diet w/mineral oil and yogurt for the next few days.

He started having diarrhea just before I took him down. The doc thought the mineral oil would help break down the carpet and grease things up to help pass it (yuk). So it is watch and wait to see how it goes. Poor guy... to be running a fever on top of all of this (and it is hot out... and no a/c inside).

Thanks again!
Poor Buddy! :( I hope he feels better soon.

I hope the vet is quite concerned...........and that Buddy gets better.
We're in the same boat here. We're waiting for whatever our little guy ate to pass through. He had been throwing up right after eating for three meals, and I called the vet to see if he should come in that day, or if it could wait until the next (he had a regularly scheduled appointment for the next day). I was shocked when the tech who had answered the phone came back from checking with the vet and said, "He wants you to bring Hudson in right now." He was worried about a blockage and took it VERY seriously. (And I'm thrilled that he did.)

I've seen the x ray (after the barium that Hudson thought was downright yummy), and it's cued right up to come out (made it through most of the trickier parts without incident). I won't feel ok until it's out (and I'm insanely curious about what it turns out to be). He's never out of our sight (since he chews everything) and I can't imagine what he got into.

So, our woofs and wishes are with Buddy that he can soon (literally) put all this behind him. We're hoping tonight's the night for Hudson, too.

Take care both of you...
I hope Buddy and Hudson will be ok soon. What kind of mix is buddy? I can see he is OES/? He is a very cute boy, and I hope he feels better soon.
Good thoughts for Hudson... and thanks everyone for your thoughts for Buddy. Hopefully everyone will be better after today.

I think Buddy is doing better... no vomiting since yesterday morning and he had a little soft movement this a.m., although nothing else since. At least it wasn't diarrhea.

My vet didn't want to jump the gun and do the whole barium series right away. But I'm going to call her tomorrow if he doesn't have any more poops before then. Granted, I can't get as much mineral oil into him as she'd like, but I have been successful with tuna oil/mineral oil mixed into his food. He actually likes that awful mixture (yogurt, tuna/oil, mineral oil, yams and half a Mighty Dog can of food). So maybe all is well. The vet thought it'd be 2 days for his stomach to settle down. Day 1 is over... starting day 2.

Thanks so much.

Buddy's mom was 100% OES and his father is of unknown origin (although a good fence jumper :) ). I think his father was a Scottish Deerhound as there was a family of them over on the next block running free. His mom's mom didn't know for sure though... but he has the jawline of a deerhound and the shorter fur (he never gets as fluffy as an OES... 3 inches max in length).

Oh... the post above this one is from me. I forgot to log in when I posted... lol.
He is very cute...I hope he is better soon!
Yay, good news!

After they have the runs, there will usually be reduced output (little or none) for a day or so, so don't get too anxious right away!
Best wishes for speedy recoveries for both Buddy and Hudson

Ditto that. I hope they both pass their goods soon.
I'm getting a little worried. Probably an over active imagination... but Buddy won't eat his dinner and is just kind of blah tonight. I'm sure that he's still fighting the fever, which would knock me out too I guess. Still only the one small movement this a.m. I was hoping for more tonight.

I'll see how he does with breakfast. If he won't eat that, then I'm going to call the vet. :(
I'd call the vet again. Yarn and string can do serious damage to the intestines.

It's just best to be certain he doesn't have any obstruction.
How is he today???????
We're just checking in. Hudson passed his "treasure" yesterday. It's hard to tell for sure, but it looks like the stringy stuff that is on the back of sheets of tree bark. And we have several wood piles in our yard, so that's quite possible. Even better...he's back to eating everything he can get his mouth around. Sigh. Evil puppy rides again (although he's still not as bad as he was).

How's Buddy doing? We're hoping all is well, and wondered if his treasure had arrived yet.

Take care!

Update:

We went back down to the vet yesterday afternoon. His digestive issue is doing much better, but his paws were suffering from massive cheat grass (foxtail)... it is really bad this year. He developed three big abscesses in his front paws overnight and had a lot between his toes/pads all over :(. The stuff is truly evil and impossible to get out... especially when your sheepie is sensitive about his paws to begin with... Buddy has a "don't touch" attitude lol.

He's had a really hard week... but is doing better now that all the cheat grass is all out of his paws. He is bummed that he can no longer go in the creek, but that is only until his paws heal.

Thanks for caring... I was too exhausted to post yesterday.

Cheers,

Alan
He's such a cutie pie glad to hear he is doing better . And hudson too.
Thank goodness. :phew: I kept checking for an update yesterday.
Poor boy... I hope he's feeling better soon so he can play in the creek.
I'm glad he is feeling better. You 2 have had a rough week!
Thanks for everyone's support and advice. Buddy is doing much better now. His paws are healing up nicely from the evil cheat grass... and he even got to go in the creek this morning! It is his favorite thing on our walks :D

You guys are the greatest...

Alan and Buddy
